Hey all,
We just worked on possibly the goofiest Star Wars thing since the Holiday Special (said with love, of course!) - Lando's Karaoke in the Cantina! Star Wars Cantina Karaoke w/ BILLY DEE WILLIAMS & PATTON OSWALT: Course of the Force - YouTube
And check out the behind the scenes video, which really shows off the aliens, set and lighting - Making of STAR WARS CANTINA KARAOKE w/ Billy Dee Williams & Patton Oswalt - YouTube
We put together 17 aliens (from head to toe), along with Dr. Evazan, the Tonikka sisters and 6 human costumes in about 5 weeks. The TSD team worked their tails off in both during the NY build and LA shoot.
In addition to Billy Dee, the video also features Patton Oswalt, Jason Schwartzman, Carrie Keegan, Chris Hardwick and even Chloe Dykstra, daughter of Star Wars FX pioneer John Dykstra…
Some of our Super Bowl Commercial aliens made a return, but we had plenty of new ones to create, including three band aliens and instruments, a completely custom Greedo, new wigs for the Tonikka sisters, and a new Nien Nunb mask and costume, which we used as both actor-worn wardrobe and a puppet. We also pulled and painted new castings of the Crocker, Advosze, Terminal man and others.
We cast a lot of friends and you'll spot the RPF's Art Andrews as Muftak, Prop Store's Brandon Alinger, TSD crew like Brian Lewis, Mike Morello, Patrick Louie, even FX master Tony Gardner and a lot of his team (many of whom played the aliens in the VW commercial too). We also tapped our friends Craig and Victoria with their Gamorrean Guard and Oola costumes and Lucasfilm sent two "tour ewoks" to fill out the crowd.
A real highlight for me was when Rick Baker stopped by with Dave and Lou Elsey. It was such a treat to share this with them (though, to be totally honest, I was definitely a little nervous to have Rick Baker studying our recreations of some of his old characters up close!)
The guys at Nerdist (who, to no one's surprise, are indeed geeks like us!) blew everyone away with their incredible set. For everyone that set foot inside that bar, it was hard not to feel like we were "playing Star Wars" in that universe. It was an amazing cast and crew full of fans embracing their inner child and enjoying this chance to be a part of such a unique experience. It was a long day, a ton of work and a shoot we won't soon forget!
We've posted a ton of behind the scenes pics on our Facebook page, with more coming so please follow us there! https://www.facebook.com/TomSpinaDesigns
Thanks for looking and hope you enjoy the videos!
Best,
Tom
