    May 13, 2013, 11:41 PM - Dredd Badge models WIP (for 3D printing) #1

Hey, this is my first run at the badge models. Using Google Sketchup so for right now the angling on the tail feathers and the wings are not quite right but I will keep working on it. They may have to be modified after printing.

Aparently I was more tired than I thought last night. I will have new versions up with angled feathers and wings later on today.

Looks good so far ... with the soften tool you can hide some of those lines that are created when you pull in an angle a surface.

I am using Sketchup for this model and I am not having any luck locating a soften tool. So I have removed the normal edges and added siluette edges. It looks a bit cleaner this way but there are still some imperfections (See the bottom of the middle tail feather)

If you're using Sketchup on a PC, right click on top of a line you wish to hide and a list of options will appear, the soften command should be one of those options... but what you did looks good also .

Thanks man! Looks much better with the edges softened. I also figured out that the distortion at the bottom was caused by an imperfection in the face causing holes(So glad I didnt print that). I corrected the issue and softened all unnecessary lines. Here is the new model.

I just ordered my 3D printer, Solidoodle 3rd Gen, so it should be here in 7-8 weeks. This badge will be my calibration print, so I am going to have a fair number rolling around. I will also be releasing the STL once I make sure everything prints properly. I am also going to be making a blank name copy with the letters separate so you can customize it.

Came out nice ... are the lines on the bottom "feathers" from the print?

According to the forum I cant offer to take payments until after I get the minimum amount of posts (25) and I have been active long enough. I am working on getting here and I will let you know as soon as I am able to. If you let me know what name you want on it I can see about working the file so you can see it in render before I get there.

The feathering is to match the slope I set into the bottom feathers.

I am going to post the STL file on here so that anyone with a printer can do it themselves.

    Excellent work.
I downloaded the file to have a look how easy it would be to alter the name. MMMM beyond my meager knowledge. How difficult would it be for you to alter the name to HERD, I have the fortune to use most of the letters from DREDD in my surname.
    Cheers

Erikv: It would not be too difficult to do. I am slowly making a library of characters to use. I have pricing for the prints available in my sale thread http://www.therpf.com/f13/3d-printed...es-kit-192229/ Just let me know and I will get things started!

Alright I now have ANDERSON style badges available. Next project will be DEATH style mod. That one will take a while since it will have to be done from scratch again.

    Here is the Anderson:

My Solidoodle 3 does great work. The prints are crisp and clean and I get a lot more control over it than many of the others out there. Some things you might want to know:

You will have to build an enclosure if you are using ABS, you will probably want to eventually setup an exhaust fan to help keep the temperature stable so you dont shred filament.

Acetone and a toothbrush are your friends, dose the bed with acetone every 3-5 prints and any time you touch it with your fingers, use the toothbrush to clean the feed gear if you see plastic shredding on it. (After the print you are working on is finished put some acetone on the toothbrush and clean the gear.)

Find a bit head CR-V3/32, this will allow you to adjust the height of your print bed, you will do this a fair amount.

Keep an eye on your print head fan. If you are shredding a lot of plastic then make sure it is running. If not then replace it, they are about $6-$9 a piece.

Get some Silicone Grease, you wont have to use it often but it is good to have it.

If your feed gets jammed then clean it out and heat your print head to 205 degrees and extrude a few mm to melt and push through the blockage.

Use Ponterface, not as nice GUI but much more effective and doesn't have 1/10th the issues of other applications.

Always print a skirt and raft, only need about 2mm on the skirt but it will make an incredible difference when getting it to stick and when getting it up.

And of course feel free to ask me if you run into any issues. I love mine and am looking at getting a second just to speed up my printing projects.

So, for anyone wondering, yes my junkyard thread was removed without warning and not replaced in the depreciated junkyard. The print run went very well even though I had a large number of people still waiting for their prints (I believe everyone that paid had their badges shipped) I do still have the files if anyone needs help or any information on the badges. If you received one and liked it then please post a pic here of your badge. I would love to see how some of you completed them.
