Hey Stormy!!!
I uploaded the file to shapeways and to print a 1/48 size chair, the cost is around $7, you could probably reduce this cost by slicing the model along the seat back and bottom (the fill is around 25%). I think I may try printing in different plastcis to see the detail vs cost. These can be printed for as little as $2.50

That sounds about right. I'm curious what your results are like!
I know build orientation has a huge impact on quality. And it all depends on process - so for $7 a pop it might be worth experimenting.
I have looked at a replacement quad cannon, measuring 3x8x3, and they cost from $26 to $65. So I am wondering if it may be cheaper to 3d print stuff and resin cast, especially if more than one person wants them
Nice on the quad cannon. Is that a file on Shapeways you found or somewhere else?
The trick part with SLA to casting is the file prep. Most of my files have voids and undercuts in them - i.e. they are already assembled. I'd need to dissect them a bit to get them casting ready. It's one of the cool things about printing is that you can make parts in ways that traditional molding don't allow.
This isn't an issue so much on the Captain's chair, but the NAV seat would need to be broken down into smaller bits to be cast.

The model is from another source, it isn't the best model, but I want to use it to weigh up costs of bigger things.I will probably make my own, or if I can get better ones use those.
I have done resin casting before, on a very small scale, and have stuff in my kit making box. You are right the nab chairs would be a pain, and probably not worth it. I would generally cast stuff that was easy and made sense.
I have ordered 3 copies of these in the standard finish, detail, and ultra detail at 1/48. We shall see how they come out!
That nav chair looks great!
What application could i use to convert igs files maruska
I use Alias and SolidWorks mostly. Sometimes Maya.
Rhino is a good alternative. Also, I believe there are engineering extensions for Modo and Cinema4D.
This is fantastic, I love following this thread.
Got a bit more work in on this tonight. Just about done. I have some file prep work to do before I publish it on GrabCAD, but all the big stuff is there. I'll do some nicer renderings in the next day or two as well.
Woot!
Woot, the seats have been shipped!
Awesome! Post pics when you get them!
I'm running tests on the side walls currently.
Maruska have you done the back panel in the cockpit yet? On the panels you are also showing grey buttons and , are those correct?
Also on chewies side the sliders, have you modelled those? I would like a copy to print those.
I haven't done the back wall yet, but will.
The most recent images I've posted aren't color accurate. I'll some renderings that are tho. Also, the 2D illustrations that did before I started the 3D are still probably the easiest to reference for color.
Lastly, sorry my site is down at the moment. Working on that too.
ta-da - my falcon site is back online. Yay!
Here is a link to the 2D illustrations of the sidewalls I did a while back. All the rocker switch colors and LED colors are as right as I could make them.
sidewall +1 | the falconer
I did end-up tweaking a few things once I got into 3D and was seeing opportunities to tighten things up and found new reference, but the Illustrator versions are pretty close to my final stuff.

Maruska can you tell me how big those domed lights are approximately on the main panel?
Sorry, my site is down again.
Having trouble with some rampant php files on my Wordpress installations. working on fixes though - which meant I spent my week-end be the IT guy and not working on getting the sidewalls CAD files rendered and posted to grabCAD. Ugh...
The lights are 1 ¾" in diameter.
There's a whole thread here: http://www.therpf.com/f79/pics-death...needed-182574/
This is the shapeways Fine Ultra Detail, I think with a coat of paint it would be great. Perfect for the really fine detail elements like the consoles, very smooth finish,
This is it on my desktop for size purposes, it is 1/48 scale. Cost in this plastic was $5.15
This is the Transparent detail, its perfectly good, very smooth. Cost $3.12
This is the solid white, it is actually decent detail wise, but I think there is also the white factor here. I will say there is a more grainy feel to it. It would be ok for those parts that are not centre stage, or high detail, for example if you are making big structures, with a coat of paint it would no doubt tidy up nice. Cost $1.70, so a third of the price.
This showing that my internals will probably be done mainly in the solid white, with consoles etc in the ultra detail.
Hi Cymonguk, the white is actually nylon and I heard it wouldn't take paint. Please let us know your results.
