Re: Rocketeer costume/scratch build rocket (Update 9/25)

Today I used a laser cutter I have access to, to make the vent for the circle, and for the boosters, although I havent installed those vents yet

and I finished my engines and test fitted them in the boosters.

I ordered some 4mm googly eyes to use as my rivets, then I just need to finish a few more details, then its off to paint! hopefully I will get it painted next friday if I keep this pace up.

Re: Rocketeer budget scratch build rocket *Update 9/28*

Nice job on the laser cut, and I like those silly putty eggs. I've got kinder eggs that I'm going to use and fill with foam. Should shape it nicely, but that silly putty looks bang on.

Are you attaching cables to your engines?

Re: Rocketeer budget scratch build rocket *Update 9/28*

Yup I'm attaching cables, just gotta paint the engines first. I got some wire from work that has like a braided shielding.

Re: Rocketeer budget scratch build rocket *Update 9/28*

looks awesome. just had a laser cuter laying around huh?...lol

I am part of a Maker group, and they have so many awesome tools that I get to use, im not trained on a lot of them yet, only the laser cutter so far, but hopefully soon I will be able to learn to use one of the two CNC routers they have there so I can make some truly epic/accurate stuff.

today I used some googly eyes as rivets, they are 6mm.

and I found a computer fan that is pretty close to the right size, I took the fan blade out and used my extra rub n buff I had from my helmet

Re: Rocketeer budget scratch build rocket *Update 10/2*

i just made a harness, using a 4$ backpack from walmart, cut the back off and glued it to the back panel which is attached to the pack with 4 screws(and drywall anchors in the crab float foam), once it is painted I will also put a strip of velcro to secure it even more.

Re: Rocketeer budget scratch build rocket *Update 10/2*

Today was a busy day getting it ready for paint.

I laser cut about 24 Fins for the nose, and cut a slot with an xacto knife and wedged them in

Then I cut the vents for the boosters

and cut a better bottom vent

Then My friend came by and gave me my helmet after he clearcoated it, it turned out a little too glossy, but it still looks pretty darn good. Then when he left he took the rocket pack with him to paint and clearcoat, so next update will be a full painted rocketpack!

Re: Rocketeer costume/ budget scratch-built rocketpack *Update 10/3*

So exciting!! Looking amazing!

I like how you did your top vent. All the details are really coming together.

Re: Rocketeer costume/ budget scratch-built rocketpack *Update 10/3*

I love the idea of googly eyes for rivets... even unpainted it looks like it is going to work brilliantly!

thanks! only downside to the googly eyes, is it sounds like im walking around with a baby rattle strapped to my back hah

Re: Rocketeer costume/ budget scratch-built rocketpack *Update 10/3*

Re: Top Vent

I guess people call it the 'radiator?' The center vent on the top of the pack between the rockets.

Re: Rocketeer costume/ budget scratch-built rocketpack *Update 10/3*

Since I havent got my rocketpack back from painting, I decided to start wiring up the lights for the engines and fan

Re: Rocketeer costume/ budget scratch-built rocketpack *Update 10/3*

I wish I knew more about wiring. I plan on putting in battery operated LEDs.

I've seen some 'foggers' that have to be plugged in, but are pretty cheap. Would those be a good solution for the smoke? Are there 'generators' that small that would be able to power a fogger?

no, fog machines get pretty warm, and battery powered fog machines are probably way too heavy and expensive for this application,
The LEDs I used, and from ebay, they are 4 12" strips, and they are 12v volt, so I will wire them up to 8 rechargeable AA batteries, and activate them using the Switch in the glove gauntlet.
its actually really simple to wire it up, if you want to know more lemme know and ill PM you a diagram on how to wire them up.

Re: Rocketeer costume/ budget scratch-built rocketpack *Update 10/3*

Small update,
My rocketpack should be back tomorrow from the auto body shop tomorrow

So in the meantime I'm working on my gauntlets, this was my first time ever using a sewing machine, and I'm not very good with it haha,
So this is how they turned out. Gotta still dye them and add the strap
