FemShep N7 Armor, Valkyrie Rifle, + Omniblade (Mass Effect 3)

Re: FemShep n7 Armor: SYNTHESIS (ME3)

I wasted about half of it I think. Learning is worth it though. I start any build knowing up to half the $ going into it could end up in the trash if I'm teaching myself something totally new. I try to think of it as the experience I'm paying for, not just a supply.

Emphasis mine because it needs to be said. I think I spent 4 times as much on my first sculpt (Asari ;) ) as I did on subsequent pieces. Now even without rookie mistakes it's an expensive process scratchbuilding but oh so satisfying :)

Awesome work :) Really nice and crisp, love how the armour is so thin- looks like it could be worked from sheets of metal. And all your in progress on the bench shots are really appreciated :) Nice to see the joy of the making XD

Also, I may not appreciate you art teachers method bus definitely the sentiment :) Industry folks know all to well you cannot obsess over everything. I had a skirt held together with tags from a shopping tag gun for Jack of All Trades as there was no time for a properly paid wardrobe member to repair it. Shh, I repaired the bodice eyelets several times for free ;)

Does this look like joy? Haha

Felt like playing dress up again today. Got the wig and upper sections on to see how they worked together. They seemed to be okay, but I think theres a lot of tweaking that needs to happen in the shoulder straps. And posing with that neck guard is going to be a challenge - I have to look up to have full range of motion with my chin... scaled that thing a little too large for my short neck. Worried about how a helmet would work with that issue but I'll figure it out later.

Wow, this looks wery awesome! I watching for your progress and hope I can use some advise that you gived all of us! Keep on it!

Re: FemShep n7 Armor: SYNTHESIS (ME3)

I'll post my disaster zone in my own thread ;) But yeah the mess is something else people don't think about ;) The amount of time spent cleaning and tidying.... and finding and losing...

Post away! I'm here more for conversation than having a one-sided blabfest about myself. I don't care if we get off topic. I'll be posting important topics on the first page of the build for people who don't want to read through all of it.

This goes for anyone else building ME stuff too. If you are painting something or building a suit I don't mind seeing evidence of other people's hard work.

Thanks everyone! And to the lurkers who are popping in, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Freya, your work has always inspired me. Keep it up!
I remember your WIP Zelda posts from back in the cosplay.com forums. Your work never ceases to convince me to try out new techniques.
I can't wait to totally steal some of your methods for my newest project :)

Re: FemShep n7 Armor: SYNTHESIS (ME3)

It looks awesome, I have to ask though How do you put it on? the collar looks like it would be difficult to put on

Re: FemShep n7 Armor: SYNTHESIS (ME3)

Hard to believe this didn't exist already - I had to make it myself.

Haha, thanks. I tend to hang out here more now. I still have two Zelda costumes on my Flickr that have not been 100% finished and taken out for photoshoots, but I swear by god that will happen once it gets warm out.

My neck is thin enough to fit through the front. Sometimes if I am being careless and putting it on fast one of my ears gets folded painfully, but I am too manly to cry about this.

The chest piece has a separating zipper installed that you can see sticking out in this picture. It's a temporary solution, because it looks especially dumb where it is. Nothing screams "costume" like a big giant zipper in the back (not insulting anyone who has this - it's a feature of all my Zelda gowns - I just try to hide zippers somewhere less obvious if my hair isn't going to cover them).

And to answer the full body shot question - I can't do it until all of the parts are put together and/or have straps installed. I am just in the middle of that process now.

I also found my belt pieces! While frantically searching through my car for something to scrape ice off my windshield, I saw these wedged somewhere stupid. They were already primed black and my interior is black, so if it weren't for this chance encounter I wouldn't have ever found them until deciding to vacuum/clean the interior, which I exclusively do in warm weather.

Essentially in that photo and on the mannequin, things are either duct taped in place or hanging on by themselves. Once I get a managble system of assembling the outfit, that is when I can do a full armor picture with me wearing it.

Re: FemShep n7 Armor: SYNTHESIS (ME3)

Really cool! I can't wait to see it all together.

I don't think you have to worry about creepers because probably 95% of the time on here guys really are more interested in the detail of the costume. :lol ;)

Re: FemShep n7 Armor: SYNTHESIS (ME3)

One time in art school I had a professor rip a figure drawing off my easel. He did it because he felt I was too "attached" to my work. And his point was, when you get that obsessed, you lose perspective, don't take risks, and generally limit yourself (though I would have been a lot more pissed if *I* had ripped it). While that was a REALLY good drawing and I still wish I had it to put up in my studio now, I noticed that I don't have that attachment to paintings/drawings anymore, but costuming brings that back out in me. I think it's the torture of trying things on, making sure they fit, and doing tiny adjustments, over and over and over.

Pardon me for sidetracking your thread, but that professor was/is a jerk. All well and good to encourage an artist to take risks, but he had no right to do that. You see what he did? Ruined your passion for drawing and painting. I wonder how many other amazingly talented people he's scarred.

All artists are different. My art school buddies always accused me of the same thing: "You take too much time. Obsess on details/correctness. Just *do* it!". Yeah, well, I wasn't quick like they were. Ironically, the biggest advocate of "go directly to finish, take risks" now runs a B&B; I'm still in the design field.
:)

I hope you become insanely rich and famous with your talents, and get the chance to pay back his insensitivity.

Sorry for the rant. Back to your amazing build.

Generally I think creepers in real life are much more of a hazard than internet ones.

I've lived in some charmingly sketchy places - but one of my favorite memories was walking through a ghetto on Halloween, wearing Twilight Princess Zelda and holding a basket of candy for the kids (someone threw wet toilet paper bombs at me, and missed).

But I wasn't implying anyone was a creeper for the record.

I had some crap teachers, but one or two great ones made it worthwhile. Forcing an opinion on someone is never okay, but if you went to art school also, you know that is pretty much all that happens - by definition of earning credit for "creativity." He didn't bother me that much though I was very happy just to be painting all day.

Please stick with organized charity events or visiting kids at orphanages and hospitals..... Or please get a Terminator sized escort. :cool

Sounds like someone was a bit high on power... Perhaps some 'creation from destruction' with a paycheck so they aren't too attached to their job.

What is creepy is how much I love seeing your armor on the manikin. Wasn't that a Kin Cattrall movie?

Most of my students lived within 3-4 blocks of me. They knew who I was. But I went with other costumed friends.

Not one of them could tell me what an "elf" or a "fairy" was either, which I found culturally bizarre.

This weekend I worked on the N7 rifle, and drilled a bunch of holes in it where the LEDs are going to go. I'm not going to post pictures of this until those holes have been filed to the correct shape, in case I should alarm the prop's original maker. It was terrifying and I went so slowly, I only got one segment completely open.

Managed to break off a drill bit in the upper barrel. Arg.
