Making a mould

What can I use to make a mould? I have read a lot about silicone but I have found it to be quite expensive, so I would like to know if there are any good alternatives?

What's it for?
How many copies do you wanna make?
How good does the detail need to be?
Is it a complex shape?

These questions and more need to be answered. Yes, Silicone is expensive but you get what you pay for (mostly).
