1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Pretty sure the pads were made out of fiberglass...maybe gluing a layer of blue insulation foam on top and shape it with a hot cutting wire, sand and coat it with a water based paint?
Apart from that, great work as always Sofa. :cool

Hey J,

Thanks. I have to be honest... I'm really getting frustrated. These 1 step forward 10 steps back weekends really take a lot out of me. Its been really difficult trying to climb back to the original starting point with the "hopes" of any forward progress.

That's my opinion as well. I had the pleasure of chatting with a guy who worked on the TFA sets and he told me all the pads were fiberglass. That leads me to believe the originals were as well. I think that the path forward.

YYEEESS!!! that's so exciting. What a long time in the making for this.

Hey SS,

Agreed! :)

Well that's just great! Now Sofa has to scrap the corridor and start over! ;)

Hey L,

As I explained in a earlier post, covering the pads in a leather-like upholstery material wont work and the plasti-dip wont have the same texture. I think the fiberglass approach is the way to go. I just have to get ONE good solid pad to start with. Disney (any movie studio) has the ability to assemble a team of professionals who know everything from 3D printing to welding to electrical to fiberglass. We're just a handful of knuckleheads trying to figure it out as we go!

The good news is all that we have learned can and will be applied to the next cockpit! No more surprises and guessing our way through the build. :)

Ok......thinking......Once you get your first 'perfect' pad, use it as a buck to vaccuform the rest! You could knock out the others in a couple hours max. Just throwing out simple options.

If you look closely at the pads you can see they were cut kida roughly around the edges. So how to attach? One piece of PVC and two end caps! One end cap gets flipped upside down and screwed into the wall, the other end cap gets screwed base down onto the underside of the pad shell. The you get a measurement on how long to cut the PVC, but make it about .25 short (so you dont bottom out) and glue the three pieces together with PVC cement.

Like this:

Fiberglass is fine but it will take you days and $$$ to make all the pads.

sofa. have you thought about using paper mashee (hope you call it same over there as here) for the pads, I've used it to create so many things including Boba Fett's helmet works easily yes takes time but dries rock solid easily painted can create curves etc also is very cheap.

for those not sure what I'm on about very simply torn up strips of newspaper dunked in a mixture of flour and water then simply stick it to whatever keep building up layers etc until happy, can add more if want after first lot dried.

Hi Gang,

Its that time again! Not much of a weekend update as we all know what weekend this was! :) WOW! The Last Jedi was so much fun! I'm so happy.

Anywho... I tried to salvage the corridor padding

Fun weekend! Can't believe how quickly the movie got here! :)

More to follow!

Those coils look sweeet! I'm not sure you need the upper LED's though. Seems to drown out the EL light. The other little PC boards look cool too.

I love your capstone coffee table. Looking at it installed, I don't think the trim piece needs to come down as much as the door frame seam needs a trim all the way around. If the door were framed, even with just another black piece, the distance between the door and the capstone trim would be lessened.

Gonna try not to make this a spoiler but seeing as how this thread contains a large majority of people that REALLY know the Falcon, I'll ask... Does the TLJ Falcon cockpit appear to be "dummied down" to anyone else? In the scene where Luke is alone in the cockpit reminiscing, they pan around and after a year or more following this thread, all I could think was "Wait, where's the rest of it???".

Hey L,

We're going to try another approach. We're making a new master pad. We create a silicone mold and then pour expandable high density foam (not the spray stuff I've been using) into the mold and then trim the excess. The best part is the pads will be actual foam and simply slip into position. We'll probably use some Velcro to keep them moving around.

Hey LB,

The Paper Mache approach is a great idea. The idea of having actual foam pads, as I explained above, is really exciting and the direction we're going to take. But who knows what will happen! ;)

Thank you, my friend! The white LEDs really do drown out the red el wire. Much more than I expected. We're going to add a dimmer to those particular LED strips to help make the red/coils pop. We're also going to add a blinking effect to one of the coils to give the appearance that its starting to fail.

The door frame needs to be mod'd in order to accept the door padding. With everything around the door frame being black its very deceiving to the eye. I've already redesigned the capstone trim piece by dropping the lower line about .5". It should help balance everything out.

Love the look of the EL wire, great weekend update.

Thank you, my friend! We're going to have a lot of fun with the cockpit entrance. We don't want to get too crazy with the LEDs but we want enough illumination to make it pop :)

Hey ST,

You are not the only one to think that. The cockpit from TLJ appears to have carried over from TFA. The reason, IMO, the cockpit looks so bare is that it appears a majority of the greeblies have been 3D printed and lack that real world look and feel we're so used to seeing from the OT. 3D printing is fun and is certainly an amazing technology but it takes away from what real world objects are. The natural grunge and used look the OT greeblies had a next to impossible to replicate.

However, the MF is 30 years older in TFA so its very safe to say that, if this was a real ship, over the years many of the parts have been replaced with newer and more efficient parts and components. Restoring an automobile requires us to make certain sacrifices if parts are no longer available. I can look past the 3D printed parts. I just wish they had done a bit more prep and weathering to help hide the 3D print textures.

Hope that made sense? :)

Wow, the glowing circuit boards look really nice

Thanks, OC!!! I love the natural red of the circuit board. :)

Great update Sofa...yes, those coils look great (with the lighting and everything). As for those corridor pads, well more trials in perspective; not an easy solution comes to mind.

Off-topic... So we finally got to see one of the Falcon's escape pods in TLJ. Did my eyes deceive me, or did the pod come out of an area that would directly interfere with where one of the back landing gears would be housed?

Nice weekend update for sure.

Thanks, L! Let's hope for more forward progress. All these "Steps Backward" are killing me! ;)

Thanks, J! The coils are finally coming to life. We have a few more surprises for coils so stay tuned! The pads... we never really know what we're getting into until we actually do it. We'll get there.

Hey T,

Finally! Your eyes did not deceive you. I've been chatting with Starkiller and he said, and I quote, "... the pods eject from the rear facets of the landing gear box... the other three facets of the landing gear structure are ports for the other crew (if we're assuming the ship is meant to have a crew of 4 from the cockpit)..."

I'm sure he's already modeling the pod and their locations on his 3D models! :)

I looked at the underside of a model and it looked like the gear would be too close, but if anyone can figure it out, Starkiller will.

Hi Gang,

A Merry Christmas to All! I hope everybody is having a wonderful holiday season and you have been able to share time with family, friends and loved ones! Can you believe 2017 is coming to a close?

Time for the end of the weekend update! This is the last post of 2017! Let's start with all the 3D printing. The nav chair head piece and greeblies are getting close!
