1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Hang in there Sofa: you're too far in to pull out (now, that doesn't sound good:facepalm) Lemme rephrase that one: I know that life has, sometimes, a tendency to throw us a curve ball.
But, the heck with it! You're stronger than that...hence that marvelous work you've done so far on that fantastic cockpit. Too cool to quit man, too cool to quit:cool

Great work as always Sofa, so sorry to hear about the troubles your having, my wife and I send you are thoughts and best wishes, take as much time as you need to recover as I had a very traumatic period in my life 8 years ago with my EX wife ( nasty piece of work ) see took me down to below zero ( financially, physically and emotionally) it took me a while to recover and with the help of my new partner I got through and it made me a stronger man.

Small steps, open arms and an open heart to receive all the help that was offered worked for me,
A little story from a turning point from my troubles

I had a little old lady I was doing some work for, give gave me some advise, she didn’t know what I was going through at the time, but I think she could tell I was down, I wouldn’t say they were wise words but more !! hitting the nail on the head, after a small conversation she just said ...
“ Sod them all, it’s your life, live it before it’s to late, problems don’t last you just have to work through them. but do it with confidence and a smile, look in the mirror wave goodbye at the old you and smile at the new you”. then she disappeared !!! No she didn’t :D She went back into her lounge and carried on knitting. Thanks to Mrs M. Holland

nice updates BTW keep it up ( in your own time ) are thoughts are with you x:love

Hey SC77,

I've learned not to have a target date for when its finished. I've set too many "Finish Dates" only to see them come and go and that can get really frustrating. The whole point of this build was/is to have fun and build something for everybody to enjoy both from the build side and display side. With that being said, I would like to have it finished before the end of the year. Life has its hurdles and I dont work on it full time so I really can't say. We've been out of the Convention/show circuit for far too long and we are planning to once again show the cockpit and the other associated props. There have been requests for 3 or 4 different shows but unfortunately we just weren't able to make it. However...

We have our first show coming up at the end of May in DC - more on that later as we get closer to the show date.
I do a lot of remodel work during my slow season in the HVAC industry, and NOTHING makes me want to just pack it up and go home like someone asking "How long do you think it will take?"

Now, I know as a customer they are just trying to get an idea of how long their house is going to be in disarray, and as a professional I never let on that it's like a kick in the nuts answering that question, but in my mind all I hear is "Well ****... Now I can go ahead an double my original time estimate" simply because they made me say it out loud. Happens every time.

Every.............single.............time.

Hang in there bro, things will turn around for you man. I think i could probably speak for everyone, but I am positive this community is always here to support you!

I drop in about once a month to check your progress, WOW. I get tingly inside when I see this!

Take your time and hopefully let it be a stress reducer and not a stress generator.

I saw your note on doing HVAC work. I used to be in HVAC for off road vehicles ( hint a big Green tractor company). Which raises the question, will this cockpit be air conditioned? ;)

This is what the image is supposed to look like :D:-

SoloShip.jpg

The extra set of seats/controls etc are an additional (dimensional) cutout section to go in front of the main cardboard cutout, looks weird in a flat image I'll grant you!

Hi Gang,

Time for an awesome update! At least I think it is... ;)

Saturday was a total bust a thunder storms rolled through the area and caused some power outages. But I doubled down on Sunday!

Work continues on the 1:4 scale cockpit. Lots of redesigning and recutting as I try to mirror the full scale version
IMG_20180415_143811_zpslftcwrnx.jpg

I then jumped over to this little project. I spent several hours cutting up 1/2" insulation foam board into these simple 10 x 15.25" shapes
IMG_20180414_105732_zpsdcmb4gaa.jpg

Glued several of them together
IMG_20180414_110003_zps6hntgxzc.jpg

Cut these smaller strips
IMG_20180415_143802_zpsdfczu9e5.jpg

IMG_20180414_110408_zpsp8tvqwej.jpg

Cut this round over template
IMG_20180415_151200_zps6lagmwip.jpg

Making sure the edges look good
IMG_20180415_151225_zpsz8vyvwo5.jpg

IMG_20180415_151235_zps5f1k49lj.jpg

Adhered everything together and hand sanded / rounded over the edges smooth
IMG_20180415_134645_zpsllr8boe0.jpg

Covered with Mod Podge to seal and harden the foam - we have a new test corridor pad!
IMG_20180415_143110_zpsmwuiyy2f.jpg

4 down
IMG_20180415_162638_zpsqn12lvr8.jpg

UGH - dang adhesive!
IMG_20180416_083422_zpsfoyrik5r.jpg

IMG_20180416_084708_zps644swuic.jpg

Looking good
IMG_20180416_084724_zpsensxlzzi.jpg

The plan is to cover the pads with the Mod Podge and Shop Towels (for texture)
IMG_20180416_091845_zpsgf7kdlnq.jpg

The towels are torn to remove any and all visible sharp clean lines
IMG_20180416_091851_zpsbgmtl1wi.jpg

Covered - you can already see the texture forming
IMG_20180416_091859_zpsfdy2klwg.jpg

Its tough to get the entire pad covered in one pass. Once the glue/sealer (Podge) dries you make a second pass to cover those areas missed
IMG_20180416_103639_zpsuhhe8ufr.jpg

IMG_20180416_103650_zps3lfz86tm.jpg

IMG_20180416_104357_zpsftkqa0u6.jpg

Tear up a small piece of towel
IMG_20180416_104416_zps1kawenhx.jpg

Load the area with adhesive and brush/tap into place
IMG_20180416_104517_zps93pnewfn.jpg

IMG_20180416_104522_zpskwwrq7al.jpg

IMG_20180416_104528_zpsdoljko53.jpg

IMG_20180416_104557_zpsh4bvtowc.jpg

Done - the torn edges simply blend in with the rest of the texture(s)
IMG_20180416_104638_zpserzyhh4l.jpg

Painted black before adding the familiar tan colors - save that for later!
IMG_20180416_152659_zpsg6ejflj0.jpg

Time to knock out these pads! :)
IMG_20180416_092117_zpscguf2fuc.jpg

Four layers per pad
IMG_20180416_103607_zpsto9knbsl.jpg

Adhered together
IMG_20180416_103617_zps0dqkqu4v.jpg

Cutting the edge pieces - 6 pieces per pad
IMG_20180416_115919_zpsh1tbbjvc.jpg

IMG_20180416_121839_zpsuqjljeke.jpg

Spray adhesive worked much better than the Elmers - and its was faster!
IMG_20180416_123949_zpsaumbgfl2.jpg

Once everything was in place it was time to route these hard edges!
IMG_20180416_143519_zpssj4hfjah.jpg

Instead of hand sanding, I broke out the router with a 1" round-over bit and... Well... it was a MESS!
IMG_20180416_143511_zpsjlwmcyew.jpg

Each pad routed very different from the other - that's a good thing. The holes add character
IMG_20180416_143526_zpstssbcmws.jpg

IMG_20180416_143541_zpsarqhfcwb.jpg

IMG_20180416_143548_zpsbkabxfut.jpg

I then spent an hour or so using the palm sander to smooth and take down then uneven foam edges
IMG_20180416_152148_zpsiwxrbqje.jpg

I wish I could easily hide all those layer lines - thus the shop towels
IMG_20180416_152156_zpsyqrknqrx.jpg

Still need to add the Podge and towels but the hard part is over!
IMG_20180416_152617_zpsnddhkhqv.jpg

That looks so cool! :)
IMG_20180416_152623_zpsfzes3p7e.jpg

Still need to sand and round over a few missed edges
IMG_20180416_152630_zpssemxniul.jpg

IMG_20180416_152638_zpsvdscm0wf.jpg

Naturally I have to space them out
IMG_20180416_152647_zpskndgzj4c.jpg

And this is where we are!

This was a great update. Really cool that you've found a method of making those pads that you're happy with. It's still very different than what I imagine, but so long as they look right, it'll work. And they already look great in this mid-process version. This just makes it all the more necessary for you to do more of the corridor!

It's good to see the pads. I'm thinking Chewie uses them like towels to wipe his wet fur on, explaining how they all turned from white to dirty yellowish. :)

Nice update indeed, can’t wait to see some colour on them, Also the 1/4 scale cockpit is looking mighty fine

Thanks so much, J! No intention of laying down. We're going to knock this out one way or another. :)

Hey D,

The more I look... the more I like the yellow. I'm not a big fan of the recessed panels but she is a GREAT image!

Hey B,

Thank you so VERY much for the very kind words, continued support and encouragement. I type those words often throughout this thread but I hope they never lose meaning to those I write them. We all go through life's lessons, jump life's hurdles and question life's reasons... the bottom line is must "...Sod them all, it’s your life, live it before it’s to late... do it with confidence and a smile..." Sometimes the simplest words hold the most meaning!

You guys and gals have been awesome throughout the years and I never want to come across as being unappreciative or take said support for granted. Say hello to the wife for me. I'm still here. And I'm gaining speed!

Thank you. :)

Nice... Not really digging that Gouldens Mustard color on the seats, but anyway...

Really? I like them! I'm going to create an alternate yellow seat pad seat to mix things up! ;)

Again, that’s so different from the Falcon that I’m still not convinced it is the Falcon.

I'm not convinced either. I'm thinking Han wins a YT, but its not the one he thinks. At least I hope Lando pulls the ol "switch-a-roo" on him!
