Boy if it where in size with the 5ft studio scale model I'd love one! My console is passible bUT nothing compared to an acurate laser cut beauth!

Hey F,

You're build looks awesome! How wide is the back wall - the center line above the shelf? This might be something explore...

Hi Gang!

Time for that "End of the Weekend Update"! Made some real forward progress on the 1/4 scale cockpit! ENJOY!

Worked on the nav computer by adding reflective tape to the interior

I designed and laser cut an interior shelf for the LED strips that go behind the lower instrument panel

Tough to see in place

IMG_20180922_124651_zpsevl1p4bs.jpg

I then laser cut a trim piece for the lower instrument panel

Filler

IMG_20180922_153533_zps88pymw5n.jpg

Laser cut a trim ring on the window frame
IMG_20180922_095754_zpsh34mbj1a.jpg

Perfect fit! Now the window is framed and stationary
IMG_20180922_095819_zpslxrrxxx7.jpg

IMG_20180922_100100_zpsc4jwsw6g.jpg

Time to get these edges started! I used masking tape and pressed to highlight the edges - then used an xacto knife to cut the unwanted material
IMG_20180922_112453_zpsxeyma6qh.jpg

After cutting the shape around the window I peeled the tape away revealing the basic shape of the window edge
IMG_20180922_112909_zpsbds8xtii.jpg

For $1.88 I picked a couple of large "For Sale" signs at the local Wally World! I then cut the basic shape
IMG_20180922_115657_zpsgpzou0f0.jpg

I adhered to the window using both E6000 and Super Glue
IMG_20180922_121115_zpsuonfz3r2.jpg

We then wait...
IMG_20180922_121121_zpsadonjxrq.jpg

Using a sharp blade I trimmed the edges
IMG_20180922_135223_zpskwutacvg.jpg

And of course... Filler

With more sanding and filler comes a nice smooth edge...
IMG_20180922_152153_zpswo2c1nrw.jpg

IMG_20180922_152158_zpsmransezv.jpg

I worked around the window in sections

Last section!
IMG_20180923_134510_zpsafmoagrq.jpg

I cut these two little tabs and adhered to the interior side of the opposing edges the final piece will rest
IMG_20180923_141949_zpssvzuziw7.jpg

I forgot to take a pic but you can see the tab on the interior side

Now comes the best part of the weekend! I created this arch with those odd looking notches
IMG_20180923_122015_zpssivn4ldh.jpg

Hey Now... we have the start of a canopy!
IMG_20180923_131910_zpsttccsush.jpg

This was really difficult to figure out all the different lengths, edges, etc
IMG_20180923_131915_zps27k3pa5x.jpg

IMG_20180923_131921_zpsrrdjttvq.jpg

I THINK I got the lengths correct ;)
IMG_20180923_131938_zpsytobvc69.jpg

So Cool!
IMG_20180923_131950_zpsik5m8d1t.jpg

I then started to box in the beams - no electronics so no worries
IMG_20180923_160658_zpsrzp8srof.jpg

IMG_20180923_160750_zpsygnmwo8g.jpg

I laser cut these pieces
IMG_20180923_152238_zpsrnt9pllc.jpg

Need to trim just a little bit

Interior beams boxed in and upper panel in place

Still more work to do but we're DEF making some progress

Man, the scale on the 1/6 model is really deceptive. In some of those pictures it looks like the full scale piece is back home. I can't wait to see what you do next with this

Hey Y,

This is the 1/4 scale version. But I agree! There are a few shots where it looks like the full scale. I'm really excited about the window and canopy although I have a feeling the canopy will have to be redesigned - I need to add a few vertical supports. I've got enough material I just hate taking all those steps backwards. But, I gotta do it right.

Any chance on doing a 1:12th (6 inch scale) kit? Also, do you have a parts list for the 1:1? Stumbled on this thread and your work is remarkable!

Hey SC,

Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words. No plans to do a 1/12th scale of as this writing but I would never say never. Due to the scale, I would have to rely heavily on decals to make up for the loss of detail.

1/12th would put the cockpit at approx 8-10" wide?

Hi Gang,

I've been too busy with life to post this weekeend's updates but here is sneak peek! ;)

Volvo Panels finally got their skins!
IMG_20180930_094549_zps2j4ftebn.jpg

I added another layer of interior skins to the window to even out and close up the gaps

Window temp in place

Ah, life! Can't live with it, can't live without it. Looking good though. Any progress being made on the full size cockpit?

Hey LtW,

MAN OH MAN! Work has been really beating me up this week! But it pays the bills so I can't complain too much. ;)

Not too much progress on the full scale as of right now. The guys are getting ready to mod the canopy so some pics should be coming soon

Good progress non-the-less Sofa...btw, I've sent you a PM;)

Thanks, J! PM'd

A 1/6 kit would be SWEET!!! How much would she cost?

Hey B,

Send me a PM

Such a wonderful project! It is amazing to see the work you have in this

Thanks so much, G! It's been a LOT of fun working on a scaled down version of the cockpit. Fortunately, I already have the files created for the full scale build so it's only been a matter of scaling those files down. :)

I think the 1/12 would come to somewhere around 11” diameter.

Hey SC,

Let me do some playing around and see how the console / cockpit would go together. At that scale, I think MDF would be out and I would only use acrylic?

Sofaking01

The diameter for the 1:12 scale would be about 9 inches. So you may want to scale even further down. Working on the 3D model of the pilot clutch tonight. Send you pics once it’s done.
