1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Excellent updates as always. Loving this thread. Been a few times now I've had to do a double take to ascertain if it was your Falcon or a shot from the movies.

The laser cutter. Whenever I had issues with the cutting, first things I'd always check; how clean the base grid work is, reflections from it could also cause small glitches. Does the one you use have a honeycomb grid or inverted 90º right angle base? Laser focus alignment was always a big cause of cutting / etching issues too. Finally, if those two checked out, it was usually time to clean the mirrors reflecting the beam.

I'm assuming the cutting power / speed is the usual values you've always used? And it's the same material? (I've seen the post so pretty sure it is).

Keep up the great work and the updates. They make my day.

Hi Gang,

An early morning update!

Hi R,

Thanks so much! :)

The laser cutter: We def have the honeycomb grid. Many of the "fins" are bent out of shape and / or are exposed metal. I'm wondering is the grid needs to be repainted? I'll def look into cleaning the mirrors. We have a few resident experts on-hand at the Makers . I'll see if they can't perform some maintenance. I think she needs it.

Yes, the settings are always the same, but I do think there is a glitch in the S/W. We're going to reinstall to shake out some of the bugs. For example, we used to be able to set the "Zero / Home" position wherever we wanted but that suddenly changed. We don't know if its a glitch or someone accidentally changed the settings. We can't find it anywhere...

Thanks again!

Excellent (as always)

Thank you, my friend! :)

Another great update :)

I always set up a new layer too with just the bounding box the size of the material in the cutter and set the laser / etch ticks to off. That way, when the cut is downloaded, and the test button is hit, it sends the cutting head around the area of the box.

I'm not sure re-installing the software will change the home position, that's usually set (to the top right) by the object loaded into the machines memory (hence why I use a bounding box). We both have the same software FYI (I could tell by the screenshots you've shown). I found the design software limited and use Illustrator to do the designing, export as a DXF and then an import into the cutting software, a lot more efficient. The scaling issue then becomes a non-issue as the bounding box is a known size, and then all the elements in the cutting software can be scaled and dialled into the software directly by entering the size of the bounding box.

Have you tried turning the honeycomb upside down?

The cutter is pretty dumb (or the one I use is) and most of the settings are controlled through the software. We never change the laser power or speed on the machine, always in the software.

As a last resort, you can always do a point test to see how the collimation of the beam is. I'll offer any help I can to solve problems.

Hope that helps and keep up the fantastic work.

I wonder if Greg has a tremendous craving for Peanut Brittle again after discombobulating the thingamabob with the doohickey! :) Warned ya about ripping a hole in the space time continuum! LOL

Set phasers (lasers) to stun (sorry for mixing genres, I love both) :cool

The last time he messed with the laser bits he ripped a hole in the space time continuum and ended up having a craving for peanut brittle! I think he used the doohickey wrench instead of the thingamajig driver and over tightened the whatchamacallit platform!

I know; I've read all 281 pages… Loved them all…

You guys got it all wrong... it has nothing to do with that doohickey whatchamacallit or that thingamabob... everything is possible because of my lucky astrology mood watch!

Geez

Another early morning update!

There was a break in the rain/drizzle and I was able to get a few coats of black paint onto the instrument panel - pin stripes VERY soon!

I then added some paint to the "mini-cam" greeblie

The "mini-cam" sits on the rear armrest along with these two odd greeblies - which I laser cut a mounting base for

20151103_192747_zpsixxooiyp.jpg

I'm going to laser cut a new piece that also holds the "mini-cam" in place

There is also a small knob located at the top
20151103_193023_zpstp40exci.jpg

Added filler to this and sanded
20151103_192717_zpskhnypqsu.jpg

Sanded smooth and cleaned it off to add primer
20151104_035732_zpsoddytosw.jpg

And then this happened... I'm scraping it and making a new one
20151104_035942_zpsyzjtml0w.jpg

I adhered the top. filled and added primer - waiting to sand smooth
20151103_165105_zps7zvwyjrn.jpg

I was sanding this smooth and then CRACK (2nd one to snap in two)... Had to fix
20151103_164347_zpsmgs4iddv.jpg

Once fixed I added primer and sanded smooth (again) then started putting everything back together

I'm sure most, if not all of you, know what this is...

COOL!

OK... Once the fun was over I jumped back to these and sanded and added paint - let's hope for no more breakage!

More to Follow!

Love how the Canister lights up. Looks spot on. Great work SofaKing01. :thumbsup I was wondering how you were going to secure the rear console greeblies. :)
