decided i wasnt willing to spend serious money on a replica costume and make my own. build cost to make the costume will be 60 uk pounds (resin, matting and paper)

the victim - aliens colonial marine.

so i made a couple of bit to see how it would work - 8 hours alone folding and cutting and glueing the shoulder sections, then the chestplate i started on, and the resin coating, fibreglass matting of the reverse sides of the shoulder parts........so im approx 14hrs in and as it took shape so well i decided i will continue.

already i can see how well its going and it fits my build like a glove

shoulder section matted and resined - needs trim and sanding

and a mock up with its current progress - it was this point i decided i will continue, hard to believe it was just 110gsm paper

Great start. May I suggest you put the pep you are creating in the title of the thread. May help to attract more viewers.

Looks really good where you get the pep files? I have a suit of Spat's coming in a few months, but It would be neat to build one and have 2 ;)

i got it from a guy that was building one, but found it also via google, i did think about a spat one - but i didnt fancy postage and import duty to get to the uk - would hike the price up too much for me, another forum member started work on his, so i decided for the cost involved to give it a go and see - as soon as i made the shoulder i decided it was going very well

The sharpness of it is going to be a lot better than what Spat can do, probably, just because the nature of how his armor is made, but I do like the durability of HIPS & ABS over resin/fiberglass.

mine wont be worn, altho i will fit it so its suitable for my frame it will essentially be on a dummy its whole life - who knows on a fancy dress time i could use it - we will see - at the moment im having a blast making it

little update after 18 hours spent so far on this project:
paper work on the chest piece was finished:

chest plate was then resined both sides, and fibre glass matted....... harder than a porn star now

broke out the dremel after 12 hours and decided to neaten off the edges a little, add some curved edges to make it that little nicer, nice to have a constant 3mm lip on the shoulder now .......so chest and right shoulder after

was curious to see how much better it went togeather at this point, so with all the raised areas taken down i got a better idea of how it will sit, it was after this i placed it on my body and guess what - fits like a glove - very happy now :)

will need to inject some resin into the corners of the chest plate so i can dremel the edge a bit more, after this these items will be awaiting sanding. next is the rear back armour, front ab and cod piece to make

This is really fun to see as I am just finishing up my Colonial Marine for Comic con. Mine is fiberglass cast off Dietrich armor. This is really looking great! I do love that you will have the sharpness that mine was lacking till we spent a lot of time sharpening up all of the details to make them stand out. Looking forward to seeing this finished. Keep up the great work!

think it was 2 hrs, as i had borne ultimatum on and had made the part by the time the movie finished - exaggerations eh lol, have to say if an alien goes for my plums there isnt much there to protect them, john holmes is gonna have major probs

built up the rear chest plate - a long total of 6 hours, gave it a resin coat to give it structure then a thin fibreglass matting inside - the spray cans used to hold the plate in position so it matches the sides of the front piece.

a very difficult bit to get right due to the structure when resin/matting as its curved and folded so it wants to move 4 ways unless propped up - using the beams in the pep kit wasnt working (was fine for the initial resin coat but not when i reversed the item for matting, i had to matt it then set it in the right positions it so itll harden to the required shape) - i also wanted to keep the bend in the back - ive managed it all so happy

Hi everyone, I would be the original maker of the files for the Colonial Marine I'm also known as Nintendude in several places, Hirgon was the unfolder of the files but I provided the 3D Model parts for him to do the unfolding. You can easily find the CM files on The Hunters Lair in the Non-Predator Costuming discussion. This build is looking amazing. One tip if I might add if you see a cut line where you have one number on one side of the line and a matching number on the other side of the line but no fold tab showing, you do not need to cut that line, think of it like the tab is already glued in that spot so no cutting required. The hardest part for you to do in the future is going to be the helmet. It's not because of how it was unfolded it's because of the shape, it has a lot of curvature so that makes for a pain to unfold and build with pepakura.

the helmet im having made with cast parts so luckily i dont have to pep that one - i understand the tab line now - theres been a few to which miffed me, but no biggie - as its going to be sanded, filled and resanded to get it all right - annoyingly i had a split on the back plate right on the edge - but itll sand and fill no problem.

ps - left and right arms/leg gave me an issue tho - i made the right side but had to actually fold it the opposite way to build the right section - another maker also mentioned a similar prob on the leg armour - almost as if it was one leg and one arm on the left side which was correct, but not actually reversed for the other side - therefore to build a right arm and leg means folding the opposite way if thats understandable
