Not So Accurate Farnsworth

After reading the Farnsworth threads, I decided that I wanted one.

I didn't like the look of the blacked-out viewscreen, and I don't have the
expertise to wire up a backlight for it like one of the Farnsworths built by
one of the members here.

I also don't have any metal working tools or machines. Mostly I work with
plastics and--when my hands aren't working right--I used paper and cardboard and then laminate and paint so it looks like metal.

So: using the list, I assembled some parts.

Not shown in the phot are a bunch of other buttons, knobs, and
switchcovers that I have collected over the years.

I cut a faceplate from carboard and painted it with a textured metal
paint. The Wheatley fly case was painted Fusion Expresso Brown. I
then glued a print of a Dr. Who/Stargate t-shirt image where the
viewfinder would be and, after assembly, used an eighth inch thick
"o" ring as a finishing ring where the opening of the faceplate met
the curve of the magnifying glass lens.

The only thing I have left to do it put in the red "power" light lens
(which will go in the lower right corner).

I know the placement of the switches and the color of the faceplate
aren't right, but brass/gold paint never, and I mean never, looks like
metal. And, since the switches were different, I messed around and
used a little artistic license to get them to look good (to my eyes).

Not bad looking, though your new red lense is in the the wrong spot, it needs to switch with the knob over top of it. Nice work though :thumbsup

Yeah, I know. I put it there because that other arrow-type switch was so
big. And it looked funny sitting next to the other red pointer switch.

I've never been a stickler for accuracy.

If the position of the screen was moved down a notch or two and the case was the right size...

...do you think it would be possible to slip an iPhone in the back and have the iPhone display show through??

No idea. But the inside dimensions of the Wheatley case I used
came to a little less than 4 x 6 inches.

Wouldn't the Iphone's fullcase screen size put a damper on that idea?

I like your ingenuity. I've had a Farnsworth on my list for years, and have since been accumulating parts, but am such a stickler for accuracy that I haven't made one yet. So I admire your ability to actually get one built. And to have one built the way *you* want to build it just makes it that much more personal. You can tell this one's built out of love for the show and the process. I applaud you, sir.
