Re #1) Screen used R2's are no longer used for public appearances even at 'The Ranch'.
Fan built R2's have been used for the Today Show Halloween 2009, Wall Street Bell ringing ceremony, the Adidas sneaker NYC release promo with Snoop Dogg (not the Daft Punk commesrcial) a recent McDonald's TV commercial, and Currys & PC World Megastore TV ads in England (next to Anthony Daniel's in the 3PO suit so I'm told). Not to mention a few Hollywood red carpet events.
