Tutorial: BTTF Doc's Red Wind-Up car *lots of Pics*

Do you guys also believe the Lightning Rod would have been made from the same material as the Key?
I plan to make mine from Welsding rod as well, would there be interest for a combo pack of the key and the rod?

I did a quick mock-up with the key and Lightning rod
The pencil is hot-glued on at this point and the key is inserted into a hole I drilled.
I will discuss how all of this should actually be installed later, but first I need to know if it's ok.
BTW- I believe the Lightning Rod to be silver, not copper like I have here. i will make silver ones tomorrow at work.
Please tell me what you guys think;

after looking at the angle of the Lightning rid, it's not steep enough. I'll adjust over the weekend. One of the reasons that I hot glued it for now

so...
I was looking at screen caps and also the reference pics we have with the lightning rod.
I think i see sometghing Tell me if you think I'm crazy or not.

I think there is a silver wire wrapping around the rod and ending in a loop on to of the hook.
There is definitely a loop on top of the hook, but I don't know how it's attached.
Does anyone else see the small glints of light reflecting off of the rod?

Ugh.
I've been watching and rewatching the DVD.
I don't know about my wire idea now.
anyone have this on Blu-ray and could look?

Anyway, I've been working on the cover for the explosives today.
I started by making a paper template to mock it up.
Remove the chassis and interior, then trace around the opening to get the approximate size and shape. Cut the shape out and test fit
bttfwindup133.jpg

Once you have the shape you like, transfer over to ABS and cut out 2 with your X-acto knife
bttfwindup135.jpg

Shape the corners with an emery board or sandpaper
bttfwindup136.jpg

until you have these
bttfwindup137.jpg

Take one and draw a pattern similar to this on it
bttfwindup140.jpg

Then grind out the middle with your Dremel equipped with a sanding drum to get this
bttfwindup141.jpg

Clean up the edges with sandpaper .
Round all of the edges except the for the ends.
Place this piece on top of the other one
bttfwindup142.jpg

You'll need to cut the ends at roughly a 45 degree angle and cut a straight piece to fill in the gap
bttfwindup145.jpg

Sand the straight piece edges so they are also rounded.
Cut the straight piece at the same angle to make it fit the curved piece.
Glue the 3 pieces together.
bttfwindup146.jpg

Sand all of the edges so it looks like 1 piece.
DO NOT Fill the gaps on the 45 Degree angles
bttfwindup150.jpg

Primer and paint the same white (even though it's not the same color on the real car), let dry and install.

Not sure if we should glue it in, or use velcro, or just leave it loose.

Stay Tuned, We'll revisit the Lightning Rod and Key next.

I've been looking at the rod and loop too... what if it isn't a rod, but a thin tube with the silver wire running in the middle? Just a thought I was going to try when I get my car.

There is something fine there, causing a fuzziness on the rod. A guitar string?

And you need the black collars on the key and rod.

Coming along great man I love the white cover you got going on :cool I would def be interested in a kit with all the pieces if you decide to offer :love

If i only had a laser-cutter, I'd do a run of those for ya guys.
or maybe someone wants to drop mine in silicone
how about we do that at the SoCal Prop Party?
That way we can show how it's done and make some parts for people at the same time.

If that wire was actually live then the black collars would have to be an insulator. The uneven top makes me think it is rubber hose. Teensy weensy rubber hose.
