Nerf Gun Props? YES!

Here's a couple of Elements and a High Tide done up as the Unkempt Harold from Borderlands 2.

So lots of people do this.... none nearly as well and as often as Johnson Arms, however...

But having been inspired by this, i decided to take a crack at making a couple of weapons using a Nerf Stampede rifle and a Nerf N-Strike Scout Pistol. I decided to give them a Mass Effect theme (inspired by Johnson Arms' work).

Since there really is nothing to build or mofidy on these two, apart from filling in and sanding screwholes, it's really all about the paintwork... which is quite fun to do and it's amazing how convincing a look can be achieved with just some paint and imagination.

I did also cock the slide back slightly on the pistol to give it a neater profile, and glued it that way. The silver bits on both weapons as well as the metal weathering were done with Silver leafing. The rest is just spray paint and imagination. :-D

Thanks VERY MUCH to Johnson Arms for inspiring me! I've found a new hobby pursuit thanks to you!

Nice work, you're not the only one Johnson Arms has inspired.

So I've been looking on this forum for a long time I thought that would get into gear and make my own prop. Thought I would start easy and convert a nerf gun. Inspiration struck the other month while watching district 9. So after a few weeks of tinkering and stuff I finished. Want to make sure that this project got finished and was not just some thing which I never really sorted.
Pretty pleased with the out come, the weathering I really liked and I feel it gave it the look of being lost in the district for years until mnu found it. Put some work in progress shots up as well to show you guys how it came together.

Enjoy

This has got to be the most inspired Maverick mod on this thread. Brilliant! :thumbsup

This is a Nerf-a-like I've had sitting on the bench for a while. I tried several paintjobs; but wasn't happy with the results so decided to sand it down and start again. Somewhere along the way, with the yellow plastic exposed I noticed that it looked a bit like Bumblebee's arm cannon from Transformers. So I'm proud to present.........

Badsprout's Bumblebee Blaster.

Hey everyone, I'd found this forum a week ago and have spent hours learning from all of you and your incredible work, so to you, my thanks. =] Must say that this forum had gotten me started on a Borderlands styled Hammershot, of which pictures will be up soon. This is the first gun I've modded, its technically not a functional nerf gun since it shoots airsoft bb's now, but here it is. Porters X2 Ray Gun, inspired by Call of Duty Zombies.

Hi Sar94 and welcome to the RPF. That's a pretty fine first attempt, if I may say so. Did you start with a base gun or build it from scratch? I really like the enamelled metal look. Looking forward to see what you come up with next.

Cheers, Badsprout

Thanks! =] In a way, both; the body is a pistol that was with a Nerf target set from the early 2000's, not sure of the name, I replaced the internals with a cloud styled airsoft rig and the barrel/magazine blue bit is a lightsaber blade. Everything else that makes up the shape was conjured from spare parts and what some might call junk.

Filmed a firing test and overview if you'd like to see it in action. AIRSOFT PORTER'S X2 RAY GUN - YouTube

Hey everyone,

My name's Brian and I fell in love with this thread, so much talent out there.
I'd like to attempt to customize a nerf gun for an upcoming project (something I've not attempted yet) but I need to do more modding than just a paint job. I may need to change or add to the gun's shape and I'm wondering the best way to accomplish this, would it be with some type of foam or some sort of putty? There seems to be plenty of fantastic examples of people's work but not much for what supplies to use, what works and doesn't etc.
So I'm just hoping someone can point me in the direction of some educational resources to just get started with so I can start building and experimenting.

Welcome to the RPF Rockmonix :)

I tend to use materials that are similar where I can, or use plastics like sinatra (foam board), or styrene which are good too, but if it's practical, looks good and you can get it to stay on securly, almost anything goes :)

some things "I" have noted people use/used in the past:

1.) other nerf guns/nerf gun parts
2.) hobby materials (styrene/sintra...etc)
3.) scuplt epoxy/clay
4.) pvc tubing
5.) wooden dowels
6.) misc. braided tubes/hoses
7.) glass beakers/test tubes..etc

Depending on the look or specific style of course..

for myself.. its best to have an 'end goal' in mind.. and work toward it

tackling each step one at a time.. working through it.

not sure where you live.. but maybe your local hobby store has some materials to get started with.. (I know mine did!, and I had no clue until I went specifically looking for it) or a science/surplus store to pick up odds-n-ends.. glass tubes (steam punk'esque) or hosing/tubing, motors if you want your projects to move..etc.

good luck!

Excellent, thanks for the tips guys! I picked up a Nerf Stryfe last night to experiment with. I'm going for a Judge Dredd Lawgiver style of design. Obviously not screen accurate but I'll try and get as close as I can. Hopefully I can post some pics and get some feedback as I progress.

I have spent 2 days reading this thread so far and I am a little over half way though!

some great work and pictures here guys and fantastic tips, thanks to all of you.

I painted a Vulcan about a year ago and I am currently painting a Vigilon for a friend.
I have a small box of squirt guns I have base coated and picked up 10 foam dart guns yesterday at goodwill so I have lots of work ahead of me, lol
