Hi everyone, it's been awhile since I've been online (about 4 years actually) but I finally finished my build of the Gauss Rifle from Fallout 3.

Bravo man! Excellent design work. Looks bulky to carry though, did you manage to keep weight of the prop down?

I'll be showing it in the WIP pics that I post this weekend, but long story short; I skim-coated my molds with a roto-casting resin and then reinforced it with Smooth On's FreeForm Air epoxy clay to provide a stable bulk that I could drill into while still being extremely light weight.

Oh really interesting method. Sorta like glass fibre reinforcing.

Very cool build, not my favourite weapon from that game but definitely a fantastic looking piece.

Yes, I use fiber for reinforcing things like the casts of my Brotherhood of Steel helmet but the receiver of the rifle needed to have a lot of rigid body so I could drill into it and anchor parts entirely from the outside. Rigid foams didn't seem strong enough and a solid resin cast would have been impossibly expensive and heavy.
