Holy Grail "The cup of a carpenter"

Fly4v when I turned the base of Mr Fusion, also didn't have a lathe (well I had access to one, just didn't want to pay to use it) so I ran a bolt through the middle and stuck the thing in my press drill and use files what not to make it smooth and round. Not exactly a safe practice, but it worked.

The drill press is a good idea. The press I have access to doesn't turn very fast. I put a 3/8 dowel in the base so I can turn the bottom over a belt sander and not risk my fingers.

One of the circles cracked when I took a chisel to the center. So I cut then all open with a band saw and then glued them all together. The cuts and grain is opposing each other.
I plan to shape the cup in two parts and fit the two together.
If I can not make it perfectly round my excuse will be because it was made in the first century.

Used the dowel rod and sander method as originally planned for the base....

But used Cavx's idea of putting a bolt thru the center to shape the bowl since there wasn't a way to conveniently shape the hollow center.

Sadly, the glue is stronger ... more durable ... than the white pine so each joint became a ridge.

Also, the cup is not perfectly round but oval. What do you expect for something from the 1st Century.

The plan is to prime and sand until at least the vertical glue joints disappear.

The sad part is found a can of Krylon Ruddy Red that dries in 10 minutes. Had enough for one coat and can't find another can in any of the local stories. With what I found, now have to wait 24 hours between coats.

But is it dishwasher-safe?

It will be (Future Floor Polish and Acrylic Paint) wash-safe. Hate to see what the dishwasher would do to it.

I bought a lacquer based varnish that is a "Metal Leaf Spray Sealer" and it was a waste of $8. Good thing I tested it. The Sealer caused the leaf to lose its reflective quality... looks like gold paint now. Just glad I had a bottle of future floor polish.
