Cloth Cowl Ear Bump Outs

I am looking to make a form fitting fabric cowl (a la Cyclops, Gambit, Booster Gold) but I am stumped at what the best way to have the material not be crushing my ears. Would it be a good idea to essentially cut an outline of the back of the ear and sew a strip of fabric to pop it out?

I'd probably just slip a piece of foam under there to make it stand out a bit more and cushion things a bit. Hearing might be a problem though

A ring, cut around the ear, of beveled slightly kind of like wrestling headgear, of foam should work just fine. Im thinking maybe glue it into the cowl so it stay put better.

So far this is the best option. I will test this option.
