I think the thing that has been bothering me is that the switch in either position would be at a slight angle, but I'm not seeing that. It looks perpendicular.

you have a good point - it IS perpendicular, ad I can almost see the nut outside the body at it's base.
A three way switch would be straight but that sounds utterly too big
maybe it is a pot, with a cone shaped plastic handle?

I will say, alec guinness had to hold the emitter and use his fingers to slow down the rotation so the blades wouldn't splinter! if they had a dial, you'd think theyd just turn it down
It depends on the orientation of the switch, if it's mounted so it toggles side to side rather than up the length of the body, we probably wouldn't be able to notice the angle in the picture we've got. Unless there's more reference somewhere, I have a few other pics of this saber, but none that show the switch.

Good points guys.
Here is all of my reference photos besides the ones already posted. None are going to help with this issue. I was collecting them so I could figure out the paint color scheme. Does anyone else have any good ones?

Is the emitter & the windvain painted the same color? In some photos it looks black, but in others it looks lighter.

I can dig for where the discussion was later, but the more recent paint theories for this saber were (if my memory serves) basically a dark grey for the emitter and a brass-like color for the wind vane. That would jive with trying to emulate the colors on the hero, which they definitely tried to do with painting the booster and grenade sections black. I think I remember that there was some confusion about the color of the face of the emitter, but the sides look like a dark grey, possibly black with lights on it sort of color.

Probably painted with Floquil paints. I have a few of the new Archive X paints for painting the Falcon, most of the colors are the same for other models, and possible the same for painting and weathering hand props.

I'm more convinced now that it's a toggle switch. From a distance (the photo with most of Alec in it) it looks like it could be one of these types of switches ...
But, up close... the shape is wrong.
So they coulda used something like this...
These are old HAM radio switches out of old aircraft radios.
Or they coulda just gone down to their local Radio Shack & got a new - working - switch for cheap... cheaper than a Les Paul anyway (even from a Pawn Shop).

JoeG you got me thinking. Yes, they dismantled entire jet aircraft (including the engines), BUT they bought them as scrap metal for pennies on the dollar... or (whatever the Engilsh use for pennies) on the £.

I only figured guitar switch because my friend has a bunch of guitars, they all have these silicone caps on them, and we have heard and seen record player parts used on other Props
Radio switch is a great idea! Could even be a simple switch from a air plane dash, that would also explain the silicone cap on it. Red being some kind of color code

Switches like the Les Paul have have a threaded base and a hard plastic colored tip that threads onto it. So the construction would fit pretty well with some of what's been discussed, I think it's actually a pretty good fit overall aside from the fact that it's three position instead of two. But that wouldn't disqualify it either.
That’s really good info, even though it’s a 3 way switch, they still could have used it to work with the motor. They would just have a dead position
How big is the threaded section on a Les paul switch? My friend is moving and I’ll be with him Saturday, see if I can get him to unbox on and take some measurements

A regular guitar 3 way is too big. Here's the switch on my Casino, the exact same type used on all Gibson-type guitars (Les Pauls, SGs, 335s, etc.). The mounting post is nearly 1/2" wide, plus then the retaining nut. If the saber used a toggle, I'm thinking disassembled surplus military equipment.

Back on the subject of paint...the v3 shared stunt was painted gray/bronze/black as previously discussed but thought that the v2 shared stunt was painted all black except the emitter and pommel (which were left bare)?

The v3 paint job you are referring to, do you mean that is paint job that’s on it today?
Because while Luke is dueling Vader (in rotj) you can see it’s in petty bad shape, and the booster still has black paint on it
Sometime most likely when it was chosen to go into space, lucasfilm redressed it, covered it in tape, and repainted it, so it looked better in the public’s eye with all its attention traveling on the space shuttle
To me, they did a horrible job repainting it to look like the v1 hero... I would have left it in its beat’n state...

I got my toggle switch yesterday.
This one.
It was ordered more as a test. But, I can ALMOST screw it into the existing hole on my v2! I wasn't able to try for very long, as I had to get on the road for today. So when I get home, I'll give it more of a try, to see if it actually threads in.

Lol yes Space Shuttle repaint was horrible...they should have called spirit of obi1... his v3 repro is amazing.
Anyway what I was more getting at was the Obi v2 stunt paint in ANH. From the pic I posted above it appears to be all black and NOT with gray emitter and bronze neck. A lot of info I’ve seen tracks to this all black paint for v2 but was wondering if it was ever confirmed?
