Happy Monday everyone! I'm late posting this here, but it's been a simple enough build this far that it's easy to catch up on.
This is the Vicious Sickle from the latest Legend of Zelda game - Breath of the Wild. It's hardly the best or longest-lasting weapon in the game, but I found it to be rather visually dynamic. Plus, it's just barely different enough from my usual LoZ sword builds that I thought it would be rather refreshing to build. I apologize for the odd square format on all these photos - I'm a big Instagram user, and so all these photos were backsaved from my IG page.
If I scaled my build such that my body was Link's body, the sickle would end up being far too large. So I scaled it to all my other Zelda swords based on hilt size. It's still a very appropriate size, just a wee bit more realistic. It started off as a few sheets of MDF glued around a curved steel rod. At the time, I wasn't sure if I was going to mold it or not. So in the event it was NOT molded, I wanted there to be a little extra reinforcement inside.
I was also under pressure to work quickly, as I'm hoping to have the full build done by DragonCon. So I made some 3D models of the hilt hardware and 3D printed them while I worked on beveling the blade. One of the photos below shows a PVC pipe used as the grip - this was a stand-in for a later 3D print. The Sheikah Eye detailing was added in the from of extremely thin styrene - .02 I think - cut by hand with an X-Acto blade after patterning it out.
The 3D printed grip hardware:
By this time I decided to mold it, so I worked toward prepping it for rubber. As of this post, everything has been molded with the exception of the second half of the pommel mold. I've run out of rubber and need to make a supply run. For casting, I am going to try casting it like I've done my Master Sword in the past - A thick EpoxAcoat Gray shell filled with Smooth Cast 300.
