Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

I'd say the staff looks to be almost a foot longer than she is tall, but it's hard to tell from photographs. 6 feet should be fine... if someone needs to make it a bit longer that shouldn't be a problem.

There was some talk a few posts back about common diameter wooden dowels that are available. I'll go back and see what that person came up with for a dowel size that's good and then you could scale your print to fit over that. This way the kits will be easier to find a staff for and assemble.

*EDIT*

It seems that the prevailing wisdom was that a 3/4" diameter was best in terms of strength and the closest to the "right" size. That commentor mentioned that they used 3/4" PVC because they couldn't find a 3/4" dowel rod any longer than 4 feet. I personally believe that I;ve found longer dowel rods at the Depot before, but that may be a concern for people wanting to use wood--as Division 6 pointed out you can see the original prop was built on wood before casting.

Okay, it will be scaled to accept a 3/4" dowel, rod or pipe. I'll get a quote for you all in a bit. Also, I would think using couplers would be a good idea, to allow the staff to break down for easier transport. These could likely be pretty easily hidden underneath the "wrapped" portions of the staff's body.

here's another thought...
Rey's Staff 7.jpg
The "fitting" just to the right of the small gap looks alot like the slip joint fittings on those expandable paint roller rods...the kind you use to paint up tall walls. I wonder if one of those could be used to a base for this, and the middle section of that could be wrapped up. The other bonus is then the length is adjustable for all users.

Just a thought... it might also save printing that part of the attached pieces.

I scaled it out to about 6' as well.
The 4' toy is 3/4" dia, so something in the 1" range should be about right.
The Enfield slings are 1 3/16" wide.

Couplers hidden is what I was planning.

I used 3/4" pvc pipe. Which does not measure 3/4, it has an outside diameter of approx 1 1/32". I personally think that is about right and any larger will start to look too fat.

as for the extendable poles i see an issue with those as they are typically made from 2 pieces where 1 slides inside the other......which would leave you with 2 different sizes of pipe. So that would require changing the pieces to fit each section. Also they are often fluted instead of round. I would look at sources for 1 inch wood dowels made from pine in 6 ft lengths or a way to firmly join 2 shorters pieces where the wrappings go.

I'd be interested in a staff depending on price, and it doesn't need to be by the premiere. Theater won't allow it in anyway.

division6, thanks so much for posting the pics of your bracer, etc.!! It is really helpful. I finally understand how it works! I'll be attempting it this weekend.

Anyone who is still looking for pants, I found these on Amazon.

They are made out of "Milk Silk", which is actually somehow made from milk, which I'd never heard of before. They took about three weeks to receive. They are super soft and a bit clingy. The pockets aren't exactly right, but the wrap will hide them somewhat, so for a no-sew solution, they will do. They are "one-size", but I recommend them if you are petite.

Can I just throw a HUGE thank you to everyone who's contributed to this thread. I'm making a very short notice attempt to create Rey's costume for a party in a few weeks and all this overwhelming amount of information has been immeasureably helpful! :)

I've had to resort to buying the ready-made costume staff off of Amazon and I'm not bothering with the backpack - maybe also not the pouch as it's probably going to be warm as hell at the venue so less will be more. The info you guys have put together on the goggles, fabrics, etc has been fantastic so, again, just wanted to say thank you.

As I'm on a budget, I've gone with the following items - which isn't anywhere as precise (like division6's fantastic creations) as I'd love to be but some fellow UK residents may find the links useful:
Gloves: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141788601374
Strap for staff: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281709384021
Trousers: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111621267898
Cotton for making the under-tunic: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261975857145
Crinkly polyester for the drape: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/381452181917
Dye for dirtying up the above fabrics+trousers: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200690804794
Planning to buy a long-sleeved knitted top from Primark to use for the head-wrap.
I've got additional bits of fabric, leather, webbing, clips etc left over from when I made Babydoll from Suckerpunch and one of Black Widow's jumpsuits that I'm also trying to use up for making the leg wraps, bracer, belt, etc.

I'm going to follow the basics of this guide for making the goggles as I can't find the lenses you guys talk about available to buy in the UK for quick delivery:
http://www.wholesalehalloweencostumes.com/blog/diy-star-wars-rey-costume/
Bought these for the base: http://www.lawson-his.co.uk/jsp-iles-stratos-chemical-and-impact-clear-goggles-g-st-21c-rtl01
And will chop up & modify these for the lenses: http://www.lawson-his.co.uk/jsp-asa...green-tinted-safety-spectacles-asa430-020-300
Will probably wrap a small torch in worbla and paint it for the goggle-light thingy.

Since everyone at this party has the same notice as I do for this, I'm hoping there's a chance I'll still win something for my efforts. ;) If I do, I'll reference this thread!

I would def be interested in a kit as well!

Also...

Ladies who ordered the accurate boots, how long did it take to get the boots in?

My GF's took about four weeks to ship and then another two weeks or so to arrive, IIRC, but we pre-ordered them. They appear to have lots more options "In Stock" now.

And just a reminder.. we have a pair of size 40s that are a bit too big for her feet so if anyone is finding their 37-39 a bit too snug, we're looking to trade down! ;)

Okay, I'm working on pricing but I need to know what "default" length and diameter should be first to calculate material/print time.

Does this seem like the proper scale, more or less??

Daisy Ridley is about 5'7" so we assumed 6" for the default staff based on pics like these, did we estimate it too long?

I might be interested depending on the price. It looks great so far.

A new shot of her blaster in the latest TV-spot. I've been looking for a way to contribute to the Episode 7 effort with a small run of kits or something and this will be it. Time for me to crack my knuckles and get started on a master pattern! Hopefully there will be a flood of reference as soon as the film is out but there's enough to get me started.

Most likely gonna want one! The grip looks like a Broomhandle Mauser... i'm sure the rest is custom.

DIVISON6:

You and I already knew that ;-)

seriously... it makes total sense to have them attached, and even if they weren't I think I'd still do it just to keep from having to adjust those bloody wraps ALL OF THE TIME as I know i would have to.
