George Lucas's museum finds a home in Los Angeles

What's that look like?

Word is chicago got shot down due to people trying to 'protect the area' which purported a parking lot....whatever....
and that the SF site was on a hard to access island.

Find it hard to believe no other city was worthy though.

why leave the paradise of earthquakes, wood fires, gang violence and traffic jams?

yeah. doesn't seem like they looked to hard.. just wanted to wait until a place in la was available, while gaining press in the process.

To be fair, LA has changed considerably in recent years, it's still a dump overall but it has gotten better. It's also worth noting that the proposed location is pretty ideal since it puts it right along side several other LA museums, like the LA County Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum, and the California Science Center; this means that in one day you can see Star Wars related stuff, dinosaur fossils, classic works of art, and the space shuttle Endeavor all without having to get back into your car or bus.

Chicago was the first choice because it gave more people easier (shorter) access to it. Now, a sizable portion of the county has to go 3000+ miles to get there.

But, you know, what about Detroit, Indy, STL, KC, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Denver, OKC etc....lots of big cities in the middle of the country besides chicago.

LA is a lot safer for tourists than Chicago is at this point, the bad areas are going to spread eventually. It would have been nice to see it set up in a smaller city to bring money into that instead of a giant city.

Chicago wasn't the first choice. It was the second choice after the first fell through

First choice was San Francisco. He wanted a specific part of land near the water and the Presidio trust rejected his request and opted to give him another lot of land.
It backfired because Lucas decided to take the museum to Chicago instead. (His wife grew up there)

Once again, Lucas wanted a specific part of land and the city said okay. Fortunately (unfortunately for others) a group of activists sued. They came up with a bunch of
Ridiculous claims. It will tie everything up in court for years so Lucas opted out.

Los Angeles contacted him expressing their strong interest in building the museum. Lucas graduated from USC which is literally down the street. Museum will be built next to their football stadium

Why Los Angeles and not other cities. Kinda obvious. Tourism, USC nearby and Hollywood.

I don't forsee LA dropping the ball. I forsee them getting it done. Museum has so much support from some big studios, local museums and colleges. It's a win win for everyone

Was going through my email and found this today, from a few weeks back, checked here and of course there's thread!

http://www.cgsociety.org/news/article/2963/star-wars-museum-to-be-located-in-los-angeles

The title for this should be "Star Wars relics will go the way of Atlantis when horrific tragedy of California slipping off into the Pacific Ocean occurs". Since the render really looks like a space ship, why not make it an Ark? When the ocean rushes in, the museum just floats out to sea and comes back to the new coastline once the dust settles.

And I certainly wouldn't have put it in Florida, they're gonna be underwater in 20 years! That'd really be an Atlantean adventure park. If they super prepared and had wetdocks installed and made the whole place airtight they could have a Gunganesque Naboo Museum. "Weesa so happy to see you!" <--- A bunch of Jar-Jar greeters could give out lightsaber crystals on leather necklaces like Hawaiians give out leis. That'd be awesome!!!

It's really too bad about Chicago, more international tourists may visit LA, but Chicago would have been easier to get to by American tourists throughout the States since it was more centrally located.

They could have built it on Route 66, "Come on in to see the Laser Swords and Talking Robots!" It would have fit right in with all the other oddity attractions along the way. Talk about a place that could use a boost to their economy... A life size AT-AT could be the draw-in as seen crashing through the trees near the highway before the turn off.
