I am starting to build an almost full scale replica of Big Bird, he will be approx 7'6", and will be covered in around 3000 feathers, today I started work on the beak, made with foam core and upholstery foam.

Oh wow, yes please. The Kermit thread here was delightful, muppet builds are the best.

How tall is Big Bird for real? like 8' ?

He's 8'2", but carroll spinney is a little taller than me, hence the slight height difference

Currently attempting to pattern the beak after adding the remaining upholstery foam, I can see this already coming together, but want to avoid any visible seams or folds if possible.

Fantastic idea! Can't wait to see what you make of this going forward. Gotta love some Big Bird :)

There's some handy BTS shots of various things in the Jim Henson the Works book, notably how they deal with the larger costumed creatures (not specifically Big Bird) but worth checking out all the same. Good luck!

Was reading it the other day but didn't check out the other characters so I'll definitely do that - thank you

The head is coming together nicely, taking a lot of time to glue each feather individually but I'm pleased with how he's looking so far, you can really get a sense of his characterisation despite him not having any eyes yet.

Where can I find those hoops and what are u going to use for wadding/padding
The hoops are spot welded metal poles, shaped Into circles, two separate poles that form half of each circle, the wadding is just standard sheet wadding from a local fabric shop, photos to follow.

Sorry I haven't updated in a while, here is the progress so far, I've made a cover out of yellow fleece and have begun to individually glue around 1000 of the 3000 feathers I intend to use, as you can see here, it is shaping up to look pretty accurate, particularly to the late 80s early 90s model of Big Bird.

Been working on the structure of the body today, it's very lightweight and flexible, but will need wadding to make it actually rounded.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180307/0f3c3c78cb7ba478ec07b6e2fb7e0e99.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180307/91b86ebd1edbf8705bd1f87c5a8421e0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180307/f561e539517a1e9e8a0cadd87c8c0a42.jpg

Great work! Have you seen Adam Savages Totoro build on Youtube? If not I recommend it for being a great inspiration to work out the body padding, since it was done very similarly to how you are doing it.

Yeah I love that video, that's how I got the idea to do this build in the first place! I have actually padded the body already bit haven't yet photographed it, if people are interested then perhaps I will
