CHAPPiE Replica Costume

The project is going strong! Love the whole paint/black wash technique you've applied on your pieces. You should try to have a "half turtle neck"...you know, the one with with the top of the shoulder attached to it (yeah, I'm showing my age here; that was popular in the '70s and '80s)...maybe the vintage store "Ragtime" in Ottawa (they're on Flora, at the corner of Bank street) has it.;)

Peptobismol sub machine gun! :lol

Neck seal should be easy to make! If you ever need help with design ideas for that, look up "stormtrooper neck seals" or "clone trooper neck seals." That will be more or less an idea of how to make it. I now have this amusing image of someone doing a cosplay of this nature scrambling to get into a bathroom stall with EVA foam armor pieces flying about. LOL

I will have to look those up! I wasn't quite sure what to look up, so I'm happy to hear that there is an actual name for it!
I am VERY serious about the bathroom issue... It would be IMPOSSIBLE to go with a one piece because id have to unzip it which means taking off the chest piece, then to get it down i'd need to take off the arms and hands, then i'd need to take off the cod piece... THEN SOMEHOW PUT IT ALL BACK ON.

Thanks for checking in! The progress has been going slow lately due to moving, work, and other things... But I have done some additional black-wash since my last post that I'll upload in a moment. It's super easy to do, but has really good results! I think I do it to everything I make now. Overkill maybe?
I googled a half turtle neck and enjoyed a good few minutes of contained laughter. Is this what you meant? Because thats hilarious. :D

I'll have to run down to Ragtime and look. I don't think I've ever been, I usually stick to value village :p But thats much closer to my apartment so I'll take a look, thank you!

holy crap, love how this is all coming together! outstanding work as always!
Thank you very much! I'll be uploading some more progress in a moment. I'm falling way behind right now with a current move in progress as well as work and other life events but I still hope to be done by this May! I really appreciate the support, you guys keep me motivated! :love

Hello everyone!

Back again from a busy weekend of lugging boxes up flights of stairs and building the cursed IKEA furniture. I managed to find some cans of paint after visiting multiple stores and was sure to stock up this time so I didn't run out again... thank god it still existed.

So here is the newest progress of the legs:

After two coats of royal blue Tremclad spraypaint:

A close up of a thigh before my first black-wash:

And after blackwash:

After doing a coat of black-wash I like to go over it with a wet rag to reduce the overall layer of black. This makes the dirt and weathering look a bit more natural and spontaneous instead of evenly laid out. The image on the left is before I go over it with a wet rag, and the right is after a wet rag.
IMG_20180326_081339.jpgIMG_20180326_081333.jpg

Heres what i've got done so far... keep in mind all my leg pieces still need to have a wet rag passed over them and they need to be accented with silver paint + paint chips, so the weathering isn't even close to done. Sadly with the very cold and windy weather we've had lately it took me several days to get my spray paint layers down evenly (without entirely painting myself) and dried enough to black-wash.
IMG_20180326_081137.jpgIMG_20180326_081237.jpgIMG_20180326_134414_519.jpg

Oh yes, there will also soon be more progress on my peptobismol gun! I have it black-washed now, but I'll admit I forgot to take a photo! Stay tuned!

Where's the fun in not painting yourself at least a little bit? When I painted my Titanfall stuff, I looked like I fell into a bucket of paint. Mainly because I am clumsy when it comes to arts and crafts and extremely impatient. Haha. This looking nice! You don't have much to go, but those feet look like they will be very difficult...

Yes!! That's the turtle neck I was talking about;) Very '80s but it'll be easy to wear (not too hot) and will do the job. Those pieces you've made are the bomb and the costume is gonna rock big time:cool Keep up the great work!

Time is passing so quickly! we are now 31 days away from Comic Con!

I've been overly busy lately (always seems that way anyway) but I've finally got more pieces plastidipped and painted! It was a pain in the ass waiting for some good weather so I could do some work outside. I didnt actually take too many progress photos of my pieces for some reason, but I do have some photos of what I got done/have in the works.

I finally got the legs all painted (sans the knee, it's still in the spray painting phase) I still want to add a strip of tougher foam as the belt on the backs of the legs.
(see reference images below)

Stacked together it now makes a leg shape! (front, side and back) and a closer shot of that black panel mid paint job.
IMG_20180410_081834.jpgIMG_20180410_081743.jpg30572134_10155187655670458_1690942707632963584_o.jpg30442824_10155187656255458_7652629770026352640_o.jpg30531046_10155187656650458_8643730831203893248_o.jpgIMG_20180409_214903.jpg

As you see in the front and side shots above, there is an extra two font pieces and an extra side piece. The front pieces are the upper thigh panel where the leg attaches to the hips, and the cod piece. The cod piece is not yet complete, there will be another part attached to the bottom, however that part is black so it didn't need to be spray painted—this means I can build it separately and attach it after everything was painted. The side panel is kind of like CHAPPiEs hip, it will mount above the side thigh piece. (see reference images below)

Front cod piece and booty armour
IMG_20180327_191005.jpgIMG_20180407_151639.jpgIMG_20180327_180248.jpg

Spray painted cod piece (minus the bottom attachment) and some other bits and pieces. The long black panels will be on the back/side, you can see it in the reference images, they are to be black I believe... so they haven't been painted yet, just given a coat of plasidip. The dark image is of the booty and a knee pad, they're currently drying. I also have the two side panels with their first coat of paint... above you can see the drawn pattern for that piece.

Thats all I've got for now folks! If this evening is productive I should have more for you soon! Thanks for your patience!

Went home and did some more painting!

I'm eager to get this project wrapped up! (not that I don't enjoy it, I just need to get out my house for once... especially with the weather warming up!)
I spent most of my night working on the codpiece and the back butt panel. I did a black wash coat, a wet cloth pass, and some silver detailing. I really feel like things are starting to come together!

Butt Panel Blackwash:

Cod Piece Blackwash:

Finished pieces:

And a fitting test!

I'm really happy with the progress I'm currently making, so there will be much more coming up over the next few days/weeks. You guys have really helped keeping me moving forward with this project. It's only my second foam build so I felt like I may have bit off more than I could chew. But you guys are so supportive that I have just been hacking away at it piece by piece. THANK YOU SO MUCH! <3

We are approaching the deadline and I'm pumped to bring this baby to the Ottawa Comic Con! Hope to see some of you there!

What do you mean "since the weather is warming up"? Don't go out on Saturday nor Sunday :D Crap coming down!! Besides that, back to the build: that cod piece looks more like a chastity belt (I kid of course;)) Seriously, it rocks from where I stand. Eager to see it all come together!

This is great!

I've made a couple of bits out of foam (mainly because I'm poor but also because I don't have any kind of workshop until I move so I have to create everything on my livingroom floor.)

I have to say the detail you've got here is spectacular, all those different layers really sell the costume and whilst I'm sure it's been mind numbing at times it's certainly worth the time you've put in. I've not seen the movie myself but 'm very inspired to go for a more complicated foam build after seeing this.

Great work.

TTM

Yeah so much for the warmer weather eh? It's a damn ice storm out there! I cant so any plastidip or spray paint for the torso inside so I'm really annoyed! WHAT HAPPENED TO SPRING?!

The cod piece does look like a chastity belt, I 100% agree. LOL Either that or a metal thong. It's comical to wear, I just end up rubbing it on people (thats a normal thing to do right?) I still need to add a few extra pieces to it to make took like a real pelvic region because compared to the torso it now looks WAY too small. I think once the hip, thigh and butt plates are added it will look a bit more balanced.

Down to 23 days now, nearly showtime!

Thank you so much!

Working with foam is the most affordable way to build in my opinion. It's the only thing I use — no fancy 3d printer, no worbla, and no laser cutters. It can be tedious and time consuming but a really rewarding experience. I dont have a work stop either, I do all my builds on my living room floor too! (oh boy, is it ever a mess)
IMG_20180108_222644.jpg
Eventually I hope to invest in a larger desk to help maintain order. but for now, its a tornado space. *shrug*

I'm glad you like the detail! A lot of it has been mind numbingly painful work... but I think sometimes having the finer details can make a costume look more professional even if it's only a foam build. It's taken hundreds of hours so far over the space of 4 months but I am down to my deadline now with only 23 days left on the clock! Hopefully the weather will be nice by the weekend so I can get things primed and painted!

I am excited to see what build you decide to embark upon with that inspiration! Got anything in mind? If you decide to do one please tag me and I'll pop over to your thread and make sure I track the progress! Im excited to see!
