CHAPPiE Replica Costume

Down to 22 days and I've started to get the torso ready for paint!
I have a question about the battle damage on the chest... does anyone have any tips/tricks on how this could be done?

The back and front of the torso were actually the first pieces I built of my cosplay... however I never actually got around to finishing them.
I started off by building a pattern of the body in Adobe Illustrator
Screen Shot 2018-01-30 at 9.39.48 AM.png
Some of my references varied between renders by Weta Workshop, movie screengrabs and photographs of the very detailed Chappie 1:6 model from Bens Collectables (youtube).

combining my references with my patterns, I got to work. Each piece is made out of layers and layers of EVA foam.
So here's where I am now! this piece is finally ready for a coat of plastidip and paint, however in Canada we just got a big ice storm... SO I cant get any painting done
until the weather finally clears up! (fingers crossed for this weekend!)

My foam tubing needs to be trimmed and secured still, Im missing two side panels, the shoulders need some rivets drilled in and obviously attaching. But I think it's coming along okay.
Any advice on the battle damage is always appreciated!

Battle damage should be easy to do: take your piece of foam and cut the different "exploded" pieces. You can take your hairdryer to make them curl (like in the pic) and then, when you're satisfied with the look, you can use a hot iron( the one you use to weld) and damage/round the edges. Hopes it helps:)

Finally have the torso in paint mode, the head is fully wired up and animating, and my vinyls have been printed, now working on cutting them all out. 15 days left until Comic Con.

Took a mix of suggestions for my battle damage (thank you @joberg for your input!)

Base Coat:

First round of blackwash:

Printed matte adhesive vinyl decals: (special thanks to @Kenobi for exchanging sticker files with me)

Cutting out all the stickers individually:
this is still a work in progress... painting will need to be finished for the rest to be stuck on... the cutting is also time consuming, the white decals on the front panel are smaller than my pinky fingernail and took around 2 hours of constant cutting to get be done correctly and placed as per my reference. I only finished right before going to bed yesterday, so I thought I'd give you a sneak peak!

I really feel like the decals help bring the design to life, I can't wait to add the rest! (No decals vs. first few decals)
IMG_20180424_222458.jpgIMG_20180425_223205.jpg

I also got around to building and painting the knees:
IMG_20180418_212221.jpgIMG_20180422_162713.jpg

and some shots of the head, I did actually add a bit more silver to the head after reviewing these photos:
I promise it does actually animate now and fully fit on my head. I'll upload some test fits and videos soon!
(a special thanks to TJack for providing me with the mesh material on the head, without you I wouldn't have been able to bring this character to the level of realism I had hoped to achieve) :)

Great stuff! Yep, lettering is always tricky to do...to make sure that the letters are straight, you'll always make sure to have a L pattern to place each one of them at the correct place (vertically and horizontally). Did you do the "exploded" part with hot glue? Really eager to see that costume on you.:cool

The writing was painful to do... I used a ruler and basically just took hours and hours placing letters then peeling them back up if they didnt look straight... never again.
The exploded part ended up being Drywall putty, PVA glue, and caulking all mixed together (I do a lot of stuff with Drywall putty surprisingly) I think it worked out okay!

Finally got around to doing some weathering... with 10 days left, I'm feeling the pressure now!
I still need to add the crush sticker to the front and weather the middle blue piece on the back.

Front and back when they're not attached together:

I cant tell you guys how much I appreciate having you here to motivate me and keep me moving on this build. I am so close to the deadline now and I hope to make you all proud! I hope to get a test fitting complete by this weekend with some better quality images for you all to see!
(yes, the camera on my cellphone is HORRIBLE, I'm aware... I'm just always snapping photos in a rush!)

Yep, I use a lot of Drywall putty myself...good compound and sands easily! Very good weathering (are you using crumpled plastic bags/saran wrap)?

Hey guys!

Ottawa comiccon has now come and gone... and WOW, it was crazy! The costume was a major hit with so many people (including kids... which was odd since it's an R rated film). It was AMAZING to meet/get photos with/talk to so many people... and to even get a shoutout from Neill Blomkamp both on Twitter and Instagram. It's been a hell of an experience!

Of course theres always an issue with the costume the day of — as you can see in chocobomeow's photo my right eye was dim for the first two hours of the day — le sigh. By the way HELLO chocobomeow, and thank you for coming to say "hi" and for posting a picture! <3 It means more to me than you know!

So, beyond all that, here's what you all have been waiting for — the final images and closeups!

Fantastic costume and result: you deserve all the praises in the world to have tackled that one! I wish you could take more pics in some kind of appropriate light/set...that would be awesome!!:cool

I am happy to say that I will be attending Montreal ComicCon in July, so If you're there please come and say hello!

I will be posting more pictures soon — Sadly none that are in the appropriate setting joberg, it's just TOO HOT outside to get any photographs out and about right now. Phew! Hopefully soon though!
