1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Try rotating the loops and, if you have them, add additional caps. Add a cross bar between the "legs" and it would look like a breaker handle. Looking good!

I love looking at things and thinking "greeblie!"

Hey H,

I planned on adding dowels in between the two arms to give it that "handle" look - great minds! :) I'm going to go back, take a look at it and see if it can't be salvaged. A buddy of mine, Scott, has some great looking real world mechanical greeblies that I might use instead.

Stand by!

In the hall, we see the seldom-seen Falcon bathroom door, three tanks of hyperdrive fluid, and a naughty chair for Threepio... :p

Sofa, that greeblie looks like a grasshopper on...grass:D The middle part is great, but those side "things" are a bit off (my two cents, of course). Besides that, looking good and thanks to the Laser cutter (finally).

Hi Gang,

Rain Rain Rain... The rain prevented me from moving very far this weekend but there were a few breaks in the clouds that allowed me to do some things... Not much...

I mounted the cockpit entrance panels to the frame

The idea is the notches cut into the wood should allow me to carefully bend the shape around the window creating the form I need

Got some trimming to do...

The wood is SO fragile and dry I need to soak the pieces in the tub for several days before I attempt to curve around window. Hopefully the water will penetrate the pine and allow enough flexibility. Fingers crossed!

Hey T,

Refilling the Hyperdrive tanks is much cheaper than getting new tanks! ;)

Hey J,

Thanks! Yipee for the laser cutter! Yeah... the grasshopper greeblie is going to have to be reworked. The two side arms need a bit of a redesign. I have an idea... I might try to get to it this evening.

Oh man, this is going to be cool! I'm subscribing to this so I can follow along. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Hey BF,

Welcome! Always nice to see a new face! We're excited to this part of the project finished as well!

Sofaking01,

Here is what it will look like if you don't have two sides and you add two posts. I also shorten the height of the center circle. Thoughts?

Hi Gang,

Not much of a weekend update. Spent most of yesterday cleaning the workshop and getting ourselves more organized. Also, the rain, as usual, decides to make an appearance on the weekend making it tough to use the power tools... The laser cutting seems to be holding steady so that's a good thing and I was able to knock a few things out.

Finally updated and cut this greeblie

Hey Iz,

LOVE the 3D models you created! The coil I added is actually one I pulled from the cockpit entrance greeblie pack and is used for visual reference only. The actual one will have a MUCH lower profile similar to your model. :)

I think I'll go back to my original idea and have just the one "grasshopper" leg and see how it looks. I still need to get some dowels for the horizontal posts.

OK... I'll finish it up and see how it turns out. ;)

Hi Gang,

Quick early morning update! Another cockpit greeblie finished up and ready to mount!

New vs Old - not much of a difference but I had to redesign so I could use the existing mounting holes (the right didn't have any holes)

Hi Gang!

Well... Soaking the wood for these last few days has done nothing to help make the pine more flexible. I don't know if I need to leave the pine in the water longer or rip new strips with deeper cuts allowing for more flexibility... I have a few more options. Maybe pressure treated wood? It's already soaked in chemicals and is somewhat flexible?
20160918_183025_zpsiryqxfnq.jpg

Does anybody have any ideas?

Also, some personal things came up last night and I was unable to get to the shop. But it's the weekend so lots of time for some forward progress!

EDIT: I think I figured it out! :)

Why not do it same way they make archways make a rack size and shape needed then wrap one thin strip around get then fixed in place then add next one gluing together keep repeating to you get the size needed. To get it so is angled either cut after dry or cut edge of wood to angle and size before fitting together. I know this be bit fiddly and time consuming but when done be neat finish and strong and good thing is technically you can make it as big or as small as needs so could do whole ring in one go if you want simply join multiple sections together as you go round.

Hey LB,

I'm going back to the idea I originally had for the PVC strips. I'm going to cut several strips of 3 ply and screw them together and rip the angle I need, remove the screws then rip the width required. I'll then lay each strip of ply one at a time around the window layering up the strips and recreating the angle I originally cut.

I hope that makes sense? :)

STEAM is the answer you are looking for with wood. On canal boats that have 1ft square oak beams (least I think it's oak) as edge protection, I saw a programme once about one being restored and the put the beam into a steam over for a few hours, then clamped it into place and it curved around the front of the barge and stayed there with fixings etc.

Hey R,

That would have been my preferred choice but I don't have a steamer. That's why I used water hoping to get the "same" affect. I think I've once again over thought the process...

But I think I've figured it out using the layered up ply. I'll be sure to take detailed images of the process. :)

I'm afraid nothing less than steam will help you.The idea is to loosen the lignin fibres relative to each other, allowing them to slide and set in new places when it cools. For that it needs to be above the boiling point. Hot water simply isn't hot enough, you would need at least a pressure cooker, and likely hooter than that.
