1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

hi! maybe a bit off-topic-y but you probably all remember that site: ship of riddles by Robert Brown? about the Falcon? when I found it again I thought of all of you guys and was wondering what version of the Falcon's blue-prints are you following? we are talking about that very site/idea/plan/ in this thread: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=165721, and even though I don't want to Hijack Sofa's thread, maybe the two topics come close to each other, no?

Hey BK,

Actually, the two topics do go hand in hand. The question of which plans are we following is not out of the ordinary. As you may know, Steve Starkiller has done an absolutely amazing job getting both the interior sets and the exterior sets to match up. While this did compromise both interior and exterior screen accuracy, the visual impact is so MINIMAL that you either don't even notice it or accept the minor changes in order for the ship to even exist - i.e. the quad station tunnel and the overall size of the exterior - most of the interior is screen accurate. So, Starkillers full scale 3D rendering is our master plan / blueprint. The areas of "concern" are the "never been on screen" parts of the ship.

For me, the blueprints, cut away drawings / models and other various iterations of the MF are all works of art. The time and effort all these talented folks put forth is nothing short of amazing! However, areas like the engines and engine "bay" seem to fall short of what I feel that particular part of the ship should / would look like within a "used" and heavily greeblied universe when compared to all the other SW vehicles.

I always felt the engine bay would be a cramped space similar to a submarine with these massive boiler like tubes with an exorbitant amount of greeblies attached projecting out from the center of the engine bay to the back of the ship. But even that falls short of what I feel is the best and only solution. Imagine if the original 1977 ILM designers had / took the opportunity / time to sketch out and design what "their" vision of the engines would have been had the original story / script called for a shot of Han or Chewie working on said engines. I can't even imagine what Joe Johnston and Co would have come up with. For me, that would be something really exciting and something special because it would be coming from the original designers and visionaries! And it would immediately become cannon!

Using the "SW Sketch Books" and the "Art of SW" as inspiration, I've done sketch after sketch of what I think the engines could / would look like if we were to ever reach that point of the build. Starkiller and I have even collaborated on a few 3D designs using common household objects but held off posting any images as they were only concepts and we are nowhere near that point of the build. I can post some images if you are all interested?

Anywho, I hope this helps and gives you an idea of where we're headed and some of the fun obstacles we see ahead of us! :)

What bit of the ship are han and leia stood in when he goes to kiss her in ESB only for 3PO to interput?

Imagine you're Luke practicing with the saber, looking at Obi-Wan. Follow the wall behind him to your right. The alcove is in the corner, to the left of the port side circular corridor opening.

(not that that part of the set existed in ANH, but you get me...)

Han, and later Threepio, enter from the entrance from the hold. Leia exits screen left, aft, to some area never seen.

That alcove was turned into a closet in TFA. (where Han gets blasters for Finn and Rey)

I’ve seen Steve’s YouTube video (I’m gonna watch it again!!) and it is indeed nothing short of amazing. Changes to the exterior size where to be expected, the exteriors don’t match because the ship is too small!! I’m glad you are going with a good blueprint, I take the forward hold is located squarely center, behind the mandibles right?

I fully agree with you SK, the engines are probably a wonder to watch, and I still hope against all odds that Ep8 will show new parts of the Falcon, even those parts!!

post those images!!!!!
I’m gonna go with Matt here: POST THEM!!!!

I have posted here a comparison file I pulled together 2 nights ago, you can see there the entrance that Treadwell talks about ;)

Hi Gang,

I've had many requests to post images of the MF engine concept drawings I've done over the past few years. This is just a small sample. Enjoy!

Not my favorite...

Yep, those drafts are looking interesting to say the least...it's bound to keep changing or merging one drawing with another. Keep up the great work Sofa!!

Hi Gang,

Don't you think it time for an update? :)

I bounced all over the place during the long holiday weekend so bear with me! I started with removing the Volvo Panels and not only aligning the greeblies but figuring out where to cut all the access holes for mounting

20170115_112741_zps24zlwu7m.jpg

I wanted the access panels to be hidden so I placed them behind the Volvo Dash Clusters. This decision left me with VERY little room to place my hands / tools but it made the most sense

One of the best starts to the work week is browsing your thread to look at the weekend updates!

I like the new pipe arrangement! The reason I felt the old straight was a bit off is I believe an access panel would have to give access to something that would need occasional adjustment, and those boxes you put in look the part!

I have a question about the cup greeblies (and others in the same vein):

Wouldn't it be easier to cut them from PVC tubing rather than laser-cutting and then glue together stacks of rings? It would save a lot of filling and sanding. I know one usually get the best and fastest results with the tools one know the best, and you are a master of the laser cutter, but still?

...oh, and I really love the laser cut guides you made to space out the tiles. It's the little details like that which keeps this thread so hugely inspirational for me!

Two quick suggestions
1 get Samantha to help more
And 2 the pipe section wire join it into the wire that comes down the back wall section make it look like they been spliced together so looks like bits being improvised like a lot of han and chewies repairs upgrades more.
Just use a scotch block or similar plug coupling so easy to pull apart put back together again also helps link the two together.
