More to Follow So Stay Tuned!

So I didn't have any luck with the cowl files. Had 4 failures to print in the same spot no matter where or how I placed the file on the printer. So plan B. I'm Converted Joshua Maruska Nav Chair file to a STL file and I'm trying to print it. The Cowl was to big to print as one file so I sliced into two files. The 1st half (bottom half) took 65 Hrs to print.

It came out really good. Now the dreaded top part. Get this 123 hrs to print. Yes 5 days to print. hopefully with no issues.

Hi Gang,

Progress on the pads continues...
IMG_20180425_054532_zpskxrdywed.jpg

IMG_20180425_190143_zpswrol4r1e.jpg

Added a few more highlights to the rips and tears
IMG_20180425_190053_zpsrlwy8urm.jpg

I was thinking about adding a thin layer of coffee and coffee grounds to simulate dirt and grime... What do you all think?

Door pads
IMG_20180425_190151_zps1fgb4lv5.jpg

Not sure if you can tell, but I've been beating the cr@p out of the one pad that Han hits in ESB - left pad. You can see the beginning of the wear and tear. I will also add a bit more dark wash to that particular area
IMG_20180425_190117_zpsfjmkic0b.jpg

Just a few more door pads to paint (not including the cockpit entrance pads). I should have some black paint on a few, if not most, of these pads later today!

More to follow! :)

Pads look great!! Kathleen K. would be proud.

Thanks, T! I've always wondered if the folks from LFL, Disney, Fox, etc poke around and see what the fans are doing? :)

OH WOW! Those prints are fantastic! And they have the rivets! Fingers crossed no spaghetti!!!

Sofa the pads look totally amazing, as always your work is outstanding, the 3D prints are looking great, with your skill and attention to detail could you not scratch build them quicker yourself in less time ?

Hey I remember a while ago you said you might put a pressure sensor there, to tun the lights on. Are you going to do that after all?

Hey B,

Thank you very much! I appreciate the vote of confidence! :)

Izzy has done an amazing job with all these different 3D models. A HUGE Mega Kudos to him for his continued efforts. I considered making the head piece (cowl) from scratch but 3D printing is much more precise than "flat packing" all the MDF and acrylic together. For me, it made more sense to go that direction. I'm hoping we'll be able to make a mold of the cowl and then be able to knock them out whenever we need one.

Hey OC,

That's the still the plan! We have to get the basics done first before a big event coming up in May but it will DEF be addressed. :)

"I was thinking about adding a thin layer of coffee and coffee grounds to simulate dirt and grime... What do you all think?"

Yes! And the lingering aroma should help block out Chewie's scent...unless he smells like roses and puppies...in that case, not needed.

LMAO!!! Oh yeah... I never really thought about the smell.

Fan: Wow... what a cool project! Can I see it again?

Me: Sure. (To myself) That's funny. I dont recall someone wanting to see it a second time"

Great update Sofa (and kudos for IzzyMel and its wonderful work)...those pads really look the part now! Wear and tear, that's the name of the game...now, about that coffee grind.
It's the MF!! Not Starbucks :D But, if you really want to get some dark color in there, you could always use tea.

Hi Gang!

You know what time it is? ;)

Continued work on the pads!

IMG_20180428_205951_zpsgov2yhjv.jpg

I love the look of this pad - all the little cracks and divots make it pop. I might repaint it. For some reason the color wash is not consistent - but then again it does add character!
IMG_20180428_210003_zpsbjsrhfxm.jpg

Lots and lots of detail work. I found using sandpaper is a really good way to bring out natural highlights.
IMG_20180428_211520_zps3nztqprx.jpg

Two pads temp in place
IMG_20180428_121015_zpsio4sdydp.jpg

IMG_20180428_121022_zpsijrfasym.jpg

I then worked on the cockpit entrance side pads. We CNC'd these pads a while back. It was nice to finally get to them

As I mentioned, I love how this pad turned out. Unfortunately, the pad doesn't fit!
IMG_20180429_085719_zpssya49j1v.jpg

In all my excitement, I measured wrong and now there is a little bit of overhang! This is Chewie's side. UGH

Han's side looking in!
IMG_20180429_085737_zpshtvu087h.jpg

Marked the line and took the pad over to the band saw. I really didn't want to cut this part of the pad but it was the only way to be sure I got an accurate angle
IMG_20180429_090008_zps6xmku34t.jpg

Reduced the interior sides with the table saw
IMG_20180429_090015_zpsz42gg4tr.jpg

Routed and sanded the edges
IMG_20180429_091510_zpsdl0xbjs1.jpg

IMG_20180429_092120_zps3ky9x7mn.jpg

Recovered with Podge and Towels
IMG_20180429_103903_zpsuejxfizz.jpg

The center piece had to be cut as well
IMG_20180429_103915_zpsiwgwsybc.jpg

Perfect!
IMG_20180429_131000_zps9ztqcrzq.jpg

IMG_20180429_131006_zpskqmfdtwu.jpg

I then repainted
IMG_20180429_150905_zpsqae6d87y.jpg

Continued with the detail work
IMG_20180429_163601_zpsa00ravrx.jpg

IMG_20180429_163627_zpsfzjcxh7j.jpg

The cockpit entrance side pads still had to be put together
IMG_20180429_104318_zps14f8ojhu.jpg

IMG_20180429_104331_zpswwffnp2r.jpg

IMG_20180429_111436_zpseqscsvo3.jpg

I had to remove a certain amount of material so the pads can rest flush against the panel(s)
IMG_20180429_112310_zpss0gw4i3m.jpg

These pads are not as deep as the cockpit side but I still had to notch two edges
IMG_20180429_112241_zpsgcholuip.jpg

IMG_20180429_112317_zpsu5n979in.jpg

Mark the sides to cut
IMG_20180429_112829_zpsiiete1lb.jpg

Rip across the table saw
IMG_20180429_115617_zpsovj5wup5.jpg

Hand cut the rest - foam is really tough to cut through! ;)
IMG_20180429_115821_zpsvyqqzcbx.jpg

Add some filler pieces to extend the length (the door frame angles changed shape a long way back)
IMG_20180429_122538_zpsm1kt4f2c.jpg

Fill the gaps with Podge
IMG_20180429_130919_zpsgygcigfo.jpg

Let the Podge dry and then eventually cover (this week)
IMG_20180429_130928_zpscdqaijzr.jpg

Jake stopped by to continue his wiring adventures

LED strip

Neat!
IMG_20180428_154254_zpskaomtkmk.jpg

Not to get into too much detail as to "why" (more later) but we married up the console and seats for the VERY first time in a LONG while! Enjoy

Wow..what an amazing project!:):thumbsup

Hey K,

Thanks so much! We're getting there!

- - - Updated - - -

With the various connections between Star Wars and 2001, has anyone suggested the Falcon padding being inspired by some of the 2001 sets?

Hey Lt W,

i thought the same thing. I know there were a LOT of influences from 2001 to SW. I can't remember who said it or when but I believe there the inspiration does in fact exist.

Great update Sofa (and kudos for IzzyMel and its wonderful work)...those pads really look the part now! Wear and tear, that's the name of the game...now, about that coffee grind.

Thanks, J!

LOL! True. Han is no Barista! I was only considering using coffee because of the grounds and the cool texture it would leave. I could always use scale model pigments or just leave well enough alone. ;)

Mega Kudos for Iz's continued work!

- - - Updated - - -

Hubba hubba! That's just dang pretty!

Thank you, SB! I must admit, I did stand back and soak it in. It was really cool seeing the console back in place - especially with the seats!

Do I have 3 finals on Wednesday? Yep

Did I just spend the past 3 and a half hours catching up with this thread to avoid studying? You bet your asteroid.

Great work.

Hey M,

LOL! I appreciate the sacrifice! Now get back to those books! ;)

Ahhhh cockpit porn
you make an old man happy

Hey B,
