X-Wing Toy Conversion *Finished*

Re: X-Wing Toy Conversion

It's time I get caught up on my WIP photos.

Working on the butt plate and mounting. I didn't go with the typical location for the bottom mount because I just wanted to do something different. I'm not going for accuracy here, just wanting to put in some familiar details.

100_9306.jpg 100_9307.jpg 100_9308.jpg

I tried cutting out the window of the toy canopy but the plastic is too soft. It's a better idea to scratch build a new one.

I decided to rebuild the front fuselage because I wasn't happy with the way the toy looks and this gave me an opportunity to have a mount in the nose. I used a bunch of scrap styrene to build this area up.

Then I built some cockpit details and test fit it with a new canopy.

Re: X-Wing Toy Conversion

Her's some shots of the outer fuselage build. I forgot to take more pictures of this section. Also more cockpit details. I had to do a little alteration to Biggs's legs and butt so he could fit right in the cockpit.

Re: X-Wing Toy Conversion

To get the wings in the proper "X" position that I want, I had to add some styrene so the wings could mount just right.

Re: X-Wing Toy Conversion

Finally a coat of primer followed by a lite coat of flat white before I start airbrushing the base coat.

Re: X-Wing Toy Conversion

Wow what an incredible job you did with that vintage collection X-wing. Beautiful.

I’m new to the RPF and I hope I’m not hijacking your thread, but I had recently commissioned my dad to customize three saga collection X-wings to hang in my son’s room. A little backstory here, my dad, a lifelong modeler specializing primarily in warbirds and my mentor in the hobby, had built a whole squadron of WWII fighters that hung in my bedroom growing up. I slept under P40’s, P51’s, P47’s, you name it. So I thought it would be fitting to do the same for my son, except with a Star Wars theme.

The three X-wings were to represent three generations of our family, me, my son, and my dad. I told him he was free creatively to paint and customize them any way he wanted to. Now they were just meant to be repaints, nothing exotic like Randy13’s conversion and certainly not meant to be movie accurate replicas. He added a few little things of his own here and there, some wing detail and some extra fuselage items, but these were largely meant to be just repaints.

Like I said, nothing like Randy’s, but I thought I would share them anyway.

He did a "Red 3" for my son:

He did up a "Red Leader" for me:

Lastly, and probably my favorite, my dad's with a WWII themed version:

I recently picked up a couple of the vintage collection X-wings that I am going to rework on my own and hope to do something more like what Randy did with his. I wish this thread had been around when I had my dad doing ours, there are some really great resources in this post. Things that are significant in the appearance without hacking the entire thing to pieces with a dremel tool.

Again, great job with your's Randy.

Thank you for sharing this Enhancer. What an incredible job your father did. I need to get to the painting stage on this and hope it can come out at least half as good as your dad's work.

Thanks for the compliments Randy! Something tells me that your painting skills will rival your mod and customization abilities though.

Re: X-Wing Toy Conversion

I'm really new to this scratch building, but I'm curious what thickness of styrene did you use to add to the wings?

I'm not going to rebuild the wings but just add to it. After removing all the little raised pieces, I cut out a thin sheet of styrene and etched in the revised panel lines.

The one good thing about the inside of the wings it that there's enough room to add more accurate details. The long thing styrene part in the middle is there for support.

Then a test fit. For now I have just penciled in where surface details will be going.

On the outside of the wings I used thin sheets of styrene which was about .5 mm and to make the inside, I used 1 mm thickness. I used these because it's what I had on hand.

Re: X-Wing Toy Conversion

Sorry for not posting anything in a long time. I need to get caught up on updating this thread.

First, I applied a base coat and then masked out the areas for the markings. I airbrushed all of this using thinned down mixtures of Tamiya paint. The chips were made by using some liquid masking fluid and a hobby knife before the colors completely dried. I also did some light scratches with some fine steel wool.

I then went over everything with the base coat. It's not easy to see in these pictures but it really does tone down the colors and make them blend in more.

The background is my paint booth made out of cardboard. It's not pretty to look at but works very well. ;)

Re: X-Wing Toy Conversion

And now the finished product.

Weathering was mostly done with oil paints brushed on using Turpeniod and paint thinner. One other areas, I airbrushed a dirty dark brownish gray that was not quite black.

Wow ! You did a fantastic job on everything but that paint job is top notch. I hope my Hasbro mod turns out as well as yours.

Very nice conversion and weathering job on this! You have very successfully turned a toy into a great display piece. The X-Wing and TIE look great together,
