Music Today: What happened? (Short Rant)

I quite liked early rap like RUN-DMC, but the stuff today makes my ears bleed. The only recent artist I love is Janelle Monae

Janelle Monáe - Tightrope [feat. Big Boi] (Video) - YouTube

If this song doesn't urge you to get up and boogie, better check your pulse.

I do like old school Rap and I do like Cypress Hill for some reason (voice maybe?).

BTW, every time I hear Ke$ha I imagine dogs start howling along with it. :lol

Now some old school rap, gangster rap, some newish hip-hop like Roots, Mos Def, Nas ; they usually have some good songs with lyrics that tell a story or have clever metaphors instead of just flat out talking about their chains, dripping paint, going hard in the paint etc...

As far as music goes, I'm still living in the 80's.

Right there with you.

As far as Ke$ha goes, I used to like her stuff until I started listening to the lyrics. Not that they're bad or anything, but she sounds stuck up and above everyone else, even the way she delivers the lines in sickening to me.

I know next to nothing about the mechanics of music, but I once heard that a lot of music today is based on the style similar to the ones popularized by James Brown and used by the Beatles in an alternative take of Sgt Pepper's. Singers also follow this pattern. It was claimed that this kind of music is counter-intuitive to the ear and is the reason why so much music today sounds like male bovine defecation, especially to the :darnkids generation.

It's not an age thing entirely. In the 60s who rated the Beatles as being as good as Schubert? Not the kids, but middle-aged classical music critics who actually understood the nuts and bolts of the band's songwriting innovations better than the teenyboppers did....

Songwriting innovations, though....name one big label that cares about them any more...

I was just thinking this recently. I was out in my backyard and some neighbors girls, who were probably 8-10 years old, had a song cranked that had a catchy tune. But as soon as I started hearing the lyrics, I was like, WTF are they listening to? The song was talking about suicide and other stuff. I was interested to find the song, so I googled some of the lyrics and found it -'I Must Be Emo' by Hollywood Undead. I was amazed that the parents were letting them listen to this song at 8-10 years of age.

some of the lyrics - "
Stop my breathing and slit my throat", "They say they already have a *****, they don't need another one", "When I get depressed I cut my wrists in every direction", "Hearing songs about getting dumped give me an erection"

I don't know, but maybe I'm just old.

Hey guys, new here, but wanted to comment on this. That song in particular is not an official Hollywood Undead song, it was an early song done by two of the members before the band released it's debut album, and is done in Jest to mock the current "Emo" culture/style/whatever the heck is going on.

Hollywood Undead has a lot of good music, with deeply poetic lyrics that give a glimpse of the world that kids are growing up in today. (a song called "Young" is an excellent example of this) Don't get me wrong, they have a bunch of silly, party themed songs too. And No, I wouldn't let kids that young listen to their music unmonitored because much of it speaks of drugs, sex, and all the things you want kids to remain blissfully ignorant of for as long as possible. I let my 12 son listen to select songs ONLY from them.

I am in my 40's and Hollywood Undead is my favorite band. Admittedly, I'm in the upper range of the age spectrum for their fan base, but I really connect with their music. I searched specifically for the term "Hollywood Undead" here (and ran across this post) because they wear masks on stage and I make replicas of them and was thinking about sharing pictures.

But yes, I find that not much music today appeals to me and I've almost given up on anything new being any good. I only accidently ran across HU and became a fan cause I heard one of their songs when I was flipping through channels one day, and thought it was pretty cool. Anyway, that's my two cents on the subject.

The musicans who wrote good music will be never forgotten :p So let's just say, this "new" music will just vanish at some point x)

I'm 23 years old, but I rather like listening to a good song with good text!

Music today is a lot of trash and parents don't do their job to make sure the stuff is appropriate. These are the same parents that let their 8 year olds wear miniskirts and other trashy outfits. If it wasn't a band my folks where familiar with they'd ask around for opinions before letting me get the music. These days they just let the kids do what they want. Have you listened to stuff by Nickleback? There's some very inappropriate stuff. It makes the stuff in the 80s parents had issues with look mild.

I have noticed there is a difference in countries. The UK top 40 is vastly different from the Dutch top 40. I imagine the US's Top 40 is different too.

The amount of rap has (luckily) gone down here and we have a bit more enjoyable music. But I am always happy to go home and listen to my own playlists. Often consisting of heavier styles, whether that's hardstyle/hardcore or metal/rock.

I wouldn't know about modern music.

With very few exceptions, my musical tastes range from ancient up to the 1980s.

I'd rather sit at home listening to Two Steps From Hell than anything that's currently on the radio.

All of the styles of music listed here are still being produced, it's just that none of it is as popular.

I like music with lyrics and actual instruments. I mostly listen to Alternative on satellite radio. A few on there are we'll known, but I don't think any of them get the amount of attention heaped upon the big names. It's not kids fault. I think we are reaching a point where marketing dictates. Something becomes popular because a corporation declares it's the next big thing, so people check it out, and then talk about it. Those bands aren't formed in garages or in dive bars, they are manufactured by an advertising specialist.

Many new songs just seem to have one catchy chorus that is repeated over and over and over. There is nothing else there, but it gets stuck in your head, and next thing you know you are humming it!

There is still good stuff out there, or at least I think so. You just have look past what is front and center, just like movies. If you are in the mood for a little more than what Transformers has to offer, go find something like Only God Forgives or Gravity.

Also, not all the big names are bad. I like everything from Bing Crosby, The Beastie Boys, and The Foo Fighters, but I also kinda like Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. They have actual instruments and lyrics.

To be honest, the argument about 'actual instruments' puts me off. I wrote this on my tumblr not to long ago about that.

I used to be this pretentious ass who said music was only made with real instruments. So hardstyle, hardcore, trance and anything techno was fake music. I only listened metal, rock, numetal etc.
Oh how naive of me. I listen to all kinds of music now. From funk and jazz, to hardcore and hartstyle, hardrock and heavy metal. Every once in a while also rap.

You see… Music isn’t just made with instruments. Music isn’t just made with computers. MY DEFINITION of music has changed entirely. My definition of music is a rhythm, a beat, a sound. A composition of sounds and rhythm that makes me feel something, whether it is rage, energy, happiness or sadness. Music makes me feel. I can merge to the beat and dance all day Music is just that. No matter what it is created with, if it makes me feel something, then it is good.

And this is why I can enjoy Vivaldi and the Defqon.1 festival right next to eachother. (although it’s not the best combination.)

I wish rap would vanish a bit, we're losing radio stations to it. Thankfully i have I heart radio on my pc and digital radio on the cable system. i stopped listening to most music in the 90s when it all went to hell. Classical to about 1992 is mine. Even new stuff from old bands sounds horrid, Bon Jovi should have retired in the 90s for good as they sounds like everything else these days.
