Solo: A Star Wars Story

I'm waiting for a future SW director to make the conscious decision to NOT update/modify any of the existing assets like armor, vehicles or ships.
While I loved R1, it didn't really *need* shoretroopers. They could have used Scouttroopers, for example.

Sent using Tapatalk.

Unfortunately that will never happen while Disney call the shots. Lucas had the story before the toys, now its stories that fit the toys.

Lol...no, I was talking about Alden. My point being that they're gonna shrink Chewie down in promotional materials relative to Alden, in an attempt to conceal Alden's diminutive size.

Hey Wook, slightly off topic, but if you want to see a miniature Chewbacca have a look at the Stephen Chbosky film Wonder (about the kid growing up with facial disfigurement). Chewie appears a couple of times through the film but next to 10 year old kids he looks normal human-sized. IMDB says he played by some chap called Michael Alan Healy. Costume seems reasonable though.

Star Wars has been more about toys and merchandising than story since about 1983.

Agreed. I'm not defending it but Lucas himself was more than happy to slap the SW name on everything in sight right from the beginning. This particular complaint against the over commercialization of SW has been made since at least 1980:

Never knew this, I’m gonna have to check it out!

Although, SW has been on a LOT of stuff over the years, I think Disney is actually slapping the name on EVERYTHING these days. I've never seen so much crap associated with the SW brand since they took over. We are now drowning in STAR WARS!

I don't know-- the Phantom Menace days were pretty insane as well. Star Wars was pretty much licensed to be on everything but sex toys. In fact, pretty much all the big complaints I see about Disney-- the over-marketing, the licensing, the drop in quality, the massive division of the fanbase-- ALL of that stuff was just as prevalent when the PT came about.

Disney can be guilty of a lot of things, but they didn't buy SW just to make movies. SW already had a very well established licensee system that makes a crap ton of money-- probably more than the films themselves. Lucas built that, and that was a huge part of the worth of the IP. They are exploiting a model Lucas built.

Yeah, like I said, I'm not defending it. I remember being grossed out by the amount of tie-ins when the prequels came out and how hard they pushed the "collectible" angle on mass produced items. It was a crock then and it's still a crock.

You're probably right that the amount has increased now. But it's good to remember that the practice of exploiting SW commercially began with Lucas almost 40 years ago. Disney's just taking it to another level which is no surprise since that's what they do with everything they own.

Fair enough . GL was happy to promote SW and make money doing so , and the merchants were happy to have their products connected to Star Wars ‘ popularity - helped their bottom line too !

Don’t see the harm . It’s a small ( commercialised ) world after all ! ;)
Except when merchandising detrimentally affects a movies overall story . By that I mean , plot devices being added / altered unnecessarily simply to gain further monetary ends .

Look, they are gonna pull out every trick in the book to *try* to conceal Alden's diminutive size. Both in promotional materials, and the film itself.

It ain't gonna work, though. He's just too damn small to play this character. Too short, and too delicate in build.

Dude, you've got to admit, though...after the "December Massacre" of just a few months ago (god, it seems like years...), this guy's height should be sooooo the least of anyone's concerns...right? "Perspective" (no pun intended) has now become completely redefined within the SW world, IMHO.

Couldn't agree more, Dem Bones. Disney has definitely "punctuated" the brand since it's acquisition.

Yep, yesterdays Ewok is todays Porg.

On a side note, Solo, your avatar is pure magic. It seems to go perfectly with everything!

I dunno, just when I think their SW movies can't get any worse, they put out a clunker that registers a new low on the SWIQ scale.
