New build - and it's a Rebel! (Two Tubes from Rogue One).

Previously I've built some custom Alien characters and also a Canon Bossk and a couplf of Jawas for the little 'uns but ever since we saw the first glimpse of this guy, I knew I wanted to build it. It just kinda goes along with my kind of ideal Star Wars costume..... an Alien, well weathered and mean looking.
rogue%20sdcc%20alien.png

He was first shown at San Diego Comic Con and he looked cool, they names him Edrio Two tubes. At the time we didn't realise that what they had done is actually put together two of the Two Tubes costumes into one.

Benthic Two Tubes is the main Tognath character in Rogue One, he is the one that wears the leather duster and the backpack. Edrio has the X-wing style chestbox.

Anyway, as Benthic seems to be the more prominant character in Rogue One, I decided I'd build this one of the two.

For a couple of months I looked at parts and worked out a few of the pieces and bought parts here and there.
One of my favourite parts of the puzzle was finding the clip that goes between the backpack straps. It turned out it was a parachute clip, and while I couldn't find the very exact piece in the UK I did find a part that was probably 90% accurate. After finding somebody in the UK that supplied these parts I was also lucky enough to get sent this for free!

From ebay I ekpt buying bits & pieces as I found them. A long leather coat, a scrim scarf, some cheap chelsea boots, some ski trousers, a backpack frame etc etc.
I also bought 10m of Parachute silk, and although I have no clue how to use it myself, my missus is pretty handy with a sewing machine.
She set about making the under tunic for me. She kept asking me what needed to go where, which direction to sew the lines etc and it turned out better than I expected!

While she was busy doing this, I did things like cut up the leather jacket, smashed it around the garden, and started sculpting the head from plasticine.

I decided to make the breather part first and go from there. Once this part was scuplted I made a mould and a resin copy.

Next up (in between lots of other bits) I started scuplted the top of the head.

Unfortunately, I didn't account for any shrinkage, and although I built the scuplt up on my head cast, the resin version was too small to fit on my head!

Oh well, learned from that, and started scuplting with more plasticine on top of the 'small head' to make a larger head.

This time it fitted!

I also sculpted and cast the details for the ears and the back of the head:

At this time I was pretty please, a few of the larger important items were getting there, the next big item was the rifle.
I used reference images and a bit of photoshop and worked out that this gun stood somewhere around 5'8" .... pretty big!
The gun started out as a 3' x 3' board of mangowood ply (it was free) and a 5'x1"aerial mast.

This slowly took shape with the use of my Mum and Step Dads Tool Shed (there's much bigger tools in their tool shed than mine!)

The backpack (another large piece) was made using the backpack frame from ebay, some carpet tubes and ends of the tubes scuplted and cast in resin. A World War 2 Gas Mask bag was also added like the film reference pics (a very brief glimpse of this can be seen in Rogue 1)

There were lots of other small details, gloves (with sound triggers), the belt (along with pouches, side straps, double buckle and 'flares'), shoulder armour, the tubes themselves - and fastenings for the tubes, the knee pads and the Monocular (still building) but the whole thing (about 90% complete) worn together can be seen here:

This costume will hopefully soon be completed.

Hi stew ,love this costume ,I'm just starting mine doin the Edrio one with the different blaster rifle ,will probably build the stuff to do benthic version later
cheers

Hi Astraman. Yeah, that's exactly my thoughts ... to produce the other rifle and X-wing style chestbox as an alternative costume. I know there are subtle other differences such as boots etc but the rifle and chest are the two major parts to add, once the jacket, backpack and front bag are removed.

Are you going to mcm Birmingham con in November ?? I'm going with my daughter she's going as Maria from assassins creed movie
would be good to meet you get some tips

I should be there, but with UKG so should be wearing my Bossk costume. I'm not sure if this would clear with RL in time.

Thanks for sharing, the build looks incredible! I always liked this character, Benthic has a really cool voice too.

Looks great! What trousers did you use exactly? I'm working on that character for a long time, I still sculpting helmet but I can't find right ski trousers.

I bought some black ski trousers off ebay, then using some similar black material and some quilt stuffing made the knee pad areas. These have been dirtied with some brown paints /dyes but they could do with being more brown really (something I intend to do).

I had a decent opportunity to wear the costume this weekend at a UK Comic Con (UltraCon) so now I have a few more photos of the costume.
It was pretty well received and it was nice to hear the positive comments from fellow costumers and the public.

It wasn't too bad at all, I'd say that wearing Bossk is probably worse for long stints. The mirrored lenses in the eyes fogged up occasionally and in photos they produced 'black hole eyes' so I'm now trying out using mesh eyes as a replacement, they won't fog up and look more silver in photographs. I'll test different types of mesh to go as fine as possible while keep visibility. I've done a few hours in costume today with some mesh that I took from a tea strainer and they work great, and I've ordered some finer mesh.

I shall get them bought As its Edrio I'm doing first
oh aye I've bought a leather jacket and back pack frame as they wEre cheap off eBay

Since clearing my TwoTubes and looking at some photos I've become a little unhappy with some of the features of the head.
The ears sit too low, the breather is slightly too wide and the colour is too dark/peach.

Since Santa was kind to me this year and brought me a 3D printer I thought I'd have a go at 3D printing a new head. "Build it and they will come" have produced some great 3D models recently and I now subscribe to their service.

First of all, obviously I had to start printing the parts:

Then, rough assemble.

and check the scale:

It was a tight squeeze, and I probably should have gone up an extra 5-10% to make things a little easier, but I thought I'd work with what I had, after all it took around 70 hours to print all the pieces.

I widened the the back of the dome slightly and reworked part of the breather (the 3D print was a little too smooth and was missing a few angles). I built these up and filled the seams with Car Body Filler.

Once I was happy with the join lines, I gave it all a couple of coats of pigmented resin to get a better idea of how it looked.

Then it was just a case of building up the paint layers.

I eventually cut off the oversized ear rods and replaced them with smaller ones. (Made from Chupa Chup sticks and sections of bendy straws).

Here it is, finished alongside the old head.

And with the rest of the costume:

And a video, it's windy but you can hear the voice effects:

Hi Stew, I am interesting in the Benthic custome but I don't find the .STL file to make the mask in 3D. Please you can send me the file or post the link?? thanks!!

The original file for the head was from “Build it and they will come” Facebook group. I remade the breather section though as I felt some angles were missing on the original file. The backpack was remade too with 4” waste tubes and 3D printed and caps.
