Chief Jim Hopper Costume and Props Thread

I'm starting this thread as a resource for any and all to create a very accurate Jim Hopper costume/cosplay. Jim Hopper wears, for most of the show, a Stetson Open Road fedora variant (created by Orlando Palacios - links below post) and a standard khaki officer uniform (with Hawkins Police and American Flag patches, a name tag, and a badge). Be warned: the hat is over $600. Similar hats can be found for cheaper on Stetson's website or eBay.

He also has a casual outfit which consists of jeans, a blue plaid button up, a gray henley underneath the button up, and his signature hat. Jim (from what I've seen) wears boots similar to Crevo Bucks.

He is seen in one of two jackets: a chocolate brown light jacket (that I haven't identified yet) and a B9 navy blue parka. The parka also has a Hawkins Police and American Flag patch. I found a B9 on sale on Etsy and from Velour Clothing. But both were sold out and not in production anymore. If anyone knows a place on Etsy, eBay, or the web in general where you can find a similar or the exact same coat, please share.

As for weapons and other props, Hopper carries a Smith & Wesson M66 .357 Revolver with a 4 inch barrel (You can find airsoft or gun model versions of this online). Hopper also has a small yellow and white pen or mechanical pencil he keeps in his left breast pocket. And though this is not seen in the show, he probably carries a wallet with more credentials and IDs in it.

A little more info to help out - just finished (mostly) putting together my Hopper costume.

Here's the company that actually made the holster for the production - Tex Shoemaker and sons - it's a border patrol style holster:

Here's a great resource for the name tag, and it's the accurate size:

Hopper carries a Bic Clic commercial style pen, which are still common enough, just hard to find in the appropriate yellow with chrome hardware setup. I contact several printers who do custom orders and apparently the only easy way to get the pen is to do a large print run because (they claim) Bic won't sell them in the consumer market as blanks. I found one on ebay and removed the printing on it:

Hopper's uniform shirt looks to be a Flying Cross brand uniform shirt in Silver Tan. I have both the command style and the delux tropical, and the tropical seems to be the correct one.

His uniform pants have been a bit harder. I found a standard law enforcement style pant - also in silver tan, but his on the show have two defining features that make them period - which also makes me think they were custom made for production - the pant legs have that classic 70's - 80's taper and flare to them which isn't common in uniform pants now, and the rear pockets on the pants have a pointed flap closure, which also isn't common, though it's similar to the USMC style alpha service pants, but I haven't' been able to find those in silver tan. But as I said, I think these were custom made for the production.

And to add to what Darth Xelaider said about the blue winter coat - it's definitely molded after a civilian B9 Korean War era bomber jacket, but I think production also had these made. Hopper's looks to be a bit lighter in bulk and seems to be made from a cotton or canvas material, where the classic blue B9 was 100% nylon - which makes it slightly shiny. Everything else about the B9 is spot on, even down to the details on the split hood. I have a vintage one (actually the one that was sold on Etsy) and it's as close as you can get without having it custom made. It's also warm as all get up, and heavy to boot. Which is why I'm sure production made these - both to keep it lighter for filming, non reflective and not noisy (nylon is noisy as can be and would interfere with any sound recording they do on set.)

EDIT: I think the actual jacket has been found by member Brochillington here: http://www.primouniform.com/34"-B-9-Split-Hood-Parka.1092.167.1.htm?UMParent=180

As to his uniform belt, in Season 1 it looks like he wears a standard black garrison leather belt. In season 2, it seems to have changed to a brown one.

He also carries some sort of belt clip knife on the center back of this trousers, haven't identified that one yet.

Also, I'm not clear on his watch on the left wrist, though he wears a blue elastic hair tie on his right wrist - it belonged to his daughter.

Hope this helps add to the "dissection" of his police uniform!

Thanks for the additions, guys! I have a few questions. . .

Allen, where did you purchase the airsoft 357? And what make and model is it replicating? Thanks again for the info on the pants you found. Your costume looks fantastic!

And sctcarts, do you have any sources/links/information on where to buy a B9? I have scoured Etsy, eBay, and other sites and come up short. Also, the attachment for the pen you mentioned doesn't work, fyi.

Thanks! It is the UHC model UA 931S - a Very close replica of S&W Model 66 .357 Magnum I purchased on Amazon. I tried to copy link but not successfully- I will try again. The s in 931 stands for silver. The proportions on name tag were off (my fault) I found Hawkins police patch on Etsy . The hat i purchased in Germany. Just a felt fedora - I am not paying $600 for the real thing! Thanks for likes!

I concur with Brochillington's post - I think he found the jacket! I'm ordering one Tuesday and will post pictures as soon as it's in.

That's definitely it! Cotton shell, dark blue parka hood, and the chrome zipper and diagonal pockets. I'm getting mine Thursday or asap before everyone else can! Thank you guys so much for finding that!!

Now we need to figure out the pants. It's those damn pointed pocket flaps on the back that keep hanging me up.....

I've emailed the manufacturer of these jackets (United Pioneer) and asked for some additional information/pictures. Hopefully I get a response tomorrow morning which I'll relay here.
