Star Wars movie set den build

I had to sign up to therpf just so I could tell you how insanely awesome your work is, thank you for sharing and keep it up!

Keep it up? Okay.

I kinda got stuck on one of the elements. I'm making this 2-ft wide by 10-ft long ceiling fixture. Over the winter I lost the motivation to paint it in my unheated garage. Now, the weather is warm and I'm back to work on it.

This shows where I left off, finishing the corners on one end. I want really nice corners, so there is some filling and sanding involved. I have some family coming over next week, so this week I want to get this thing hung from the ceiling, if only temporarily. Eventually this ceiling centerpiece will have some lighting, a fan, and some other features.

Back to work on the ceiling centerpiece, now painted. It took two people to get it hanging from the framework. None of the fasteners worked as expected, so we've got it hanging with some ropes temporarily.

The corners of it (on the rightside end) turned out just fine. Tonight I need to re-figure the mounting hardware, then start attaching some greeblies. That's the best part.

Last night, I made some ambient "ship" sounds with an audio editor program. It sounds like a ship interior with the low rumble and some slight mechanical sounds mixed in. The audio file is 30 minutes long. Under the floor, I have some subsonic transducers that vibrate the floor with the audio rumble. Even standing outside the room, it "feels" like something is in motion. It's so outrageous and, admittedly, silly!

Yesterday's post was a photo of the ceiling centerpiece temporarily attached. Today I have added a few of the decorations to the newly-installed ceiling centerpiece. Here is a video, looking up at it.
As I was designing it last year, I tried to think of interesting ways for light to shine through openings in it. There will be many more details added this weekend. And I may improve the lighting in it later, if the budget allows.

After viewing the project of RPF member Fuzzal and his game room, I got a few more ideas for this project. That's one of the great things about this forum. And today I downloaded the Tapatalk app for my Android phone. I haven't used it enough to know if I like it yet, but I did read a few RPF threads while at a local play during intermission.

I continue to look for items that I can recycle into decorations. That saves money on the build. Here is an old audio VU meter that I made into a targeting computer display.

It has a glass face and is lit from behind. More later!

If it makes you happy then it isn't silly.

This is from my 2nd day of ceiling centerpiece construction. I have added a few more details.

At the start of the video, you can briefly see some of the Millennium Falcon "lightspeed" window that sits in front of my desk.

Lately I am contemplating joining an SW costuming club. I found an active member in my city and messaged him last night. We'll see where that leads.

Meanwhile, the ceiling centerpiece construction continues, day 3 and another VIDEO. Since I have the perfect balance of a Jedi cat, I'll climb a ladder for this video. This time you can see the top of the thing with the temporary rope light. I'm trying to think up a better more luminous method of illumination. And tonight I'm making a better method of attaching the centerpiece (8 places) to the horizontal framework. I have some 1/4" carriage bolts that are a few inches long, nuts, and washers. I think she can hold together!

Let me know if you have any brighter lighting ideas. This time I want something cheap. I might just triple the white LED rope lights because those are inexpensive, and easy to lay in place.

Looks awesome.......especially love the porn music in the video in post 453!

I'm going to redo my man cave, I would love to incorporate some of what you've done.

I'd like to build a button panel like this. Does anyone have the dimensions all measured out? Like, does this appear in a blueprint book or other reference source?

I'd like to build an accurate copy, lights and all.

The last couple days I have been working on a threshold for the doorway to this room. For the past year, I had been looking around for some kind of wood that would be suitable. But I didn't think any pre-made wooden piece would look right, or fit right over the tile ends.

I didn't want a piece of oak. Did they have stained oak wood in Star Wars? Probably not. Making it more complicated, was the dimensions of this trim piece I needed. I was dealing with three heights to try and match up. The tall hallway carpet + pad, the thin room carpeting, and the (fragile) black tiles are taller than the room carpet. I wanted to make sure the tiles wouldn't crack when stepped on. So I decided to make something FREE out of the plastic-like Sintra material I had on hand. This is the bottom-side under construction.

Above, I chopped up some Sintra and glued on a cushion strip in the middle. This rubbery cushion will be in contact with the tiles to prevent them from being cracked.

Above, I've drilled some holes across it and begun to counter-sink the holes.

Above, I've test-fit some star-head screws. These are stainless.

Above, the threshold is done. Done! ...at least I thought so till my wife came home and saw it. She doesn't like the look of the screws. So, now what? I could put something over it, but keep in mind - almost nothing sticks to un-sanded Sintra, except plumbing (PVC) glue. And I don't want to make this strip any taller. What would you do? Leave it, or trim it somehow?
