Well, looks like I’m going out and buying some Oxyclean.
I've become a fan. You can actually handle the saber afterwards without getting schmootz all over your hands like aluminium black, and it's way less caustic than oven cleaner.

I'll have to try my luck at turning the V2 saber once I'm done with the hero.

You turned those yourself? Nice! Quite cool. I hope to one day learn how to machine my own saber. I looooove the brass necks, btw.

You gotta see how videos he made! Very helpful!

I may be getting a bit better and making the videos now too. still working on orginizing the clips I have from the past few days but may have another video tonight.

Once I'm done with the run I'll try to produce a summary video of 10-20 minutes with just highlights of the build process.

I learn a lot watching the long videos though, greatly appreciate you taking the time and explaining.

Time for a bump! I've started working on my new Starkiller V2 and wanted to share some progress. After going over the saber with a brillo pad and some #0000 steel wool, I sent the pieces through the dishwasher with some oxyclean for the detergent. This actually worked better than I thought, and I ended up knocking the patina back with some more steel wool. I'm pretty happy with the results so far. Now its playing the waiting game for Trent's newest stencils. Here the saber is pictured next to AS's 2nd run 3 piece. This had been my V2, but I've stripped the paint off in preparation for converting it to a Kenobi stunt. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180502/b9ef93874694deb54d2ee10cfd98bdba.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180502/d32498ded29b90768de318cca975a7c1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180502/d2fddcce1139930841af38bd50a72973.jpg

Wow, that looks incredible!! I gotta go get some OxyClean now too. Do you put in the dishwasher assembled? Or disassembled? & do you run it through the heat cycle? Or take it out before? Straight powder? Or premeasured packs?
I have yet to strip my AS v2 2nd run 3 piece. However, that will also be turned into the ANH Obi-Wan stunt.

Thanks for the kind words!

The first thing I did was take a green scouring pad and, in a circular motion, scratch up the surface of each piece until they had a lighter, hazier finish. I then used #0000 steel wool to bring the pieces back up to a shine, generally following the direction of the tooling marks; "going with the grain" as they say.

In my dishwasher, there are 2 compartments for powdered dish soap. I filled the smaller one (labeled "15". Is it in millileters? I'm not the best with volumes. The other compartment is labeled "25"). I originally washed the booster/clamp section by itself, then did the pommel, grenade, and emitter pieces in one batch. The booster by itself came out better than the pieces I did in a batch. The patina was much darker on the batch pieces and required more clean up with the steel wool. I would recommend doing each piece separately for this reason. I ran the dishwasher on the "speed" setting, which is about an hour long. It does use the heat cycle.

Here are pics in order. The first is the raw, machine finish piece. The second is after a pass with the scouring pad. The third is after the steel wool, and the fourth pic is after an hour in the dishwasher. In the final pic, you can see along the bottom where I had already begun knocking the tarnish back with the steel wool.

Hope this helps!

A little mystery chunk hack for y'all. After sanding down the machine marks and softening the edges of The Chunk, I used an M5 nut and lock washer on the inside of the pommel to keep it in place securely.

Thanks for the tips and instructions [emoji123]

Great render :)

You know, I don't. I just went to Ace hardware and it was literally the first nut I tried.

I don't know if all Ace Hardwares are like mine, but they have the best selection of specialty screws and other hardware. Way better than any Home Depot or Lowe's. I was able to pick up some of the old style mystery chunk square head bolts there just the other day.

I get racially profiled every time I go in mine... and it’s getting tiring... :(

Well that's just ridiculous. I'm on the other side of the US from you so I'm quite sure we haven't been to the same stores, but that still makes me angry!

Hey, I really love the result of your dishwasher lightsaber and tried this morning on one of my really white aluminum lightsabers. It kind of came out the same as when I put it in.
So, I guess my product is not good for that purpose. so, Oxyclean?
so, I'm in europe and I found "oxiclean" on amazon.fr, is it that?

thanks a lot, really want to achieve your result! :thumbsup

cool, thanks a lot.
well since this didn't work for me, I sprayed black the lightsaber and left the paint only in the recessed areas. it looks good and star warsy to my eyes, It's the Luminara saber from KR. but I want to experiment that dishwasher technique on other sabers! thanks :thumbsup
