1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Another great update! It's so amazing seeing how you're more or less able to mass produce the copy by now!

How do you avoid drop in the full scale cockpit? Can the same principle be applied to the smaller version?

From an engineering POW, a doubling of scale (all measures double), same materials) would produce parts that are 4 times as string, but 8 times heavy. The smaller size cockpit should have have every chance of being amply stiff if the relative size and material of the components are kept.

Well I've been working on making parts for the 1/4 and 1/6 Millennium Falcon parts. I scaled all the 1:1 parts down and had shapeways print out these parts. I will be sending you the parts Saturday. Hope you like them.

You can see the Volvo panel in black is printed in PLA. The Shapeways one looks way better and the detail pops.

Still working on more parts.....

This is a beautiful build, Sofa! LOVE the detail at 1/4 scale, but I need to ask..... What about the 1/1 scale build? Did I miss something? Is it done? Or are you taking a break? :)

PS: May I have a Falcon cockpit in 1/6!?!?!?! ;)

Thanks, FF!

The full scale nose was cut off at the bottom so it had a firm and secure base in which it rested so there was no flex or gravity pulling the entire nose down - if that makes sense.

I think you are correct... I assumed the 1/8" MDF would have been enough but WOW was I wrong. I'm going to replace the main nose pieces with 1/4" MDF. That should solve all the drooping issues.

Short of having some of the support made out of steel beams...besides that: great results there Sofa:thumbsup

Thanks, J! I'll figure out the nose issue. As I mentioned above, I think its a matter of replacing 2 main nose frame pieces. It should resolve the issue.

I cannot wait to get these parts in hand so we can check off another task! Brilliant work my friend!

Hey B,

Thanks so much! It's been a lot fo fun and not without the usual Falcon related set backs.

The full scale cockpit is currently is Dallas, TX where she is getting the exterior skin in place AND a new canopy. She's in VERY good hands with brothers Ken and Mitch Rogers of Real Movie Toys. I'll be heading TX in SEPT for a small local con. More info on that as we get closer!

FYI: Izzy and I are working very closely on the 1/6th scale version. I'm taking everything I've done for the 1/4 scale and reduced to 1/6th. We've been talking about a kit but we dont know how much interest there is.

WHAAAAAAAT!?!?!?! A 1/6 kit would be AWESOOOOOOOME!!!!

And the 1/1 Falcon sounds AMAZING! Can't wait to see it after the canopy is done!!! :thumbsup

I'll be honest.... Ive always been more of an Empire fan than anything, but even I would shell out for a 1/6 cockpit kit if y'all ended up offering them, and I dont even own anything 1/6 outside of some 12" legends figures. That would in itself make one hell of a display piece all lit up inside a glass and mirror case...

Hi Gang,

Time for the "End of the Weekend Update"! Called it quits a bit early as it was just too hot in the shop and the laser cutter was not performing. No sense in stressing out... just call it a day and relax!

This weekend was all about the 1/6th project Izzy and I are currently working. I got a LOT done but did manage to work on a few other things as well. The window saw some attention... not the best attention...

Applied a little too much pressure

I cut a whole bunch of tiny parts! A few of them needed to be redesigned and the interior shapes scaled down to avoid burning the edges
IMG_20180804_074905_zpslkpoacsg.jpg

Dang...
IMG_20180804_075146_zpsixnyu2ya.jpg

A little better... but still not there
IMG_20180804_080216_zpsrrswq6dh.jpg

Much better!

IMG_20180804_090003_zpsxzdhaolh.jpg

I then cut this backer piece
IMG_20180804_080631_zpsxgjkwb0n.jpg

Finally found the 1/8th inch plastic half round and adhered to the backer

To include the head rest
IMG_20180804_083150_zpsdhvo3gym.jpg

Have to cut out the hole to make room for the Tupperware lid
IMG_20180804_083158_zps2cweh58q.jpg

Yikes!
IMG_20180804_083649_zpsjhorcfm8.jpg

All fixed

IMG_20180804_085130_zpsq4xzfmt3.jpg

Done!
IMG_20180804_083212_zpsbqgzebsw.jpg

Let's get this head piece finished up
IMG_20180804_090110_zpsasxytx22.jpg

These tiny parts adhere to the sides of the two brackets that hug the actual chair frame
IMG_20180804_090129_zpso4nkruog.jpg

They allow the head piece to lean slightly forward
IMG_20180804_090340_zpsw6a96tw6.jpg

Perfect!

IMG_20180804_091915_zpska1yimfh.jpg

Just to give you all an idea of how small these parts are
IMG_20180804_091949_zpszmebwmid.jpg

Let's assemble all this tiny goodness!
IMG_20180804_092342_zpsb0guo0tr.jpg

IMG_20180804_094611_zpsftfncjwr.jpg

Armrests
IMG_20180804_110208_zpswj4aodi7.jpg

It was time to add the half round to the seat of the chair - cut a piece of tape
IMG_20180804_134256_zpswwvt7ui1.jpg

Cut to length and mark where the half round wraps around the chair
IMG_20180804_134329_zpsspjagtse.jpg

Cut a piece of half round
IMG_20180804_134402_zps3ummw8np.jpg

Using the heat gun I simply heated the half round and gently wrapped around the seat - not perfect at all!

Clip the edges clean

IMG_20180805_105939_zpstwxmtxta.jpg

That's just TOO think to be screen accurate BUT you need the space for wiring... Izzy has a LOT to work with so he might be able to reduce the thickness
IMG_20180805_105947_zpsxjxqnw9i.jpg

Instrument panel greeblies (Still a few more to go)
IMG_20180805_112415_zpstvihylhl.jpg

Two of these boxes sit side by side (I only adhered one as a guide)

And this is where we are... Getting ready to ship! :)
