1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

I think the red cover plates should be banged up (maybe some paint removed, showing metal flakes) or gray cover plates?

Hi Gang!

Update PART III! Enjoy

As a test, I created this odd shaped greeblie. It really should be modeled and 3D printed but I wanted to try something...
20170502_090855_zpsajjndvix.jpg

20170502_111039_zpslwhvkiqz.jpg

1/8" MDF laser cut with several slits
20170502_111736_zpsdws3i6av.jpg

When pressed against a gentle curve the slits help the MDF bend to shape
20170502_111813_zpsktr4isp5.jpg

20170502_111819_zpssbnttke8.jpg

The curve matches the nacelle perfectly!
20170502_111843_zpsn4hcjjq7.jpg

I then covered with super glue - this really adds strength to the piece
20170502_152148_zpseewtvzhf.jpg

Looks like something this... If this piece works out I'll fill, prime and sand and then see if we can mold it
20170502_111849_zpsmipoyctn.jpg

I then attempted to add a clear coat to the red nacelle cover plates... UGH
20170502_111222_zps6kj00swx.jpg

20170502_111225_zpswwc4hqyn.jpg

I tried sanding the crackle down... yeah... about that
20170502_111303_zpsjkdsngg2.jpg

YUCK! I tossed them
20170502_111307_zpssmtobrzk.jpg

I laser cut new versions
20170502_120927_zpsfqvt9evm.jpg

Primer
20170502_152154_zpscec7dano.jpg

I liked the red but I'm going to hold off on that decision
20170502_121012_zpstoolqk6k.jpg

I then focused on the armrests for a little bit
20170502_122446_zps6ulvbvju.jpg

Fixed the broken one. DEF need to add those threaded rods to add some rigidity
20170502_132337_zpsprchmozk.jpg

LOTS of filler, primer and sanding
20170502_140930_zpszytybrtz.jpg

20170502_140936_zpsedecshrk.jpg

20170502_141350_zpsjincuzoa.jpg

20170502_141355_zpsevqjhv32.jpg

Believe it or not, I still need to add a side trim plate. Not sure how thats going to work with the "T" nuts in the way
20170502_141359_zpsbueihmjg.jpg

20170502_152834_zpssi0mtv9v.jpg

Time to knock out these other 4 nacelles!
20170502_113645_zpsotfb00xx.jpg

Area cut for the armrests
20170502_113752_zpscajkzaht.jpg

As you can see I have to notch this one guy
20170502_113805_zpsa6sefyzh.jpg

Mark the area to be removed
20170502_113822_zpslrpc8gy4.jpg

Do this 4 more times
20170502_113959_zpsu7atba0d.jpg

20170502_122436_zpsolgvvrmz.jpg

20170502_132301_zpsepufnmrm.jpg

20170502_132307_zpszueynznb.jpg

I'm going to pull out the belt sander, even out the edges then find a BETTER way to apply the thin acrylic!
20170502_132332_zpsdcxsejhd.jpg

And finally...
20170502_101253_zpszopvg7gk.jpg

Time to get all this PVC cut and fit into position!
20170502_102424_zpsqosr7ec9.jpg

Dry fit - the 4" PVC tube is REALLY tight against the back support panel (which is why I had to add over 3/4" in depth to the hockey stick frame). I'm going to go with the 3" tube for the other two chairs
20170502_102429_zpsfsizhdp5.jpg

20170502_104800_zpsyv8shk6m.jpg

DEF looks the part
20170502_104809_zpsmcwhxnva.jpg

These beauty rings are going to be a tight fit when the PVC tube is painted so I have to find a work around - sliding them up and down the painted tube is not going to work and will DEF scratch up the paint
20170502_104814_zpsgmtqra2i.jpg

Sanded and primed
20170502_111059_zpsc4ktqcyy.jpg

Painted - that's a better angle for ya
20170502_120029_zpsudjayagp.jpg

And fit!
20170502_134939_zpsbprppk5a.jpg

20170502_134946_zpsdkvkv9is.jpg

20170502_134950_zpsukyjmra7.jpg

20170502_135000_zpsxp8qwfpf.jpg

If I go with the 3" tube, these top pieces will have to be mod'd - I am NOT cutting and sanding new ones! ;)
20170502_142553_zpswcxz6lwz.jpg

20170502_142602_zpsgbwymwap.jpg

20170502_152844_zpshrjxmbkr.jpg

20170502_152904_zps02mtrabh.jpg

The simple grey covers look good too!
20170502_152941_zps3jpnurv8.jpg

That might be because the armrests are still only primed?
20170502_152948_zpsl7jwdvmc.jpg

The covers would attach through the smaller holes (if I remember) straight down
20170502_152959_zpswbqiyesa.jpg

I still need to add this piece
20170502_153049_zps7rhhhd8a.jpg

And this is where we are!
20170502_152855_zps0wyw8fvm.jpg

WHEW... I need a few days off! ;)

More to follow!

This has seriously got to be one of the most amazing fan builds I have ever seen! Great job, well done.

Hi X,

Thank you so much! Its been a fantastic journey so far! I can't wait to be able to finally show the finished cockpit to everybody!

Man those chairs are beautiful! I like the red cover plates -I vote "Yes".

Thank you, my friend! A bumps along the way but they're finally coming together. I really like the red as well. The engraved writing needs to be white. That should help them pop even more. I have plenty of scrap MDF so I'm going to do several test and see which looks best.

Hey J,

I AGREE! They will DEF have that used look. I just need to figure out what looks best and whether to even include them?

This...... is so beautiful..

Hey DD,

Thank you very much! :)

amazing work. Not a big fan on the new bulky base, but I understand the original plan was too fragile

Hey OC,

Thanks! And yeah... I agree. I'm not a big fan of the bulky base but it just makes sense in the long run. The post is just too flimsy. Without doing an incredible amount of modding / welding they wont work. I might go back to them for Cockpit V2 but for now, the bulk remains. :)

Amazing work as always!!! Loving reading and looking at the latest updates! This build is beyond incredible and the attention to detail is simply out of this world! Its amazing seeing it all come together and wow, that Nav Chair!!! A work of art....truly!!!

Keep up the fantastic work!!!

Well Sofa, I think that those grey covers are way better than the red ones (but that's just me;))...as far as those tubes are concerned...don't mod them: more wear and tear is good!

Amazing how nice the chairs are turning out! My hat of to your amazing planning!

I like the red version of the covers, they give the chair a much needed splash of colour/point of interest. To really look the part they need (in my humble opinion) to be dinged up and dirted down quite heavily, a bit beyond your usual weathering (which is really starting to shine BTW). I'm thinking flaking paint with metal showing through and a fair amount of blackish dirt.

WOW! Great updates.. I've been a little busy on my end here :) It's great to see this progress! Those lights look friggen amazing. Well done.

Hi CJ,

WOW! Thanks so much! It's positive and encouraging comments like yours, and others, that make all this possible and help keep me going! :)

Hey J,

I like both cover plates. Not sure what direction I'm going to take but they will DEF be beat up and weathered. The PVC connector piece is too deep and the back plate wont fit properly causing stress in other areas. I'm going to breakout the sander and remove enough of the back side of those two parts so the panel fits snug as it should. I DEF want to add the typical weathering, but the pipe itself has to fit.

Love the comments and suggestions! Keep them coming! :)

Again, I like the red covers as well! It's a tough choice. They really pop against the basic black and silver of the chair. Speaking of weathering, I'm going to add another level instead of the just the different color washes. Those are the exact pieces I'm going to start with. More on that later!

This chair is for the Nav Computer. The mistakes I've made with this one I will avoid with the actual cockpit chairs. One of them being getting too excited and not thinking all the way through! ;)

Hey Wook,

Thanks so much! It's been a hectic couple of weeks (as always) but the chairs are finally coming to life! Seeing the cockpit plugged in and life brought back to her was a joy! I hope everybody gets a chance top see her up close!

Now get back to work! You and the team have important things to do! ;)

Hi sofa

definitely the red ones and don't hate me for this I like them with the cracked/wrinkled paint as they stand gives them that used look all I would potentially do to them is get a vice and clamp up around one of edges to dent it and slightly buckle it so looks like something has hit it/been dropped on it

And sorry I've not replied about this hinges I started a new job last week and as such has taken most my spare time.

Hey LB,

I'm still up in the air about the cover plates. Heck, why not use / have both colors? :)

No worries about the hinges. Whether fortunate or unfortunate, life always comes first! We can discuss when you have free time.

Since the red color is always associated with some kind of danger or things to watch-out for (air force/plane/choppers, etc ), I think that those covers should be either alu/yellow/grey.

In case you didn't know the round part of one of your lovely greeblie panels looks like the original was a finned brake drum from a car, motorbike or moped, A bit like this one:

Yellow would also offer a nice contrast colour. I still think it would look best a bit beat up. Joberg's point about red being a warning colour is a good one. Is it likely the Flcon had anything dangerous connected to it's seats, and if so, is it likely the red warning plate would have been fiddled a lit with? I really like the red colour, but since we're skiring the edge of canon here anyway, I think a dark yellow might do the trick.

Hi Gang,

Not a very productive weekend. Saturday started with me wandering around the shop for most of the day trying to focus and find some sort of direction. Sunday came around and I finally got to work!

Cut all the PVC for the ejection tubes

Great update SK -your slow weekends are the equivalent of my productive ones. :)

Caught Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 this weekend. Don't know if you've seen it yet, but there's a scene where Rocket is tied to a chair and, after watching your build, it's a very obvious ejection seat. I'm guessing more modern than the ones you're creating, but the lineage is very obvious.
