I saw it as Luke was sooo weakened by projecting himself that it kills him.
Ben
Earlier in the movie when Rey and Kylo are force joined (the standing one), Kylo says something like "are you doing this? You couldn't, it would kill you".

For those wondering how Snoke could be killed, remember pretty much every Sith apprentice kills his master. Snoke was saying "I know everything about Kylo, I am unstoppable, unkillable" which shows how over confident he was about Kylo. Kylo takes advantage of that and kills him. Perfect set up for his take over.

About the Rose (loved her!) and Finn trip. It ONLY seems unnecessary because it ends up failing. Usually in Star Wars these side trips HELP or SAVE things in the movie. In this one, the failure causes the characters to grow and especially Poe realizes not EVERY hair brained scheme will work.

I am really amazed at the new fan theories that are already popping up and they are already too deep...

“Young fool. Only now at the end to you understand.” LOL

Disney will NEVER make a deep thinking Star Wars Movie. It would never make a Billion Dollars. $$$$$

Yes, Luke is DEAD but can come back as a Ghost Jedi. This is NOT JJ’s LOST ISLAND where LUKE was dead the whole time. That would be too DEEP for kids.

Yes, he was a FORCE PROJECTION at the end, that is why Han’s dice disappeared out of Kylo’s hand when Luke died.

Just like TFA was a remake of the basic story in ANH this is a basic remake of ESB. Sorry fans if you cannot see that:

ESB

Empire chases rebellion looking for Skywalker and destroy rebellion.

Rebel’s battle Empire on Hoth in snow speeders and trenches against Imperial Walkers and get blasted to hell.

Yoda (Jedi Master) trains Luke (Last Padawan) on Dagobah with mystic dialogue about the true nature of the Force. X-Wing under water.

Hero’s visit BESPIN (cool planet with floating city) and meet LANDO and get betrayed by him to EMPIRE.

LUKE quits training early and leaves but FAILS at killing DARTH VADER but LEARNS who is father is!

HEROS escape at end in FALCON but Some Hope REMAINS about VADER still being good.

TLJ

FO chases RESISTANCE looking for Skywalker and destroy RESISTANCE.

Resistance battle FO on Crait in salt speeders and trenches against FO Walkers and get blasted to hell.

LUKE (Jedi Master) trains Rey (Last Padawan) on Achto with mystic dialogue about the true nature of the Force. X-Wing under water.

Hero’s visit Casino Planet and meet LANDO WANNABE and get betrayed by him to FO.

REY quits training early and leaves but FAILS at killing Darth KYLO but LEARNS who HER Parents WERE!

HEROS escape at end in FALCON but Some Hope REMAINS about KYLO still being good.

What else did I miss?

SPOILERS AHEAD ****************

Saw it last night, and still digesting it but overall I would saw I would enjoy it. I will see it again this weekend.

Things I enjoyed or appreciated:

  1. Chewie + the Falcon
  2. Space battles again
  3. Seeing Luke spark his green saber
  4. Different planets/locations
  5. Luke reuniting with R2 and the hologram moment
  6. Music was better than TFA in my opinion
  7. Seeing Yoda; (although I didn't like his look...seemed off. Wasn't sure if they were attempting to make him older than how he appeared in ROTJ, or if it was just a bad puppet, I've seen better ones created here on the RPF. I would tweak that for the blu-ray release. Nevertheless, seeing him was nice)
  8. Luke and Leia together, although briefly
  9. Seeing Snoke's redguard fight, something I always wanted to see since I saw Palpatine's royal guards in Jedi.
  10. I also enjoyed Snoke's throneroom
  11. I also enjoyed the fact hat this wasn't a blatant copy/paste of ESB, I truly didn't know what was going to happen

Nitpicks:
  1. Luke milking scene
  2. Leia Poppins scene
  3. Phasma's fight scene still felt a little meh to me, she was so popular I was expecting more than a sanitation trooper beating her
  4. Asian girl scenes, I could have had less with her
  5. the end of the movie...not sure about that boy.
  6. Still mulling Luke's deaths scene..would've changed that.
  7. Who was Snoke? We still know nothing, was he Sith? Dark Side user trained by Palpatine? Is he even human?
  8. And finally how the heck is the First Order so freaking powerful, I went into the Force Awakens thinking the First Order was a small band gathering strength and fighting on the fringes of the galaxy, almost roles reversed of the Rebels vs Empire (clearly I was wrong)...by TLJ they appear to almost wipe out the Resistance. Plus the addition of more classes of Star Destroyers and Snoke's massive Star Destroyer, where are they getting these resources? How did the New Republic allow them to get this powerful? The FO almost appears as powerful as the Empire at the height of their power, I just don't get the unlimited resources of the FO. It doesn't help that we still don't get any logistics of the state of the galaxy again in this movie. It just slightly diminishes the Rebels victory over the Empire in ROTJ. I just don't get that aspect. Building a ship like Snoke's SD would take years and years, and they're rolling out Starkiller base and now these kilometer long ships like they're lunchboxes. Like ISIS rolling out a fleet of nuclear aircraft carriers...that whole aspect bugs me.

And finally how the heck is the First Order so freaking powerful,

Well at the Battle of Jakku some top Empire people escape to someplace past the outer rim where the Emperor did have some plans going on if he died. One of the reasons they got so powerful was because it was a big deal for the survivors in the New Republic senate to not have a military because they did not want to repeat the Old Republic mistakes. As the First Order starts growing, a combination of spies in the Senate that helped keep the New Republic from taking action and also a lot of Senators that still thought they could avoid war again so soon kept them from taking care of the First Order. Kind of like the whole German WW2 push and other countries trying to stay neutral and thinking the last place they took over would appease them.

The funding and equipping of the FO has bugged me since the first time they appear in TFA, and really instead of a Death Star clone they sbould have been in possession of something akin to the Star Forge. That would explain how they are cranking out ships and weapons, because the forge had been lost in space creating them for millenia before the FO found it.

Things I would have changed or edited:
- Replace Admiral ***** with Akbar
- Remove mutiny subplot
- trash Casino and Rose. Replace with something much shower and tighter with just the Slicer
- remove Maz Kenda transmission. Silly and not necessary.
- remove Leia Poppins Force Float and or keep her inside the bridge during decompression.
- Campy silly humor removed from opening attack. These sequences needed more tension.

SPOILERS BELOW!

A solid 5/10 from me, some excellent scenes but overall structure was very poorly written and suffered from many inconsistencies when compared to the rest of the movies and other SW media.

Pros –
· Adam Driver is excellent as Kylo
· The CGI was often fantastic
· Fight choreography was good
· The kamikaze of the Raddus by Admiral Throwaway looked incredible
·

Cons -
· Inconsistent story pacing, the movie really dragged in parts and skimmed over others
· Wooden acting from some, especially Rey in many Ach’To scenes
· Forced love interest between Finn and Rose, GTFO
· Rose as a character is pretty damn pointless
· The entire Canto subplot is completely pointless apart from some really ham-fisted and in your face commentary on the RL Military-Industrial complex, Finn and Rose achieve nothing
· TLJ does not add to the mythology of the Jedi or force in any way that has not already been done by other SW media
· The Rebels begin the movie on the run and end it in exactly the same state
· There is inconsistent timing between the Raddus plot and the Ach’To plot, Rey is on Ach’To for multiple days yet the Rebels are only fleeing for approx.’ 18 hours
· The Resistance bombers as a concept are completely flawed and pointless, dropping bombs like a B29 in space? Previous movies have shown bombing by Y-Wings for example, whilst it's obvious they were going for WW2 imagery is was executed very poorly
· Light speed tracking is thought to be impossible but then is ‘figured out’ by Rose and Finn by thinking about it for 10 seconds
· The First Order ships keep getting bigger and bigger yet more and more useless
· General Hux is a laughing stock, not Military leadership material in the slightest
· Captain Phasma is a joke
· The humour is out of place and too regular, they use a ‘mum’ joke ffs
· Luke Skywalker and Chewie are criminally underused and Luke was written completely against character
· There is little to no information given on the galaxy at large, the state of the First Orders take over or what happened to the countless thousands of other planets in the New Republic after the Hosnian system was destroyed in TFA
· For all its flaws TFA set up an awful lot that Johnson could have run with and provided interesting and exciting plot points, instead he seems to have just said ‘**** that’ and thrown it all out, resulting in TLJ basically not moving the overall plot forward in the slightest
· Major set ups from TFA have been completely ignored (for example the Knights of Ren)
· The merchandising forced into this movie is painful, Porgs anyone?
· Running out of fuel has never been a ‘thing’ in SW before and smacks of cheap writing
· The First Order fleet chasing the Raddus was pointless, they could have jumped ahead and around the Raddus, summoned support, launched repeated fighter attacks, etc etc
· Leia Poppins. Enough said
· So Turbolaser bolts now drop in space?
· Luke could have been kept for Ep 9 and provided a dramatic character death there, instead of the rather anticlimactic death he gets in TLJ
· Dramatic plot points are undermined by forced humour (i.e. the killing of most of the Resistances pilots and craft on board the Raddus)
· Ackbar is killed with hardly a mention
· Finn drags an unconscious Rose a LONG way back to the base, right under the noses of the First Order troops
· The Raddus’ kamikaze looked awesome but completely and utterly ****s with the SW space combat ‘meta’

Overall a massively missed opportunity, some great scenes and individual moments, but it's crippled by a poor overarching plot that should have been dropped at the first draft, poor pacing and inconsistencies with previous movies.

Yeah, I understand that aspect and appreciate that, but just the sheer logistics of building a Starkiller base on a planet seem mind boggling for an organization trying to regroup. I just wookieepia'd Snokes mega destroyer and it's a mind boggling 60 kilometers! Make's Vader's SSD Executor seem like a peanut. I guess that's the aspect that bugs me, that the First Order despite being defeated at Jakku has the resources to build new FO Star Destroyers and a 60 kilometer SD? That's almost half the size of the first Death Star lol

Yup, something to explain their seemingly unlimited resources

Also what was the deal with Rose sacrificing herself to save Finn where she has moment talking about Love and people worth saving and then DIES!!!

But then there is a scene showing Finn dragging her body into the REBEL CAVE saying she’s alive!

And how the hell did Finn drag her over a mile back to cave right in Front of the FO without getting seen or shot? Are you kidding me?!?

This obviously was added with Reshoots because someone higher up could not stand the thought of a meaningful death in the movie as it may upset the women and children! Whatever!

Oh, and this REBEL SALT CAVE HIDEOUT just happens to be the same one with a BIG BLAST DOOR like the one we already saw on HOTH in ESB. Again nothing New added to story.

Does ANYONE at Lucasfilm have ANY original plot lines, characters, or themes that we have NOT already seen in the OT.

I guess for Episode 9 we should get ready for a remake/copy of the basic outline for ROTJ. Wow! Just what we want and expect.

Please Disney/Lucasfilm/JJ/Kennedy just take the ROTJ script, AND change the names to the current characters; rename the planets; bring back a even bigger DEATH STAR/STARKILLER BASE; bring back the Ewoks as a Callback to OT fans; have Ghost Luke talk to Rey for advice before she fights Kylo; add a big space battle and ground battle to take out Generator shield plot device; AND for no other reason but to advance the plot PLEASE bring in a new Super Duper Ultimate Sith Bad Guy for Rey to defeat just before Kylo is Redeemed to be a good guy and then have him die a hero’s death at the end. Show all remaining hero’s laughing around a campfire the end too! And maybe leave us hoping Rey will be the one to start a new Jedi Academy.

Yeah that’s the MOVIE I want to see in Episode 9!! Whoo Hoo!! Disney Star Wars Rocks!! LOL.

But if you really think about it, this is where
Disney/Lucasfilm/JJ/Kennedy have brought their “Original” new trilogy exactly to: a remake of ROTJ.

Really where else do they want to go except the safe remake route of the REBELS defeating the FIRST ORDER and the REDEMPTION of KYLO by REY. :rolleyes. :/

Been there: Done that! Sigh!

and then DIES!!!

Obviously she did not die she passed out. We don't see her get shot or chopped in half or anything so it is a tension filled moment to make you think "Did she die?". Guess it worked for you.

You may have missed where Kylo ordered everyone to fire on Luke I guess? He was moving her during that time period.

I have never been more disappointed in my life. Genuinely feel heart broken. Terrible subplots that go no where. Forced humor... Your mom joke really? A complete betrayal of Luke's characters. Snoke is just a nobody. No questions answered about him or how they got Lukes saber. No knights of ren. Disney is honestly acting like WB and DC. Doing whatever they can and not caring about the bigger picture. Sorry, i know Disney wants to build characters for a new generation but let's be honest no one cares about Rose or Finn or Poe. 95% of audiences came for the OG characters.

Was Luke milking blue milk? If so, that was awful. I never want to see blue milk in a star wars movie again. I saw the 3-d version and the colour was all dark and washed out. It looked terrible as a film. Rogue one was similar

The entire space action was tedious. From the moment those bombers slowly moved into position to the 18 hours of slowly moving away from the first order to the creeping down to the planet in those smaller ships....

It was like a slug running away from an encroaching twig.

Why did the First order pull back their Tie fighters? It seems to me like they could have just kept doing what the were doing and we would have been spared like, an hour of film.

The best part for me was the confrontation with snoke. But it was sandwiched between the final confrontation from Jedi and the final confrontation from Empire.

For the first time in a long time, I felt like walking out of the theatre and going home

This has nothing to do with the actor's age though. The fact is they are NOT the main characters in this trilogy. It is great to have them in the movies BUT in no way should they be equal to the NEW heroes.

The issue isn't with not accepting the new characters and just moving on past the OT...the issue is, the OT did such a great job establishing characters we cared about. The NT does not. I could give a rats ass about what happens to any of these new characters because they were so haphazardly thrown into everything and very poorly/lazily written.

That is a dose of real truth, whether you accept it or not.

I don't think ANY fan would have issue with the NT going a different direction if done RIGHT.

Not Dying = Convenient and wasted opportunity for emotional moment.

You may have missed where Kylo ordered everyone to fire on Luke I guess? He was moving her during that time period.

Seriously?!? That happened after he dragged her in or then how the hell did they survive all of that destruction walking towards the only entrance to the base?!? Sorry that was Just lazy and convenient writing.

Edit: Spelling and grammar.
