As an average sci-fi fantasty film, it was entertaining, but forgettable. As a Star Wars film, it was atrocious. This was not Star Wars.

A major part of Luke's heroism is searching for the good in people and trying to bring it out of them. As everyone else gave up on Vader, he didn't and he risked his life for it. This search for good in others is engrained in his identity.

The people who made this film had zero understanding of that. Luke would never have held a lightsaber over his nephew and insist that he's not redeemable, especially since it was obvious even to this random girl Rey who could sense that he was conflicted. But somehow in the years since ROTJ, Luke has turned into a homicidal maniac who considers killing his nephew while he sleeps.

While I found Luke to be the most unsettling part of the film, there was plenty more nonsense throughout the rest of it. The plot line of the First Order holding back from attacking the Resistance ships was such incredibly lazy writing. How convenient for Finn and new girl to go to the casino city, get arrested, break out, and sneak on a star destroyer all while the First Order is still slowly pursuing this Resistance ship. The entire time, all I could think was, why the heck aren't these guys attacking this ship that isn't going anywhere? They already sent out Kylo and some other TIE Fighters to hit the bridge. This made no sense. Did that whole plot line with Finn and new girl in the casino even serve a purpose considering they were caught and there was a ship that rammed into the star destroyer in the end? It was all pointless in the end. Nothing came from it. Same with Poe's mutiny plot line. Outright pointless, nothing came from it as he was stunned in the end and woke up.

The Throne Room scenes had lines that were taken almost verbatim from ROTJ, all the while I kept thinking, "Haven't we already seen this scene?" How is Snoke so powerful too since not even Palpatine, the ultimate Sith lord, could do what he was doing? Guess we'll never know as they never bothered telling that story. Palpatine was the head of a fascist political Empire, but what exactly is the First Order? They're not a government, so how in the world do they get any money or support for what they do? Again, no explanation, so it gets pretty hard to care beyond just an artificial label of 'bad guy'.

The over-the-top uses of the Force were absurd. In the OT, the Force was subtle and mysterious. In this film, it was a joke from Leia to whatever-the-heck Luke was doing at the end telepathically dying. I like Rey and Kylo communicating with each other through Snoke (yet again, how does Snoke even know how to do that considering the Sith are dead? Who is he?), but then the awful self-aware humor throughout the film had to ruin those moments too from the dumb shirt joke to "I don't feel like talking" or whatever similar thing he said.

Agreed. It’s the Star Wars Hype Effect. I believe the film will be Re-reviewed over time after the Hype wears off and it will be considered one of the worst in the series. Watch how many critics who reviewed it great the first time will do a 180 and say they hated the film.

I have had time to digest the film and the film fails because of the script/story entirely. There are some good moments but the VERY BAD, ie Frozen Space Leia; Grumpy Old Jedi; Finn and Poe doing nothing to advance the plot; FO cannot catch Resistance ships because they are too fast; and the entire story takes place over 18 Hours!!! WTF!!, outweigh the Good Ones, ie all the actors did a great job with what was written; and the Rey and Kylo scenes.

Maybe there is some redeeming scenes that were left on the cutting room floor which will lead to a director‘s cut but this is probably just wishful thinking.

I see in the Visual Dictionary that the Jedi Remote and Blast Shield Helmet were made for this film so there probably is a deleted scene of Luke in the Falcon thinking about Han and he finds these two props. Not sure this type of scene really helps the story anyway.

Star Wars Hype Effect. But look at the audience reviews on RT: it’s at 56%. Not good.

@caymen shen. I don't think they give a toss about what fans think.
@halliwax. Yeah I noted the absence of 'I got a a bad feeling about this'. They are gradually dumping everything that is inherently Star Wars.

I keep wondering, if the ultimate outcome for Luke, was to die, why not have him raise the X-wing actually go to Crait and face Kylo Ren. If it goes badly, the outcome is the same(?)
i get that he must be very powerful to project himself like that but it is lost on their new target audience of casual viewers and children and the general consensus seems to be an unfitting end to the our greatest Jedi hero.
I think the movies is far more good than bad but I've only watched it once so far and I'm hoping that next time the bad stuff won't seem so bad and I leave focused on all that was good.
Greenie, I was told they believe BB8 says it to leia at the very beginning. And leia says something along the lines “I agree with the Droid”

Exactly. So much of this dissapointment is fans not having their personal expectations met. If their pet detail isn't explored or elevated, they go off the rails. *Cough Phasma*

The entire marketing campaign for this film was LUKE, LUKE and more LUKE. If LUKE’s story would have been strong, compelling and emotional then TLJ could have been a great film despite other shortcomings. But when Rian/Lucasfilm/Disney cannot even get that part of the story right then the film fails to deliver the ONE thing ADVERTISED to their paying customers/fans.

The critic reviews were all good because Disney paid the reviewers off for those reviews. That is how this business works and why I never trust critic reviews. Just look at the RT viewer ratings to get a true score.

I have always said that star wars is very much like the wizard of Oz or LOTR, they are modern day fairy tales that will transcend the mediums they were created on. They will be remembered for being much more.

They also created world's that make us all dream of spending time there.

And with all of them, hearing about stories that expand the world sound like a great idea.

However, an idea for a sequel to the stories is something you should probably avoid. Dorothy never needs to go back to Oz, aragorn should never put the team back together for another adventure, and Luke Skywalker saved the Galaxy, while redeeming his father. They all lived happily ever after.

And while the idea of a prequel works very well in star wars (because the history of that adventure is so important) and possibly Oz, additional stories in those world's should probably involve other people in other times.

Because that's why we want more star wars, right? It's not about more Luke Skywalker as it is about more time for us to visit the Galaxy far, far away. And while George continued to give us more of those worlds with the prequels and the clone wars, this current version looks like the upside down world of George's. Stark and lonely

I think the main thing about Star Wars is being able to trust in the Story and to let yourself be taken away, to unexpected places sometimes - if you trust in the film/ writer/ director then all can be absorbed and accepted.

My trust in the story and the directors intentions was broken in the first few scenes, by Poe's extended prank call and Luke's Laurel and Hardy style sabre toss over his shoulder (also many other scenes where the tone was off to me).

So nothing else after this could be trusted, the spell, the illusion, the TRUST had been broken.

Shame.

I thought Luke's story WAS all those things. Sorry you didn't get what you were after.

Fitting that this movie features a salt planet.

I just dont think the movie is as some had called it a Turd. Also i think people are going a little bit crazy about the Rian Johnson bashing and threats. Not here but other places. In this movie it seemed more like a beginning in a way and we will see More Kylo Ren and Reys rivalry. Yes there are issues with characters and story but I think Last Jedi didnt kill Star Wars Luke Skywalker just messed up and died like Han as a character But Yoda showed us maybe Lukes part is far from over.

Can someone please share their thoughts on kylo killing snoke... I just can’t bring myself to believe snoke couldn’t see this coming..

Snoke having the power to bridge minds, fake force visions in Rey... and he can’t see or feel kylo using the force to turn the lightsaber and finish him off...

I’m so tired of hearing over confidence...

Anyone else have sun info to go by to help me get through this?

The negative reviewers are correct. It was shockingly, jaw droppingly bad. It gives Phantom Menace a run for the money with PM winning the worst Star Wars movie award because of Jar Jar and young Ani. But this one may win most disappointing because of all the wasted story lines.

You can't say that the outrage is just because people didn't get the plot points or character moments they wanted. Just look at the movie from a technical perspective. There is so much that goes on that doesn't even make sense on a fundamental level. I get that you'll get that in essentially any movie, but this one was so over the top and so often that it's hard to look past that. If you have to think "wait, why are they doing that?" And the response is "Oh, there isn't a reason" that's sloppy film making... not just poor choices for plots and characters.

Fundamentally this is a terrible job of writing and editing on an epic scale.

Well I just read an interview where Rian Johnson said at the premiere that because of the total top secrecy at Disney Lucasfilm in regards to TLJ then only 10 people saw the film in the editing stage and final cut. Because these 10 people laughed at his jokes and liked his story line then this is how his final vision and cut was met with overall approval at Disney Lucasfilm.

This is the problem with the “mystery box” approach to films. The Hype whether good or Bad may end up killing a film beforehand by causing a potential good film to be edited prior to release or completion by the original director, ie Justice League, Suicide Squad and maybe Solo (we will know next May) or a bad film like TLJ to be released without testing it first because the film relies on the “mystery box.” If the script relies on total secrecy because the filmmakers want every plot detail to be an “I am your Luke moment!” then be prepared for having your film be similar to the TPM and AOTC where the Star Wars Hype Effect takes place and the first reviews are awesome and clouded then after the dust settles the films are digested and re-reviewed and are then considered bad.

The reason ROTS is the best film in GL’s PT is because there was no “mystery” for the audience as we already knew the basic plot line, ie Anakin battles Obi Wan and turns to Darth Vader. This should also have been a golden opportunity for ROTS to become one of the best films in the series because most of us had waited so long to see Obi Wan fight Anakin after GL renamed Star Wars to Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope in 1980.

I just wish GL would have concentrated more on the acting, dialogue and story then what he called a “tool” ie the CGI and special effects. There will probably be only one James Cameron’s Avatar every 10-15 years where a film comes out pushing the technological envelope in filmmaking, ie 3D and Motion Capturing, that it turns out great but lacks an original story. GL was the one who said that Special Effects are only a tool and the story should always come first.

It would be interesting to see ROTS remade today by a modern film maker using better story telling and actual sets and practical effects. Oh well, but at least the GL version we got was the best of the PT and he went out on a higher note then his previous two PT attempts.

The Biggest mistake was ignoring the Legends Cannon and leaving Leia with one Son and Not giving Luke a Family to keep his character inspired. I dont have as many issues as i thought since seen it 2 times but Broken Luke weither he died by projection or saber it was facing Kylo Ren and Ben will again be responsible for killing more of his family. Seems just like Kylo Ren is gonna be a unstoppable monster without Snoke and he will have to confront his demons of guilt for Han and Luke. Even though i hated the Flashback storyline. I still had no big issues with Luke wanting to be left alone. Mark Hamill is in his sixtys so maybe a big battle just wasnt in the Cards.

I just commented as to the redundancy of the storyline on instagram and was told, "We don't want your opinions here, so please go back to your mine craft let's-plays." I'm laughing at the stupidity of the comment (I've never played mine craft, much less watched the videos), but crying that this is what discussion has come to. If you criticise it, or acknowledge a discrepancy, you're branded a "hater", or a whiney fan boy stuck in his basement in front of his computer. It's ridiculous how many people are just mindless sheep

My overall theory is that Rey is not alone she just has not spoken to whom i believe is guiding Rey Force wise. Its clear Yoda was helping Rey by concealing that she stole the books and just blew up the Tree so Luke wouldnt know. I think Obi Wan or Anakin is always with rey and maybe Snoke was having trouble Reading the both of them with Light Side force with Rey. Palpatine and Snoke had a simular ending plot only Vader died while Kylo Didnt Change and too Command. Snoke likely did not Read Kylo Has rule of Two Logic while Snoke does not.
