Blade Runner 2049 Baseline Test

Luckily, other retailers are available

I use Fusion360, which is free for hobbyists and pretty easy to get to grips with.

Here's a quick experiment: Both are from the same viewpoint, slightly left of center like the reference photo.
Left is with a 200mm focal length, the right is 35mm. (Like doing a dolly zoom)

Cool eh? I mean, it could overhang but its possible that it doesn't and still appear that way in a photo.

thanks for the link! i found a 120mm length one, looks like they are selling two in a bundle for 30 dollars, perfect!

I thought of the focal length playing a factor, but idk. If you noticed on your 35mm render, the lower triangle and the vertical bar are showing distortions which are not present in the movie screenshot. Also that screenshot is taken from the first baseline scene (link below) which starts off behind goslings head and slowly dollies forward. The shot is not a closeup but a wide, i dont think wide angle lenses cause that kind of distortion on objects farther away?im not camera expert though if we are being honest haha

So at the current scale we are working at the clear light cover in the bottom left corner has a diameter of roughly 12.5mm, does anybody know what part that could be? I was originally thinking something like this, but it is too large at 15.8mm

this is a little closer at 14.6mm

The light cover they used is clear and looks to me (granted its very hard to tell) like it has some sort of pattern in the glass/plastic, maybe fluting.

this series is actually the perfect diameter, but they dont seem to be in clear:

Im also not entirely sure where the edge of the llens is. The red circle is the 12.5mm diameter, but that could also be a small silver ring and the actual lens could be the green circle

This is an area where a 4k screenshot could actually prove really useful, has anyone made progress on that?

I found these 4k screenshots on this page:

http://lukedowding.com/blade-runner-2049-4k-screen-shots/

but im not sure what process he used to capture the image because the compression artifacts make it less clear than the regular hd version

Just subscribed to this thread - love the research that’s gone into this prop! Hope I’ll be able to contribute something useful, but if not, will patiently wait until it becomes a project run. :)

hey thanks for joining! Hopefully we arent too far from completion

Hi all!

First post on the forums :)

I was starting to draw this up in sketchup and went looking for some more pics, that led me here!

baseline.png

I'm looking to build this from wood get a nice finish on it with some filling and sanding. Will mount it on the white wall of my workshop so it's the first thing you will see when you come in through the door :)

mrcarkeys42, any chance I could get a copy of your sketchup model? I have not done anything further on mine. Been working on a 3D printed Deckard blaster and K's blaster but these are done so need another project :)

"updates soon" says me almost two months ago... sorry guys I've just been busy haha i was also sort of hoping for new images of the prop to pop up but they never did so its time to start making actual progress, I feel like if new info comes out later that's fine I can always make another version if I really feel like it lol

wow thats actually really good quality, thank you! where did you get these shots? if its from the 4k blu-ray, can you upload a shot of the entire thing in this quality?

yeah i just started working on it again, let me finish up this current version and i will send it your way lol

do you want a more complex version split up into multiple files? or a slightly simplified version for a single print?

okay, so unless anybody has objections (or new pictures somehow lol) this is the final version of the body.

there are still details that need to be worked out, this version is one continuous piece but i will probably print the horizontal and vertical panels separately with a small gap between to match the photos. The lens rings and vertical bar i still need to model, and i also need to find an indicator light cap that is the same size. I also need to allocate space in the back for any electronics. all of that should be done within the next few days (though maybe not the light cap, if anyone has a lead on that let me know) so I will keep updating lol

If anybody else wants this current file just to play around with let me know ill give you access to it

Ill be printing most of it this week, but i am still lost as to what to do for the led lens cap.

Id like to use something like this:

https://www.alliedelec.com/vcc-visual-communications-company-25p-626c/70152560/

mainly because they are common, cheap, and seem to look the part

only issue is that with the current scale they are a few mm too large in diameter, and would look something like this:

lens size.png

I dont think its another condenser lens, to me it almost looks flat, flush with the black rim surrounding it, maybe fluted on the interior. Of course i could be completely wrong its very hard to tell haha

Not quite right though.

It looks more like a vintage car sidelight or indicator lamp with a Bakelite surround.
Might be closer using a small light source, a lens and grommet

actually comparing this to the 4k image, thats probably not far off. If they had some kind of pdf or schematic sheet that would be useful
