I think the original prop bat was just done entirely with sharpies, so maybe a black border was drawn first and the red was drawn after, this would give that washed-out look because the red sharpie would sort of absorb some of the black and mix inks where the red touches the black. That's how it looks to me anyway :p

Personally, I used colour pencils as a base template and noticed when I went over the black colour pencil with the red sharpie, the pencil still came through, so I took advantage of that. Mine's obviously not perfect but I'm sure if you experimented with it you could get it to look how you want. This is how mine came out (note that this was drawn onto paint, I don't know how it will work on actual wood):

I have a pretty similar writing style to hers, I practiced doing a few letters more like hers though (for example "b" "f" and "l" but not "r" because I just can't get my hand to do cursive styled r's!) and I wrote it all on myself. Aside from that I don't know what to suggest. Good luck with your bat and I hope at least I helped inspire some ideas - even if it was what not to do! :lol
 
Bat progress! My dad did the diamonds yesterday they turned out pretty awesome.

I'm doing the writing on the bat right now. I'm done I just need to do the red writing mixed with the other writing. But I can't find a great picture of it! Does anyone have a good pic that they used? Or even a closer photo of the one that they made? Anything will help!

So the writing on my bat is done. I was really dreading this part. But while doing it I had fun!

So here I outlined the start of a line and the end of a line in pencil. ( you won't be able to see it really well I drew it lightly )

This thread has been incredible! I am doing Harley this year also but giving it my own twist, doing a male, Punk/skinhead version of her based on Suicide Squad, its not 100% finished yet but this is what i have so far, the shirt has been dyed by hand by myself cut and sewn and also applied the transfer myself too. I've got 20 hole boots with red/blue laces, the jacket is going to be replaced with one from Merchoid. (i will be shaving my beard) I 3d printed the gun myself also too

I've been trying to get an alternative to the Hot topics Harley Quinn Jacket, since its been sold out for a while now. I found the THINKGEEK Jacket to be a good alternative. We received the jacket last night. It looks great! The measurements chart was pretty accurate, my daughetr is 5'7" 130 lbs and the Large fit her perfectly

PRO: This is a real jacket and seems quite durable, unlike some of the halloween versions that are out there. the embroidery and sequens are beautiful.

CON: The red of the jacket doesn't match the shorts red I got. The red portion is less cherry than it is an orangy red, the elastic is definitely more on the orange side. The "Property" font isn't like in the movie, the rest of the font looks good but the original drop shadow is all one embroidery on this jacket.

(The Hot Topics jacket "Property" font looks better, the red looks better, but the fact that the HT jacket has the red and blue inverted on the backside is a drawback and doesn't have the sequens either. The HT jacket has been sold out for a while)
