This is one of the 40 TFA Lightsabers that Anakin Starkiller offered on the RPF just a little over a year ago.
When I saw the original prop in the behind the scenes video, my first reaction was "Wow, they made a new Lightsaber for Luke." My second reaction was "Wow, that emitter has a big dumb stump sticking out of it."
It looks they were trying to add a dash of Obi's ANH emitter along with the Graflex emitter pin, but it didn't work in my eyes.
I remember an interview with Episode I concept artist Doug Chaing talking about how he went home after seeing Star Wars and drawing/redesigning the X-Wing Fighters to make them look like what he thought they should look like. At the time, I thought that was kinda egotistical, but I've been doing the same thing over the years on many of my prop projects. I appreciate the RPF's desire for accuracy, but sometimes it'll be considered secondary for me.
There wasn't much to it. Easy-Off treatment on the parts to knock the shine down, drill out the stump, chopped up a 3/8" diameter bolt to get the unthreaded piece to make the insert and two 6/32 threaded holes with set screws to hold it in. The control box is bolted on with two countersunk 6/32 bolts.
It got a slight wash with rust colored paint mixed in with some brush cleaner solvent. It doesn't show up good in the pictures. Rustoelum flat black and dark copper spray paints were used.
I chose the "Hero" control box arrows because I thought the larger ones used on the prop was going to make it look like a Hasbro toy. Just my opinion. I have the larger arrows provided in Tomm's kit in case I ever change my mind.
Big thanks goes out to Anakin Starkiller, Tomm1999 and Sloathfurnace for offering the parts needed to make this project happen. This one was a warm-up for my next project, which is Anakin Starkiller's Luke V2 that I bought 2(?) years ago. It's the one with the spinning emitter. Pics coming soon.
