Ready Player One

I know I'm very late to the conversation, and for the life of me I can't figure out why this wasn't the first website I visited after watching the trailer for the first time... But I've been advised not to watch it anymore... The family Doc says I may be a little too excited for it... I remember the first time I read it, it was for my high school science fiction class, and the instructions were to read it as a class... when my instructor found out i had finished the book ~32 hours after receiving it, he understood, but said I wasn't to read anything else until the rest of the class got halfway through it...

Needless to say, I've swindled a friend to make a Reynold's run and express ordered a 3D printer because I need a Key. Stat.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I purchased a Power Wheelchair and a Raspberry Pi... Anyone know where the Johnny Five forums are?

While the book was enjoyable enough, it really is nothing more than nostalgia porn. Every other sentence was a reference to some game, film or pop culture thing from the author's early 80s childhood. As a kid of the 80s myself that was OK, but I can't imagine younger or older people enjoying that much.

I hear the author's followup Armada was even worse in that regard. I will not read it.

I got partway through Armada. It's very similar, but seems very forced. It just doesn't flow as well as RP1.

Unlike RP1, which I have read a couple of times, I read Armada only once (no desire to re-read it) - so my memory may be mistaken. But I didn't recall it being so "chock full of pop-culture" references as could sometime make RP1 wearying - but rather that the book was ONE huge pop culture reference: "hey, remember that movie "The Last Starfighter"? That was cool, wasn't it? Let me sell you a whole new book that is basically just that one thing, but I'll call it 'Armada' instead."

M

Edited to add - agreed totally with the "seems very forced. It just doesn't flow as well as RP1". I think RP1's success caught him by surprise - so he tried to replicate whatever he thought people liked about RP1 (namely '80s nostalgia).

Unless I misread earlier posts, I think there is a bit of confusion. Though I'm speculating a bit, I may be able to clear up the Ultraman misunderstanding.
In the book, Wade has a choice of robots to choose from (one of which IS the Iron Giant) and he chooses Leopardon, the strange Spiderman/Giant Robot character from the obscure Japanese series. I suspect that because it IS so obscure, and the fact that it's tied to Marvel's Spiderman, the reference would be lost on the masses (and very confusing) so the choice of going with a well known giant robot was more favorable (not to mention Spielberg loves the character of the Iron Giant).
Second, at a completely seperate event in the book he chooses the Ultraman character to turn into for the fight (using the Beta capsule which is only good for three minutes). Ultraman IS a powerful giant but not a robot, more of an alien super being.
I think most people are just getting super giants fighting and assume they are all robots. So my assumption is BOTH the Iron Giant and Ultraman will be used.

Unless I'm wrong. :lol

From what I heard, the actual theatrical trailer comes out tomorrow. I guess we'll see if that's true or not.

Awesome trailer :). And nice touch with the BTTF twinkle sound.

Seems like it largely deviates from the source material in terms of character interactions. So it will probably have new elements of surprise for fans of the book and keep things exciting. Book fans probably will be able to enjoy it more once they accept the adaptation on its own terms after the first viewing, until then it's going to be checklist of comparisons followed by disappointment.

I'm... not sure how I feel about this...

I have input but I need to sift it into a legible format... I'll be back in an hour or two...

I do not want to spoil anything so we're going to put The Hulk DVDs back on the shelf...

It looked like most of the trailer was from the last third of the book... unless as mentioned they really added stuff.. fun trailer though.

Actually, it looks like it's taken from all over the book, and they apparently moved Wade meeting Art3mis in RL much sooner than at the end like in the book (in the part where she says "Welcome to the Rebellion, Wade," he is wearing the same clothes as he was at the start of the trailer, and he has dirt on his face, which comes off as him meeting Art3mis in RL shortly after the destruction of the Stack), and he apparently continues to use his hideout for a much longer timeframe.

And Spielberg has stated that the film will deviate from the book. It wouldn't be the first film he directed based on a book but was drastically different (Jurassic Park had a lot of deviation from the novel). But, Ernest Cline did co-write the script, so it's probably got the same heart as the book.
