GotG2 Baby Groot - for my 7yr daughter - con pics!!!

Got a big surprise this weekend, when James Gunn shared the video that FX guru Alec Gillis originally posted of my daughter dancing AND a breakdown of the costume and construction.

As I've mentioned everywhere I can, building this costume wouldn't have been possible with out the amazing support this forum has provided me over the years. As fellow artists and cosplayers, I've learned SO much from you. Thanks you! :)

Saw this everywhere over the weekend! Congrats on going viral!

I found this thread via an Instagram pic, and I simply had to reach out and say hi.

Freakily, we seem to have been going through the same build around the same time (although mine is adult sized). I am across the world in Australia, and am amazed at the similarities of our projects. I did the big zipper the same way, snow globe eyes, model train flocking for moss and the list goes on. A cosmic connection perhaps?

Anyway, amazing work mate and I really look forward to seeing what you do next.

Kind regards,
Nate.

Here is my attempt at the character

Yeah, figuring out the scale of the head-to-body is really what sells the overall look.

100% agree on the scale Indie. Fighting the instinct to just pick up tools and go for it, I did a fair bit of planning to get the scale right for my size. The result in the photo is actually a compromise though, as I originally had the head sit higher, so part of my head was Groot's neck (I made a wood-like textured ski mask/gorget to cover my face etc). Although it looked great, I really wanted to be able to dance in the costume, and the balance of the head didn't feel secure enough with the way the weight was distributed. After some research into mascot costumes, I made it sit a bit lower which met my practical needs, but sadly the result hid the collar of the Ravager suit.

I love your suggestion of a picture with some tilt-shifting. I'll have to try this!:)

Since my post, I've been checking out your other work posted in the forums. Inspiring to say the least. Brilliant stuff!

Marvellous work!! You are very talented, the result is outstanding. I would very much like to be able to reproduce this costume adult sized for a convention in France . Did you by chance succeed in creating a pdf version of your model? or can you tell me where i can upload the templates for the head?
Thank you in advance and again great work. :thumbsup :)

I haven't yet had a chance to produce the templates as I've got Halloween events coming up this week and a pair of folding Falcon wings that are not finished yet for my 9yr son. lol

After Halloween craziness, I'll get to those templates, I promise! :)

Re: WIP: GotG2 Baby Groot - for my 7yr daughter

This weekend, I got a lot done...

I started work on the feet. I started with a duct tape model of her lower leg and some thrift-store shoes and added 5mm craft foam to make the feet.

Then I dipped some string in wood glue and added that to the feet for some details. Followed by plasti-dip.

I then painted this with a coat of beige fabric spray paint and then brushed over that with some darker browns...

Finally, hit this with a black-wash and painted the vines in for detail.

I just took the thrift store slip-on shoes and then cut foam pieces, bent them into a 180 degree tube (a heat gun helps with this) and then hot glued them to the shoes. I did this over and over until I'd gone all the way around the shoe. No sculpt... just cut out foam pieces that I shaped and glued together.
