X-Wing Lighting / Part 1

Ladies and gentlemen,

Bear witness to my first attempt at lighting a model using fiber optics, lol

So when I originally looked at this X-wing in half, I thought to myself, there is a TON of room inside for wires and the LED's. Man, I soon found out how tight it was really going to be and I had to maximize each space carefully.

So, with the 2 halves open and next to each other, I knew I had to wire and connect them clam shell style.

20160825_174639.jpg

Drill access for fiber optics to run into R2.....Then as I was was thinking...What if I replicate the scene with R2 repairing the engine ? So I held up the wing to see how it would look. Hmmm, still not sure. Suggestions welcome on that one.

20160826_153535.jpg 20160826_153558.jpg 20160826_153643.jpg

Put a prime coat on R2 and started working on securing the LED's inside the bird. I just used my pre-made flashers and slapped some tubing over top.

20160826_155040.jpg 20160826_211730.jpg 20160826_211731.jpg

I then hot glued them to the top half.

20160826_221419.jpg 20160826_221435.jpg

I then made a small styrene board to hold the solid LED's.

20160830_175956.jpg 20160830_180246.jpg 20160830_180552.jpg 20160830_180555.jpg

Used a smaller sized tube to fit inside to act as an adapter for a secure fit when I rub the fibers inside.

20160830_181905.jpg

Worked on supplying light to the dashboard screens. White on top and green for the lower targeting screen.

20160830_184020.jpg 20160830_190427.jpg 20160830_191131.jpg 20160830_191211.jpg

Finished putting in all the LED's and the 9V transformer for the flashers.

20160830_193419.jpg 20160830_194725.jpg

Slid the holding tubes off that were holding the fiber optics and litterally wanted to throw up.....Holy crap, what did I get myself into ?!?! :eek :confused :wacko :facepalm

20160830_195747_001.jpg

So I started tracing all the strands one by one and deciding what colors to use and whether or not to flash them and at what rate....

2nd Part Next....

Thanks for looking !

It looks awesome...but I'm so glad I'm not doing any of that....;)

In hindsight I would probably do a couple things different but I'm still happy with it.

I will post a YouTube video of the end result of the cockpit lights. It turned out pretty cool. The combination of solid lights and the different flash rates of the blinkers really worked well.

What kind of approach are you taking on the cockpit?

X-Wing Lighting / Part 2

Hello RPFers,

So here is the rest of the lighting. I created small adapters for the fibers to be inserted into each tube. Once I got the appropriate fibers located for the colors I wanted, I taped them together and then cut them to length.

20160905_190530.jpg 20160905_192143.jpg 20160905_192149.jpg 20160905_202403.jpg

As you can see, it was really tight with all the fibers so I had to be careful not to bend / break them. I used hot glue on the "cold" setting to fix the ends of the fiber strands to the styrene tubes. Wired everything up and tested it....

20160907_185615.jpg 20160907_185629.jpg

....time to put it together. I kept a number of the original screw holes open so I could screw it back together for a nice tight fit. the edges of each half were coated with epoxy for added strength.

20160907_191353.jpg 20160907_202624.jpg

No matter what I did, I could not for the life of me get the mid section to close. I took it apart 10 times and trimmed the inside pieces, but to no avail. I decided to just fill it and replace the side panels. Then on to filling and sanding.

20160907_202810.jpg 20160908_201201.jpg 20160909_202227.jpg 20160911_115545.jpg 20160911_120736.jpg 20160911_122438.jpg

Filled in the gaps in the top around the droid strip. Then all the screw holes underneath the X-Wing.

20160915_142712.jpg 20160916_184523.jpg 20160916_192801.jpg

The last adaptation to the exterior will be to remove all the toy molded greeblies on the surface and replace them with my own. Then we'll FINALLY be ready for some PAINT ! :D

More to come and thanks for looking !

Oh no wait it's still a big empty hole..LOL

I'm slowly working on this right now the engine and gun pod masters are done just been taking a break to finish Halloween costumes for my little ones! But I have been taking notes of all the cool ideas!

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Hey Guys, back with a little more...

from the never ending X-wing project !

Just about ready for primer. Added some greeblies and did some sanding. Taped up the cockpit and the butt plate

20160917_072551_001.jpg 20160918_155716.jpg 20160918_155724.jpg 20160918_155755.jpg

used the scrap piece of aluminum tubing to hold for painting. Using some surface bonding primer first and then black primer.

20160918_163012.jpg 20160918_163035.jpg 20160918_163408.jpg 20160918_163419.jpg

Coats went on fine except that the CHEAP PLASTIC shows ALL the scuffs that I thought I sanded out ! I freaked out...all this work leading up to this point......ugh. Again, sometimes it's harder incorporating what's left of the toy than if I had just built it from scratch. Anyway, I've come this far, got to keep going forward....

20160918_163432.jpg 20160918_163435.jpg 20160918_163448.jpg

I did a little sanding test after the first coat and the surface boogers seemed to sand off relatively easy now that the first coat is on. So, crisis adverted...The black coat went on a lot better and I'll sand the small blemishes off again before paint.

I also hit the wings with black. This way, since I'm attaching and wiring the wings last, the painting process will all be uniform.

20160918_171107.jpg 20160918_171411.jpg 20160919_090943.jpg

So, now that it's primed, it gives me the opportunity to switch my attention to the base. I did decide to do a somewhat death star-esque base....Some is based off off what I can pull of of screen grabs and some I'm just going to make up with greeblies and things that are accessible ! I realize the surface will be out of scale as compared to the X-Wing, but given it's relationship, I think it'll be ok. After all, it's only a base, not a diorama.

Again, thanks for looking !

Suggestions Welcome !

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Looking very sweet;)......I'm thinking because of the size, the base would be bigger in surface area:confused....... I thinking about this once I get mine finished and I think my base might have to be like 4' x 3' minimum...you did ask for suggestions:D

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Hey Yaris,

Thanks for the comments and yes, I agree with you, but...... my wife would kill me if I tried to put a 4 foot by 3 foot display somewhere in our house, LOL. I had to consider the size.

So, since the scale of the surface will be much smaller, a photo from above may look like the X-Wing is flying much higher. We'll see......

I've got the same problem, when I brought it into the house, my wife said..."wow that looks great, but where is it going to live"....I just didn't realize how big it would be with it's wings open:eek......and I thought I could eventually get a Tie Fighter and build a trench run scene/diorama....but the trench would be 8'ft long!!...they say size doesn't matter, but I think that's for people with smaller X Wings:lol

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Hello, back with a little more work on my base.

I've seemed to have lost my mojo lately and this project has been sitting for quite some time. So, maybe I can muster up the energy and inspiration to get this project finished !

Since my X-Wing is ready to paint, I wanted to turn my attention to the base, finish that, then paint everything all at once. I say this, because if I paint the X-Wing now, I know the base would never see it's completion....lol :$

So here's some work on the base and in particular, the cannon.

star-wars4-movie-screencaps.com-12533.jpg

Originally, I wanted to do 2 cannons, but as you can see by the work below....1 will be fine :wacko

star-wars4-movie-screencaps.com-13477.jpg

So I started construction. Not a lot to discuss here so I'll let the pictures do the talking.....

20160926_175212.jpg 20160926_182505.jpg 20160926_192624.jpg 20160926_195634.jpg

Cut my rectangular tubing in half, the chopped them up for the exterior ladder.

20161002_095847.jpg 20161002_100408.jpg

So after a disastrous solvent spill that threatened to instantly glue everything on my work space, I devised a "holder" of sorts. Yes, it's a tub drain....:)

That's it for now....Kind of at a stand still. Been slowly working on the other pieces of the base by adding greeblies and interest but that's about it.

Thanks for checking it out.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

That's insane! Look at all the detail, and it's just for the base! Good job!

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

That's freaking awesome. Now only you can add a small motor to make the turret turn and firing light fx. heh.

Re: Pcoz's Hasbro Hero Star Wars X-Wing Conversion

Love this build! Can't wait to get started on mine!

Thanks guys ! I appreciate the support.....been kind of dragging on this lately. Maybe you guys have pushed me over the edge to get fired up again. I'll see what I can get done this weekend.

Hmmmm, I thought about the lighting of it, but now that you mention the motor, that would be pretty cool....

What you don't see in these pic's is that I did run a rod from the top to the bottom inside so it would rotate. Adding a motor would be super easy.
