Looking good so far.

I have a technical question for you: Do you put a gloss coat on, after you put on the decals? The reason I ask is: I just finished decaling a kit and put a flat coat right on top and it looks horrible now. Cloudy and the carrier film is more visible than the colors on the decals.

You used Micro Sol on them? I usually do and have not found any problems applying the matte coat over them. I did the same with this one:

No cloudy look.

Yes, I used both Micro-sol and Micro-set and coated with Tamiya Flat Clear. Maybe it was one of those odd things?

Anyway, back to lurking.Thanks Oscar.

If it was Tamiya's flat clear in the spray can, then that's your problem. That stuff is a lacquer and reacts badly with decals.

Your build is coming along beautifully Oscar . Could you please share what you used for the panel wash ?
And because you didn’t mention it , I’m assuming that a clear coat wasn’t applied after the decals were added , and you only clear coated it after the wash was added too ?

In this case because the decals are not big I will add the selective wash and then cover up everything with the matte coat.

I used Vallejo acrylics diluted by myself. A note of caution....Vallejo products are great but they have a line of polyurethane clear coats that don't seem to play well with Bandai plastics. They dry fast and provide a good finish but it peels away easily when dried. The other clear coats with acrylic base seem to be much better and resistant.

Started weathering. Used some weathering powders, a medium gray color to start with the process. I concentrate on areas were dirt would usually concentrate. Looking at reference photos also helps a lot.

The color can be build up as you desire to get more depth and contrast or to accentuate a dirtier area. More to come.

Model is basically done. I always add a few details here and there when adding its base but won't dramatically change from what is seen in the following images:

I will start with the base next and later an official photoshoot to see if it looks like a real prop or not. Will see!

Thanks joberg.

A few more layers of weathering

Quick question....am I the only one who sometimes stop in the middle of weathering the model and plays with it humming the Star Wars theme and adding my own vocal sounds effects? :D

Nope ;):lol

I've really enjoyed watching this come together and you have me tempted to try a build up on plastic with no paint myself. Question for you - did you have any problems getting the decals to adhere directly to the plastic? What technique or special measures did you take? I've always believed that decals won't adhere to plastic, but I've challenged myself and wonder where I got this notion and if it isn't dogma.

Also, what do you do about hiding seams? I'm assuming you used some kind of liquid cement and got a good bond with no gap - i.e. no gap filling required, just sanding?

Great job, I'm really thinking about going your way when I get to my B wing. (Which is after my TIE Bomber and Y wings, but winter is coming!)

Cheers,

K.

Thanks! regarding the decals they glue just fine over the plastic. No special measures at all. The fitment of these Bandai models is so good you will not need any gap filling. Have you ever build one of these Bandai models? You will be surprised!
