They do look round or oval and they've collapsed somewhat flat from being stretched.

I've been looking at rubber bands and straps for hours. I've looked at vacuum cleaner belts, record player (turntable) belts, rubber tubing, bin liner bands. My eyes hurt.
I've read through the tread but I feel like I keep seeing different M1 style helmets.
maybe it's my eyes playing tricks on me but I want make sure I get the right one.

I think the one you show, is the WW2 Version. As far as I know, this is the vietnam version, which was also on the lower picture from behind the scenes:
