Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (FINISHED)

Ever since I could hold a controller I've been playing Mortal Kombat, so naturally I want to cosplay my favorite character Scorpion. I've cosplayed as him before but I really like his MKX costume.

I started with the undersuit.
first I made my own patterns for the pants by wrapping my leg in cling wrap and masking tape, then I drew a line where I wanted the seam and cut the pattern off. Next I traced it onto a piece of construction paper and drew it a bit bigger so the pants wouldn't be skin tight. I then mirrored the pattern and sewed the two pieces together, and sewed elastic around the waist.

I used my handy dandy duck tape mannequin and repeated the process for the torso, once I had it cut and sewed I realize that there was no way to get the shirt on so I installed a zipper in the back that will be hidden when the yellow tunic is on over it.

And here is the whole thing so far.

I'm going to add some details around the neck and chest, then I'll start on the next piece!

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

Finished up my custom patterns for the yellow tunic!
Using printer paper and my duck tape mannequin I drew up a nice pattern that will be fitted to my body, here is a look at it.

I will buy some yellow fabric soon and post pictures as the costume starts to take shape.

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

Made some progress on the tunic this weekend!
First I went to Hobby Lobby and found some canvas fabric that had a nice texture but the only problem as the color, it was white so I had to buy some yellow dye.
The canvas is the fabric on the bottom( the green is for another project)
unnamed (8).jpg
After the first round of dyeing the fabric was looking way to bright of a yellow. I went back to the store and bought some brown dye and added a few squirts to the yellow dye to give it a darker yellow look that I was happy with.
unnamed (9).jpgunnamed.jpg
then I cut out the patterns like so
unnamed (1).jpg
I then added some black lining to the outside of the tunic and moved on to the shoulder and neck pieces.
The templates looked like this
unnamed (7).jpg
I traced them on 2mm foam and then traced it on some fabric I had left over from the under suit I made, I sewed the fabric onto the foam to give the shoulders volume and then onto the tunic, here was the result.
unnamed (2).jpg
Now for the neck piece. I used the patterns and the same foam fabric technique from above. It was a very difficult piece to so and I was very happy with the way it turned out.unnamed (5).jpgunnamed (4).jpgunnamed (3).jpgunnamed (6).jpg
Then I sewed it onto the tunic.
unnamed (12).jpgunnamed (11).jpgunnamed (10).jpg
unnamed (13).jpgunnamed (8).jpg
and some of me wearing it with the under shirt I made and an extra belt that was laying around
unnamed (14).jpgunnamed (16).jpg
unnamed (15).jpg
I'm very happy with the way its looking so far.
I think I am going to wait till the end to add the belts because Scorpion has something like 30 belts on this costume. next i think i'll make the gauntlets and a hood for the tunic,

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

Alrighty, I'm back for a quick update!
First lets start with the hood, I drew up these patterns and sewed them together
unnamed (4.jpg
Then I cut out the lining for the detail on the hood, and sewed it on..
Here is what it looked like with my MK2 Scorpion mask.
unnamed (5.jpgunnamed (18).jpgunnamed (19).jpgunnamed (20).jpg
Next is the gauntlets,
I started by making a pattern by wrapping my hand in plastic wrap, then masking tape and cut it off to transfer it to paper for a pattern.
unnamed (3).jpgunnamed (21).jpg
Then I traced it onto foam, sewed black fabric around it and sewed them together to get this
unnamed (2).jpgunnamed (1).jpgunnamed.jpg
I just need to add some leather straps to it to finish the gauntlets
while I'm on the topic of leather I think I found a way to make the straps,
I found some brown pleather on sale at the fabric store and picked up 2 yards for $10 total.
unnamed (2).jpg
The color is a bit light so I used some test strips and darkened them with some black acrylic paint.
Here is before
unnamed (3).jpg
and after
unnamed (1).jpg
and the comparison
unnamed (4).jpgunnamed.jpg
The lighting isn't the best but I really like the way the darkened pleather looks.
I think I'll make the belt around the waist first, more updates soon!

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

Progress update!
I mocked up a base pattern for the mask and glued it together.

Then cut out the necessary shape in the middle and made a pattern for the layered pieces.

I cut the layered pieces and staggered them to look like so.

and glued them into place.

I then started on the grid part of the mask, I drew up this pattern and transferred it to foam.

Then cut it out along with a piece of slightly larger foam to ensure that it would be flush with the rest of the mask.

I then glued them together and attached it to the mask

I put some cuts into the lower chin of the mask and ran a heat gun over it to get the detail lines and painted the hole thing black to get an idea of what the final product will look like.

I think I'll experiment with making a mold and casting in plastic so the mask will be durable more durable then foam.

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

Planet Comicon is about 2 months away so its time to get to work on this costume.
First I fiberglassed the foam mast to give it some durability.
5c9a255a-35b1-4e56-8811-c9d5d60b5c12.jpg
I plasidiped it black and painted it with yellow acrylic, it look about 5 coats to get it good and yellow
5b1a98bf-55ab-4ee6-bbd2-4812dbaf7660.jpg
Then I weathered it with black paint
ddc455f2-25cb-477a-a708-d3313a5f7a4e.jpg
Next I added foam to cushion against my face and a strap to keep it on my head.

I'm currently working on the belts/ straps for the torso of the costume, more updates soon!

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

Finished up the tunic last night!
5c7a682a-e78c-41de-bdec-498dfb5dce35.jpg1bed9b37-c5fc-466d-8c10-4385b2a15f89.jpg965353e5-982c-4d50-810e-916029e08d4e.jpg
The belts are made of Pleather and hand sewn by me, it took about 7 hours to sew them all and glue them into place.
The silver parts on the buckles are made of a plastic lid from a storage tote cut, panited and weathered before being glued into place.
! am currently working on the bicep straps and the forearm straps, more soon!

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

Wow! Excellent work! Are you going to wear whitish contacts?

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

Finished up the bicep straps, here is a picture with everything from the waist up (minus the under hood to hide my hair and neck :D).

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

Finished up one boot today!
7f566cba-825e-408f-a311-0d8a062e5cfa.jpg
Its a regular costume boot with the top cut off and 3 straps glued into place. I'll be getting the rest of the buckles tonight and sewing them on to the other boot!

Re: Scorpion Mortal Kombat X Build (WIP)

dude not only is your progress phenomenal, I love the fit of each piece. all to often especially with MK masks the scale is way off and the mask sits wonky on the subjects face and jacks up the silhouette. keep up the awesome work
