Quints fishing rod in Jaws?

I guess the one guy who knows for certain is the captain of the Gladius X. Here is a pic of a NOS Fenwick 670 with the appropriate seat, butt and gimbal from Jaws. 20161016_190526.jpg

I just got an email from the Murphys, who owned the Rod,along with many other Jaws props, including Orca 2 boat,barrels,etc,etc..Heres the quote from them:
"The rod and reel was ours. We sold it at auction about nine years ago. When we got it from Universal it was pretty beaten up, so we had it repaired and used it for a number of years before we realized it might be more valuable as a movie artifact. I think that's why it looks different from its movie days."
So sounds like the one that Peter S. won at auction was the real deal. But the one at the Florida display I assume is a fake

Im finding this difficult to understand...they had the boat, the barrels, etc, but used the rod for a few years before realizing its worth...?

Oh sure.In fact they left all the barrels and the Orca 2 boat sit on their beachfront property for 35 years before they decided to sell the barrels and cut up the Orca 2 with a chainsaw in 2005..Nobody realized the worth of these props until a few years ago..Even the original Orca was sold back to Universal for a mere $16K not long after the movie was released and it was simply left to rot on the Universal backlot tour and was later cut up with a chainsaw as well.

Wonderful info! Many thanks. Wouldn't surprise me at all if this wasn't screen-used stuff, despite Universal's claims. The tackle was really beat up. Some more pix.

Guys I just joined the forum. Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but the rod pictured above on display at Universal is a Tycoon Tackle Bimini King. Definitely not the Jaws rod, which as you know by now is a Fenwick 670. The movie rod pre-dates the purchase of Fenwick by Woodstream, so you would be searching for a Fenwick 670 130lb class rod in either 6'10" or 7'1" length.
The reel displayed at Universal was the narrower Penn 14/0 Senator, not the 16/0 seen in the movie.

I saw Jaws when released in UK. I recall Brody asking Quint what bait would be used and they lifted the lid on an oil drum to reveal small porpoise. I have various VHS/DVDs none show the drum in the Orca?

the spear gun is based off a Martini Henry action so I guess you can cheat on that a little if you get out one and rebuild it

Now that would be a cool vehicle prop to build. I still want a DeLorean Time Machine and a few Batmobiles, but after I'm done, sure I'll build that. :D

Hi all. I've just joined up because I saw this thread elsewhere and might be able to help. I'm a keen angler and certainly looked carefully at the angling scenes in the film.

The Jaws rod is a Fenwick Woodstream 130lb class. It was brown (painted) fibreglass and had a brown foam foregrip with Mildrum roller guides and a Varmac reel seat size RS6H. The rod used in Jaws was one of the earlier models and had a wooden butt. I have, after much searching, just bought an almost identical model; the only difference is that mine has the later stainless steel butt with everything else exactly the same (wooden butts had a habit of snapping on a savage strike when trolling so Fenwick developed a stainless steel butt which was replaced with the aluminium Aftco butt when Fenwick redesigned the rod to use white fibreglass and Aftco roller guides).

I believe the rod used in the film was used in charter fishing for some years after the film was shot and was recently sold after being refurbished. The wooden butt had been sanded and polished to remove the original brown paint job and the guides replaced with a different model, which I have not yet identified. Although it looks quite different now from the way it did in the film, it is not the rod shown in the photo from the Universal studio photo above.

I say this because the rod recently sold as THE rod still had some the brown paint on the blank between the new whippings for the guides whereas the one in the photo from Universal has been stripped to the blank or was not painted in the first place.

Further, though I can't be sure, I am not convinced the Universal rod has the Varmac RS6H reel fitting, though the picture is unclear and there is quite a bit of corrosion present.

Hope this is of help.

Of course, I'm looking to find a 16/0 Senator now. I have the hook!
The original 670 had a butt that resembles the for grip it was brown rubbery looking it wasn’t wood or aluminum
