So pretty much everyone on here is very positive and inspiring and I think I am typically pretty handy so I figured I would try making a suit!

This suit will be the Iron Man Mark VI Foam suit. Files used are the ones that Stealth posted from Robo3687. Thanks to both of them especially. without the files or the tutorials from them I would be sitting here thinking, wow thats cool. wish I knew how to do that!

I did break the rule about making the helmet first.. yes yes yes I know. Chances are I may just buy a molded one anyway after the rest of the suit is done. I have gotten the helmet, chest, and most of the abs done at this point. Enough jibber jabber from me.. heres the pics!

Chest piece looks great. You might want to invest in a heat gun to bend the pieces~

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

You are a brave man for doing that on the felt of that pool table lol. Nice looking suit so far.

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

How does the heat gun work for bending the pieces?

Lol i actually have a 2 foot square piece of plywood on the pool table to do it on. But yea its a bold move!! Thanks!!

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

You have some very. I've pieces there. But you are probably going to want to redo the helmet. That's not a jab. We have all had to make a second attempt. (or third or fourth....)
Took at the face plate. It's totally flat. If you use a heat gun to heat up the foam, you can bend it and as it cools, it will keep its shape. This will also be helpful for many other pieces. The helmet just shows off the errors the worst.
Here is my latest attempt at a helmet. Notice how the foam is curved nicely.

Also, that 1/2" foam floor mat is no good for a helmet. Got to micheals craft store and get the 6mm (about 1/4") craft foam. It is much easier to work with and looks much better for helmet. You can also find this foam on "wandys foam" store on eBay.

Good lunch man!! Keep up the good work!!

But seriously, of you get hot glue on the pool table, you are gonna be pissed! It will never come off!! >_<

Not sure what you were saying in the first line there..?

I see what you mean, I think I may have a heat gun somewhere.. gonna go on a hunt here in a few minutes!

Actually I am using 1/4" 6MM foam for everything. not 1/2". See pic below. This is the exact same foam that Stealth advised to use in his tutorial. Got it from Sears :)

good point. I think I may pull the ping pong topper out and do it on there instead. I can use the bottom side of the topper as a place to work lol

Thanks for the tips. I am noticing that the hardest part of this is figuring out what edges to cut and what needs to be bent which way and how much. This is defintely an art as everyone does it a little differently!

I've been following your build thread Helagak and you can definetely see a marked improvement in your progress as you go along. keep up the good work! I'm also trying to get done by Halloween!

To save your table consider a 4x8x1/4 sheet of sanded plywood. And if it's to unwieldly you can have Home Depot/Lowe's cut it in half then you can attach a piano hinge.

the pool table was only a $200 pool table either way. I'm sure it will be just fine.... :p

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

Heatgun worked great on the ab pieces. I gotta take a pic of them soon. I made progress on the back piece.. See below. Its still a work in progress :)

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

Back piece look great!

Thanks!! I tried to make it as accurate to the pep file as I could! Im not quite sure where the front and back are supposed to join together though and not sure it the "brace" has any exposed pieces that would be needed to join them properly..

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

Here are a few more pics. first is the completed back section of the abs and also the collar pieces I just finished..

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

its going to be a loooong day today. I got the whole day to focus on the suit. probably do the cod piece and the arms today if I can..

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

More pics. Finished the neck and codpiece is almost done. Neck came out too tall on one side. I think I saw that somebody else did that as well. i think the template might be messed up a little bit.

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

Doll joints works great when putting together the bicep/forearm, and the thigh/shin.

Re: Iron Man Mark VI Foam Suit - My first build thread!

Okay so I finished the codpiece the other day and it doesn't quite fit me. Originally I noticed it was probably about 2 to 3 inches too small around the waist. I guess my behind his grown a little bigger than I expected. So what I have done is I've created extension pieces for the back of it. you should be able to see them in the pic. It does fit me now but it's still really tight. I may take the extension pieces back out make them just a little bit bigger and then put it back together because I really do not want to have to rebuild the entire codpiece. :(
